However, having a quarterback who excels at the position while helping to elevate their teammates is a must for every successful program. Very few things excite a coaching staff more than having a talented quarterback who they can build around for years to come, which brings us to the players being covered in this article.
Each one of these players has, at the very least, one more high school season ahead of them. Some have already made a name for themselves, while the others are eagerly improving their craft when the time comes for them to take the keys to the offense.
With that being said, let’s take a look at seven rising star quarterbacks.
Brayden Dorman Brayden Dorman 6'5" | 200 lbs | QB Vista Ridge | 2023 State CO – Vista Ridge – 6’3”, 185lbs – 2023
Dorman is currently leading the state in passing yards and touchdowns in his second season as a high school player. Over the course of the first four games, he has a stat line of 112 completions on 167 attempts for 1,529 yards (382 ypg) with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. Dorman is a highly touted quarterback who earned a scholarship offer from Iowa State as a freshman. Many people in the state expect him to finish his high school career as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever come out of Colorado.
Keegan Patterson Keegan Patterson 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Longmont | 2022 State CO – Longmont – 6’0”, 175lbs – 2022
Patterson is the second-leading passer in the state with 1,507 yards, putting him at the heels of the top spot. So far, he has 122 completions on 171 attempts with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has 40 carries for 133 yards and nine touchdowns as a rusher, putting his scoring tally at 21 total touchdowns. Patterson is an electrifying player who has pinpoint accuracy with a rifle for an arm and next level field awareness. He definitely belongs on the list of elite Colorado players.
Zach Friedman – Ralston Valley – 6’2”, 185lbs – 2022
When thinking of a quarterback who can be a solid game manager and a field general, Friedman is a perfect fit for that role. After four games, he has 51 competitions on 81 attempts for 663 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also tallied 77 rushing yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns, bringing his scoring total to nine touchdowns.
Will Schrotenboer – Resurrection Christian – 6’2”, 203lbs – 2022
Schrotenboer has had an awe-inspiring season so far. He has a stat-line of 39 completions on 62 attempts for 631 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also rushed for 68 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. In addition to being a very versatile athlete, Schrotenboer is also a left-handed quarterback. With his mixture of size, running ability, ball accuracy, and left-handed dominance, Schrotenboer is definitely a name to watch out for.
Colton Allen Colton Allen 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Valor Christian | 2022 State CO – Valor Christian – 6’3”, 195lbs – 2022
Being a quarterback on the team with one of the country’s top running backs can have its benefits, especially for the QB2. For Allen, it means that he gets to see his fair share of playing time in almost every game. Over the course of three games, he has 12 completions of 15 attempts for 182 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Needless to say, Valor’s quarterback room is a revolving door of top talent.
Jonathan Broadus Jonathan Broadus 6'1" | 200 lbs | ATH Grandview | 2022 CO – Grandview – 6’0”, 190lbs – 2022
Broadus is a quarterback who has a senior starter in front of him but has had a few opportunities to show his star potential. He has made valuable use of his limited playing time, totaling 103 passing yards and one touchdown from seven completions on 10 attempts. He also has 39 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries. Broadus is the type of athlete who is more than just a backup quarterback; he’s a player whose athleticism gets used in certain game situations. It’s safe to say that Grandview will simply be reloading one show-stopping quarterback after another.
Marte Russell Marte Russell 6'0" | 185 lbs | LB Cherry Creek | 2023 State CO – Cherry Creek – 6’0”, 190lbs – 2023
Russell is another exciting player holding the QB2 tag for the moment. Due to him being on such a dominant team, Russell has found himself getting a healthy dose of playing time. He has seven completions of 12 passing attempts for 84 yards, and he has rushed for 47 yards with one touchdown on 12 carries. With a ceiling as high as his, the future for the Bruins is in great hands.
