As recruits flip and change their minds like they are looking for the cold side of the pillow, Chavis has been rock-stead this entire time. Union City’s Soaring Eagle will now swoop down to the City of Brotherly Love as he stayed true to his word, today formally signing with Temple University.

About a month ago Chavis had announced his commitment to Temple University. After finally getting my own eyes on him in person it was as clear as day why he is an FBS-caliber talent. Aside from having the requisite size, athleticism, and speed to succeed at that level, he has a competitive edge and motor that permeates through his game. Awfully aggressive, Chavis does an outstanding job of jamming receivers at the LOS. Unlike many in this type of camp setting, he showed an internal awareness to get hands-off his matchup to avoid what would be called a penalty in the game. I realize I already spoke to his athleticism, but it is worth noting once more that he runs like the wind and sticks to receivers stride-for-stride downfield.

Union City is a program that I have covered often as of late, and deservedly so, as they are flush with talent. Recently one of their no-fly zone defensive backs from the class of 2024 has determined where he will continue to mature as a student, athlete, and man over the next several years. Lead defensive back Chavis will be heading to Philly to play for Temple University. The Owls beat out several prestigious academic institutions, notably Air Force, Boston College, Fordham, Lehigh, UMass, and UPenn. Look out for iron-sharpening-iron as Chavis will face fellow Temple commit Quarterback Chris Dietrich Chris Dietrich 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Pope John | 2024 State NJ in practice very soon.

Union City may be home to the Soaring Eagles, but DB Denzel Chavis Denzel Chavis 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB Union City | 2024 State NJ makes sure Roosevelt Stadium is a no-fly zone. The 5’10” 170lb CB made 36 stops, 5 PBUs, and 2 Ints; however, his film shows that he is much more active than those numbers might suggest.
The first thing that teams should be aware of is that you are not going to bust a big play down the sideline to Chavis’ side. Chavis is super-aggressive in playing run support. Even when in man coverage, he flies in fast and furious to get in on the play. Chavis is equally as determined to get his hands on and tip the pass, no matter what. So many pass attempts thrown in his direction are unsuccessful because they are deflected. Additionally, he times up his collisions well to avoid being penalized when breaking up pass attempts or, at a minimum, make sure tackles for minimal gains if the ball is caught. When manned-up, Chavis sticks to defenders like glue and allows zero-to-none separation and does not get faked out on route fakes or double-moves. It is really hard to find something for Chavis to improve on. I suppose it would just be to turn some of those deflected passes into turnovers so we can see more of him with the ball in his hands.
Chavis is back for redemption this season. Expectations for the Soaring Eagles have soared based off of their play last season. This is a dangerous team that has a bullseye on everyone else’s back.

Denzel Chavis Denzel Chavis 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB Union City | 2024 State NJ fits the definition of a shut down corner. Letting up only 3 catches in all of 2022, this man was glued to the receiver and never gave an itch of separation. This in part comes from his explosive change of direction. Denzel has the unique ability to stop on a dime and break on the ball in any direction. He is a sure tackler, and needs to get more attention from big time programs. He received his first D1 offer from Boston College in January, and if he continues playing the way he has, we should see another 20 or so offers head his direction.
