Recruiting Report: David Roddy (2019)

Breck's David Roddy is going to have to make many decisions over the next handful of months. Roddy is one of Minnesota's top football players and one of the top basketball players in the state. Not only will he likely have to decide – eventually between basketball and football. He will also have to decide what school he wants to attend as well as – for football – what position he wants to play. Even though it has closed some doors, Roddy has already made one decision. If he plays football, he is going to play quarterback. The Mustangs had an up and down season. "We got off to a great 3-0 start," Roddy said. "Then we went 0-3. Some kids got banged up, and we struggled with that, but then we finished the regular season strong. Things just didn't go our way that first playoff game." Roddy felt the season was special for many reasons. "It was a growing season for me – not just as a player, but as a leader. Playing with my older brother for the last time was special. Those memories I will cherish for a long time." On the field, Roddy felt he grew too. "The season went pretty good. There are things I need to work on - I need to be more consistent. I am very strong in the pocket, but I can always improve that. Improving my reads and stuff will come with more reps and more film work. I am also working on ball placement and accuracy." A two-way player, Roddy not only starts at quarterback but also at defensive end. "I am very athletic. God blessed me with size and strength, so I use that to the best of my ability," Roddy said. "The length that I have helps batting down balls and getting into the quarterbacks' faces as soon as possible. My footwork from playing basketball helps me get leverage when I need to." On offense, Roddy can do a little bit of everything. "I can stay in the pocket and throw on the run," the 6'5"248-pound athlete said. "I feel I am very accurate throwing on the run. I have a strong arm and can get the ball down the field." Roddy is not only one of the top football players in the state – ranked 13th by NFN – he is also one of the top basketball players in Minnesota. "I can play the one through four positions – wherever the coach needs me to be," the Breck and Howard Pulley player said. "My biggest strength is my ability to facilitate. I love to make my teammates better. It is always gratifying to see my teammates getting better. Also, my size makes me kind of a walking mismatch." Roddy would like to play both sports in college, but he realizes he will likely have to have to pick one eventually. "I want to play as many sports as possible," Roddy – who's new passion is photography - said. "I have been playing both sports since I was a kid. The idea of letting go of one is difficult for me. When I pick, it won't matter what level – high major or mid-major. It depends on the right fit for me as a person, as a student and as an athlete." On the hardwood, Roddy has seven offers and is hearing lately from Northwestern. Among others, he has offers from Colorado State, Wofford, Davidson and Northern Iowa. On the football field, he is being recruited at multiple positions. He has offers from Northern Iowa and South Dakota – not at quarterback – with North Dakota State and Wyoming offering him as a quarterback. He has told the schools who are recruiting him at other positions he is not interested. "I have confidence in myself as a quarterback," Roddy said. "I have played quarterback my whole life. I can play a lot of positions, but it is my dream to play quarterback at a great college and maybe beyond." Roddy has confidence at quarterback and on the hardwood – making the decisions he has coming up even harder to make.
