Evaluation: A two-way player on offense and defense with adept play speed. On offense, he is a receiver who can stretch the field vertically and make contested catches in man coverage. Nelson has a sharp eye for soft spots in zone coverage while running crisp routes. He catches the ball with soft hands and consistently gains yardage after the catch. His physicality as a blocker is second to none, though he needs to clean up his footwork by widening his base while keeping his hands inside. On defense, he is a versatile chess piece who can play both 43 and 34 linebacker. Although his primary position is the on-ball backer spot, he has the elite football IQ to diagnose plays pre-snap. Nelson sets the edge with long extension in the run game while using his hands violently to disengage blocks. As a pass rusher, his bread and butter is speed-to-power, though he needs a pass rush plan with a variety of inside and outside counter moves. Despite showing some flashes as a receiver and tight end, Nelson would be a valuable contributor as a 34 Outside Linebacker at the College Level.
