Last Friday night, the state of Michigan got to see two titans battled it out at Novi High School for the chance to play for a D1 State title. The Tiger of Belleville played host to the red hot Technicians of Cass Tech. Belleville, the undefeated, reigning state champions , led by the #1 QB in the Class of 2025, [player_tooltip player_id='247690' first='Bryce' last='Underwood']. Versus the 3 year field general, and Ferris State commit, [player_tooltip player_id='193362' first='Leeshaun' last='Mumpfield']. In case you missed this instant classic… Here's your recap.

The first quarter started off with Belleville scoring on THE FIRST PLAY!!! But the play was called backed for a holding penalty. The Tigers would still cap off their first drive with a TD from the ground game with RB, Colby Reed breaking a big run from 43 yards out. Belleville's next drive and Cass Tech's two drives in the first quarter all ended with punts.

End of 1st 7-0 Belleville

The fireworks really took place in the 2nd, starting with Belleville striking once again with QB, [player_tooltip player_id='247690' first='Bryce' last='Underwood'] connecting with ATH, [player_tooltip player_id='251363' first='Kevin' last='Simes'], who took a little shovel pass off a jet motion and broke it 35 yards to the house. Things started looking bad for Cass Tech, as the Tigers were up 14-0, but the tables turned real quick. Cass found the end zone through the air via Senior QB, [player_tooltip player_id='193362' first='Leeshaun' last='Mumpfield'] to TE, [player_tooltip player_id='234420' first='Khamari' last='Anderson'] from 14 yards. The ensuing kickoff Cass Tech recovered an onside kick! That drive was capped off by Grand Valley commit, Sean Hodges, as he punched in the TD for the Technicians. Game tied 14-14. Underwood and the Tigers offense finally got back on the field and the unthinkable happened… Underwood was picked off by [player_tooltip player_id='329420' first='Alex' last='Graham'] who returned the interception all the way back for a TD!!!

Halftime 21-14 Cass Tech

After the half, Cass received the ball with the lead and just need to play clock manager, but a costly fumble gave the ball back to the Tigers. The whole second half turned into a defensive battle, with both teams either punting the ball away or being forced to turnover on downs. QB, [player_tooltip player_id='247690' first='Bryce' last='Underwood'] must have been saving the best for last… because with time ticking away in the 4th, the Tigers needed to score or their season was over, and that's exactly what they did! Underwood called his own number on the ground and punched in a 4 yard TD win a minute left to tie the ball game!!! The game took a wild turn after that, with one minute left on the clock, Cass Tech's Freshmen Phenom, [player_tooltip player_id='212358' first='Corey' last='Sadler'] almost took the kickoff back for a touchdown setting Cass up with amazing field position with seconds left in the game!! Cass sent out the field goal unit for the win… but this story wouldn't end like that. The FG was missed!! And we have OVERTIME!

21-21 End of regulation

In OT, Cass started with the ball and was capped off with a 15 yard TD from Mumpfield to Sadler, PAT was good! Now Belleville's turn with their back to back title dreams on the line… and that dude [player_tooltip player_id='247690' first='Bryce' last='Underwood'] put the game in his hand. Underwood took in a 4 yard TD on the ground! PAT ties it, 2 pts wins it… Belleville without a doubt decided to go for 2!! Underwood yet again, called his own number and took it in for 2!!!! Belleville WINS!!!!!

[player_tooltip player_id='247690' first='Bryce' last='Underwood'] is exactly what he is advertised to be… a superstar! The 6'3 sophomore is currently the #1 QB in the class of 2025 in the country and looks the part in every game I have seen him play. His pose, and command of the offense is a thing of beauty and man can he sling the rock. Great zip, quick release, incredible placement and accuracy are just a few things to be amazed by with you see this dude play. Against Cass, Underwood showed a side to him that isn't talked about a lot and that's his mobility. Very dangerous with the power read game, and for a team like Belleville who runs jet sweep very well… look for the Tigers to run that power read a little more this Saturday, for the D1 State Championship.

Sean Hodges has been a Tailback that I have been following all season and man is he the real deal. Grand Valley is getting an absolute workhorse with him next season. Sean is a true 3 down back that is an old school gritty football player. Great vision, lowers the shoulder, can play inside the tackles but also stretch you wide with outside zone. Very impressed with this kids game and excited to see him continue that same eagerly for the Lakers the next few years.
