Continue ReadingThis past weekend in Wilmington, Delaware NextGen held its Philadelphia/Delaware camp at the beautiful Chase Field House. Aside from being the practice facility for the Philadelphia 76ers, it also played host to some talented prospects this past Sunday. While these athletes may not have earned an invite to The Show, they did some goods things and caught my attention.
Keyah Sunnyway
Keyah Sunnyway
Saw Sunnyway play at AYF Nationals in Florida this past December, and again this past weekend at the camp. At both events I took his picture because as a prospect he did some things that stood out to me. The keyword being some. There’s potential here for Sunnyway who can play Wide Receiver and Defensive Back. Made a few impressive catches at camp but not enough to really stand out. I’m interested to see what a high school weight room and training regimen will do for him next year in high school.
Like Sunnyway above him, I saw Brown this past December and liked some things from him as a Quarterback. In fact Sunnyway, Brown and 2027 PRZ Next National Watchlist Wide Receiver Sebastian Lora Sebastian Lora 5’10” | 150 lbs | WR Moore Catholic | 2027 NY were all teammates on the Fairlawn Cardinals team that made it to the AYF National Championship week. While Lora is in a class of his own in regards to Rhode Island talent in this 2027 class, the other two are very talented players too. Brown is another kid that should benefit greatly from the weight room. In a camp where no middle school Quarterback’s were selected to The Show, the righty again proved there is something to his game and the potential is there. Hopefully he taps into that over the next four years.
Omar Gonzalez
Omar Gonzalez
2027 prospect Omar Gonzalez did some nice things early in camp as a Running Back. On one specific rep, in a drill designed to have the Running Back try to juke a Linebacker in short quarters, Gonzalez shook eventual MVP and 2027 PRZ Next National Watchlist athlete Mekhi Corbin. That said, he didn’t have the elite speed, twitch or quickness needed to earn a selection to The Show. His frame is promising and he has some decent mass on him at this point. I made it a point to ask the Pennsylvania native if he played Linebacker on defense, which he replied that he in fact does. Linebacker may be the route for Gonzalez going forward, because he does have some parts of the puzzle there.
Richard Anderson
Richard Anderson
Another Running Back that showed flashes of ability but ultimately wasn’t selected to The Show was Richard Anderson of Delaware. Like I mentioned in my write up on his younger brother ( Elijah Anderson Elijah Anderson 5’10” | 150 lbs | DB Saint Raphael Academy | 2027 New E , 2028) I was immediately drawn to his build when the pair walked through the door. However, also like I mentioned in his brother’s write up, I’m not sold on Richard playing the correct position. He was one of the taller, longer Running Backs at the camp and ran a bit too up-and-down for my liking. With that running style he opens himself up to a lot of big hits, giving the defender a big target to aim for. I don’t waiver from the fact that I think Anderson has a lot of ability and can be a solid player, but finding what position he can make the biggest impact at, remains the unanswered question.
Julius Riddick Julius Riddick 5'9" | 195 lbs | RB Malvern Prep | 2028 PA
Julius Riddick Julius Riddick 5'9" | 195 lbs | RB Malvern Prep | 2028 PA
Out of all the athletes in this article that did not receive and invite to The Show, this was the one that surprised me the most–by a large margin. Riddick passed the eye test right away with a strong, muscular build on his 5-foot-8 frame. In my eyes, he looked pretty good through drills and was up and away the top 2028 Running Back at the camp. The Downingtown Middle School student-athlete ran low to the ground with good power. Needs to work on top end speed and acceleration, but there’s absolutely room for optimism with this kid. I’m very intrigued and look forward to watching his progression before high school.
Ali Muhsin
Ali Muhsin
Just a 2029 prospect, this was my second time seeing Muhsin in the 2023 calendar year. He attended our PRZ Next camp in New Jersey this past January and then saw him again this weekend at the Next Gen camp. He’s really small right now, but he’s also just in sixth grade. Showed off some nice speed and decent wiggle, but physically got pushed around by bigger, older kids. That said, the book is just starting to get written on Muhsin.
Rahmir Rivera Rahmir Rivera 5'8" | 170 lbs | QB NJ
Rahmir Rivera Rahmir Rivera 5'8" | 170 lbs | QB NJ
As I said above in Tashaad Brown Tashaad Brown 5’9″ | 150 lbs | QB St. Raphael Academy | 2027 State New E ‘s write up, no middle school Quarterback’s were selected to earn an invitation to The Show at the camp. Nonetheless, 2028 New Jersey Quarterback Rahmir Rivera Rahmir Rivera 5’8″ | 170 lbs | QB NJ made some nice throws at camp. Physically he isn’t there at this point when looking at a nationwide talent pool, but looks like he’s grown a little bit since I saw him in December and January. He was a member of the AYF National Championship-winning Brick City Lions team this past season and is surrounded by some big time playmakers. Looking forward to seeing what another year of pre-high school ball brings for the 2028 prospect.
Charles Goldsborough
Charles Goldsborough
While older brother Zion Goldsborough, a 2027 Wide Receiver, earned an invitation to The Show, Charles did not. However, that doesn’t mean there weren’t a ton of positives to come out of his performance. He has a good build for a Running Back in just the seventh grade. From what I can tell, looks like one of those players who plays better in pads than in a camp setting. My biggest take away is that he runs too stiff right now. There’s no fluidity or looseness to his game–plays too rigid and robotic at this point. I’m not a Running Back coach, nor do I pretend to be, but if he can just relax and not play so tense I think it’ll help his agility and overall game. There’s ability here…just needs to tap into it more.
Maddox Johnson
Maddox Johnson
Wrapping up the athletes in this article is 2029 Linebacker Maddox Johnson of Pennsylvania. The sixth-grader at St. Thomas originally signed up for camp as a Running Back but took a lot of reps with the Linebacker group. Though he didn’t earn an invite to The Show, there’s room for optimism here. His size is a plus, as his length. He also wasn’t afraid to mix it up with guys three or four years older than him. He’s very raw fundamentally–from his stance to initial read step through the end of the play. He has some natural ability but needs to work on sharpening the other parts of his game. Hope I’ll get a chance to see him live again over the next 2.5 years before high school.
