Listed below are a few players who have stood out in the secondary for schools located in the Houston area as well as Harris County. These players will be going into the offseason with a purpose and a goal to be even better what they were last year. Now this is only a few of a very big pool of talent and there will be much more names talked about in the coming future.
Jaivion Green, Safety – Lamar High School
A lengthy, long range safety, Green plays centerfield perfectly for the Lamar defense. Green reads opposing quarterbacks eyes and is very quick to diagnose plays. He shows a great skill of reading and reacting, and has such a great burst of explosion coming downhill on play. Green’s fluid hips makes it easy for him to cover any receiver as well as move throughout the secondary. Green expectations are to have a good, productive offseason and to be even better for next season. His size alone has drawn much attention, but his play will be what brings in the offers.
Ty Berry, Cornerback – Klien Collins
Berry is a very active corner who has made a name for himself by being an excellent 50:50 ball defender. Berry is a resilient corner who does not give up on plays. Some moments it may seem that he is beat, but Berry always finds a way to recover and make a play on the ball. He plays through a receivers hands and seems to always get a hand in to break up passes. He shows good physicality when matched against bigger receivers and never shies away. Berry has very good awareness and shows great explosion breaking on opposing routes. He also happens to be a great help in the run game and a secure tackler. Berry will be a name to watch out for. In the games he played he preformed well and only got better the more he played. His skills will only continue to grow this offseason as well as throughout next season.
Kobe Jones, Safety – Lamar High
Jones is a physical safety with very good size. Jones is excellent in run support and runs sideline to sideline. In the passing game, he can matchup with just about anybody and make plays when needed. Plays more as a box safety but shows his versatility by moving so comfortably in the secondary. Jones’s potential is very high, and he and Green will be a duo to definitely lookout for next season.
Jaiden Robertson, Cornerback/ ATH – Dekaney
Robertson is a threat at all three phases of the game. He is a playmaker on offense as a receiver, an excellent cover corner on defense, and an electric return man on special teams. As a corner, Robertson runs routes better than the opposing receiver, which always puts him in great position to make a play on the ball. He sticks to receivers hips and makes it difficult to create separation. Robertson’s awareness and ball skills are extraordinary. His ability to get his head turned around and react to the ball in the air is a thing of beauty. Offensively, Robertson is a blur when he touches the ball. He shows his athleticism, speed, and quickness when he has the opportunity and he does not disappoint. Offers should soon start pouring in for this game changer.
Jermari Seals, Safety – Cypress Springs
Seals is another physical safety who has a knack for knocking the ball loose. He is not afraid to stick his nose in the run game and take on anybody in the running lane. Seals does not shy away from contact. Seals comes downhill with a purpose and secures the tackles. Seals shows very good recovery speed in coverage and does an excellent job of locating the ball and getting a hand in to cause pass breakups. Even when the team struggled, Seals always gave his all and shed some light. Seals is a player who seems to play with a chip on his shoulder and who has much more to prove. Future is bright for this defensive star.
Sy Johnson, Safety/Nickel – Heights
Johnson is a dynamic player in the secondary. He can cover the slot or be your back end safety. Johnson is excellent in the run game. He reacts to runs with such force and quickness and is a very secure tackler. He is always moving at 100 miles per hour and covers much ground with his speed. In the passing game, Johnson plays the ball very well. Makes excellent jumps on routes and has great ball skills when the ball is in the air. Johnson plays the game freely, and goes without worrying about a mistake. You have to love a player who just plays the game without fear and with such speed and quickness. Johnson’s name will be talked about a lot going into next season and he is a player to keep an eye on.
Terrance Cullivan, Safety – Bridgeland
Cullivan only appeared in 5 games this season but left his mark on opponents. Cullivan is an active safety who needs to be located by the offense before the snap. He moves a decent amount and comes from anywhere on blitzes. He has great timing on blitzes and shows great speed off of the edge. 9 tines out of 10, he’s getting a sack or tackle for loss when he blitzes. Cullivan is another outstanding player in the run game. He can fill a gap, meet the ball carrier in the hole, and make the play. He is also a very tough player to try and outrun. Cullivan is an excellent contain man and does not allow much outside of him. In coverage, Cullivan shows great awareness. Reads quarterbacks eyes and finds his spots with ease. Shows great anticipation on throws and allows very little yards after catch. A very talented safety who can make plays wherever a coach places him. Will have an even bigger role on the defense next season and already seemed to be ready for the challenge.
