The Byron Bears undoubtedly have one of the best 2027 classes in Minnesota. Despite the loss of some tremendous seniors from last fall’s roster, the 507-representing Bears have returning heavyweights in both the trenches and skill positions, and leading the pack in terms of recruitability is DB/WR

. A rising three-year starter on one of Southern Minnesota’s most talented programs the past few recruiting cycles, Nicklay is one of Minnesota’s most under-the-radar 2027s, regardless of position or recruiting status. As evidence to that claim, Nicklay has posted an eye-popping combination of track & field times this spring, namely PRs of a 10.82 100M, 22.71 200M, 23’1.75″ long jump, and 40’4.75″ triple jump, putting some important context into what is nothing short of a dynamic, memorable, and uniquely clutch 2025 junior highlight tape.
Nicklay was the winner of Minnesota’s play of the year winner from PRZMN’s 2025 Regular Season Awards and Superlatives, where his “Walk-off game winner against a heavyweight Stewartville squad making serious noise in their first year up from Class AAA. Was it the best finish in Minnesota since the New London-Spicer’s walk-off Hail Mary to win the 2022 Class AAA state championship? Either way, it’s a heckuva individual effort given the moment, and it also does a good job of encapsulating the 2027 standout’s overall game and skillset. Nicklay possesses burst, contact balance, and electric COD ability and twitch, and his strong hands can win contested catches, as well as his ability to climb the ladder the high-point the football. Nicklay is a ballhawk from the defensive secondary with instincts, range, and ball skills, and he can lock down your WR1 as a man-coverage CB or make plays from sideline-to-sideline as a MOF defender. The 185 lber. attacks blockers with proper leverage, can set the edge, and can lay the boom in run support, and he’s an impressive 1v1 tackler in space as well. The Byron product scored in all three phases during the 2025 season and is overall a dynamo with the ball in his hands and is a game-changer no matter where he lines up. Offers from Wayne State (MI), Minnesota-Duluth, and Sioux Falls have already rolled in, but he’s positioned himself for a potentially lucrative summer on the camp trail. But first, keep an eye on this kid in the upcoming outdoor track and field state championships!

has continued to prove himself through his junior season as a dynamic and very dangerous DB for the Bears’ defense. Nicklay only had 1 INT after a ball-hawking campaign in his sophomore season, taking that pick back to the house, giving the clear indication that offenses were simply too scared to throw it his way last season. Nicklay is a lightning-fast athlete, indicated by his impressive 10.82 second 100 yard dash time he posted this last month as well as his personal-best 4.52 40 yard dash time. Nicklay improved this last season on his run-stopping abilities, improving on his side-to-side movement, and using that quick acceleration and close-down speed to minimize the run-game. Nicklay continues to grow as a well-rounded Safety who should continue to terrorize defenses as he enters his senior season.

One of the most promising young DBs in the state, Nicklay has been on a tear this summer, lighting up the camp circuit with impressive testing and head-turning performances during competition. When you watch his tape, you realize he does a little bit of everything for the Bears. As a sophomore, he was a ball magnet, and you could see his speed and quickness on both sides of the ball. He excels at jumping short routes and makes sure QBs can’t soft-arm a ball into windows. Nicklay has the speed to beat most DBs over the top, and the ball skills to bring down contested passes. He looks like one of the most promising athletes in his class and should be a key player for Byron this season.

Checked in just under 5’11” 172 lbs with almost a 6’2″ wingspan. Beau dominated both jump tests going 35.5″ and 34.5″ in the vertical and 9’3.5″ and 9’5.25″ in the broad jump. Nicklay also showed off the agility, balance, change of direction and burst in the L- Drill where he posted strong times of 7.01 and 6.96. Solidifying his change of direction and powerful acceleration, Beau also put up strong 5-10-5 times going 4.32 and 4.37. The cherry on top of his day was a 4.74 and 4.71 40 time. Both of which were near the top for fastest of the day. The sophomore WR is definitely going to be a name to know over the coming years.
