The purpose was to give a platform for some of the top athletes in the Carolinas directly to multiple historically black colleges and universities. Over 30 colleges and universities were in attendance with a total of 87 coaches including 8 HBCU Head Coaches. The event was a landmark success for putting players in the Carolinas on a pedestal, led by Charlotte Football Insiders.
Izay Bridges Izay Bridges 5'8" | 160 lbs | WR Shelby | 2024 State NC – Class of 2024 – Shelby High School – Nicknamed ’Flash’, Izay Bridges Izay Bridges 5'8" | 160 lbs | WR Shelby | 2024 State NC is a home-run hitter in the truest sense of the word as you can see in the above highlight from this past season’s state playoffs. As a sophomore, Bridges had over 1600 all-purpose yards and 17 total touchdowns on a team that was state champions and loaded with talent. Bridges brought a playoff mindset to the HBCU Carolinas Showcase and walked away with his first offer from Mississippi Valley State. Bridges stands to have many more offers in his future as he continues to grow and mature. He has the perfect skill set to be a dominant slot receiver on the next level that can do work in the perimeter run and screen game with some excellent agility and change of direction to go along with his blazing speed – he was also part of a regional champion 4X100 relay team just as a reflection of that.
Zion Booker – Class of 2023 – Chambers High School – Zion came into the HBCU Carolinas Showcase with an offer from Charlotte and some pretty good local notoriety, but he absolutely put on a show and earned an offer from Mississippi Valley State. Zion’s incredible releases and footwork in route running create even more space as he has very good top-end speed and some very strong hands when catching the football. He can really make some special things happen in the screen game and he doesn’t play the juke game when he gets the ball in his hands – loves to go north and south and doesn’t shy away from contact. At 5’11 and 175 pounds, he will only add to his solid frame to complement his all-around game as a receiver that can play the slot or outside in any offense.
Armon Wright – Class of 2024 – Chambers High School – Wright burst onto the scene with an incredible performance in the 2020-2021 championship game with 81 yards receiving and a touchdown in the Cougars 2nd straight state championship at the time. It was only the beginning as Wright had a great overall performance in the HBCU Carolinas Showcase. Wright has very good speed and, as shown in the clip above, has the core strength already to make a tough catch, break a tackle, and go the distance at any given moment. He is also a dedicated track athlete which only enhances his abilities between the lines.
Sean Walker – Class of 2023 – Chambers High School – Sean is another absolute speed demon at the WR position – his game is similar to Izay Bridges Izay Bridges 5'8" | 160 lbs | WR Shelby | 2024 State NC mentioned earlier, however, he can play outside as well as slot to take advantage of matchups when the Cougars see a loaded box to stop the running game. Walker stands at 5’10 and 165 pounds and turned heads at the showcase by running by just about every defensive back that was in attendance. Walker will be a steal for any college that does their homework and have a spot for a playmaker that can open up himself and his teammates just by the speed you have to respect for him.
Donavan Pauling-Outlaw – Class of 2025 – South View High School – Pauling-Outlaw stands at 5’9 and 165 pounds, and he really impressed for a young player with great footwork and straight-line speed. This was a bit of a coming-out party for him, and he will be someone I’m eager to watch and see how a performance like this translates going into his sophomore season. I expect for him to play a big role in his team’s offensive attack.
