Friday was the start of Friday Night Lights at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, It is considered the start of the summer recruiting season for Nebraska. For the first time recruits from Freshman all the way to JUCO get to show off their skills in front of Scott Frost and the rest of the Huskers coaching staff. There was a lot of players from across the state and even a few from out of state. Recruits get to show off their talents in front of one of the biggest College Football programs in the nation. The recruits participated in many drills to show off their premiere skills in front of the position coaches for the Huskers. After watching these different groups I have a few players here who I think really showed off their skills on Tom Osborne field. One of the best parts of this camp was just seeing the diversity among the athletes and that they came from every part of Nebraska.
ILB [player_tooltip player_id="340488" first="Isaiah" last="Weber"] 5’7 170 LBS Gretna
Isaiah like most players has had experience on both sides of the ball, however he definitely excels on the defensive side of the ball. Last season he had 35 total tackles along with 3.0 tackles for a loss and a caused fumble. At the camp Isaiah showed off his coverage skills and linebacker skills guarding against the pass. His skills in the back field is what impressed us the most from him was his slant coverages. One of the best things Isaiah has to offer is how he defends against the run. during the drills and in his footage on defense he always gets right to the ball shedding blocks and pushing through. I can’t wait to see more of his skills this fall.

TE/DE [player_tooltip player_id="239993" first="Race" last="McClure"] 6’3 215 LBS Ogallala
Race was one of my favorites on Friday and he really showed for it. the drills really showed how he can use his size to his advantage and make the DBs pay if they make any small mistake. Race has had an amazing career when it comes to his stats. Last season he had 11 receptions totalling 257 yards and 4 touchdowns. On the other side of the ball he has also excelled with 28 solo tackles and 33 assists totalling to 61 tackles last season and averaging 7.6 tackles per game. Last season also saw him making 6 sacks. Race is a monster on the gridiron and he will definitely be helping lead Ogallala to the top next season.

ILB Seth Erickson 6’1 180 LBS York
Seth was another Inside linebacker who I also thought was really good. Inside linebackers have a few jobs and it’s up to the skill of the player to know when and where to go. Seth has this down being able to cover inside passes man or zone. and with being able to get to the ball if it’s a rushing play. He exceeded at this in his drills and his stats show he exceeded at it on the field too. Last season he had 25 tackles averaging 8.3 a game and a fumble recovery in playing only 3 varsity games. 2 of his tackles were TFLs. I cannot wait to see him play more games this season.
TE [player_tooltip player_id="226965" first="Carsten" last="Bluhm"] 6’5 210 LBS Lincoln Southeast
Carsten is another monster of a tight end. From what we saw he is the perfect TE when it comes down to his size and strength. From his footage I believe his biggest strength is his ability to block and keep blocking downfield. His size helps him shed and keep on blocks keeping the defense out of the way of the running back. Watching him at Friday Night Lights was fun along with his Hudl footage is great.
WR Micah Hackbart 5’11 170 LBS Seward
Micah is fast and a great route runner Micah really went off with some great catches last season and at Friday Night lights. He can take it all the way from a small pass or go and reach out in the corner of the endzone to take the ball. Hie other great ability is just making guys miss. His hudl shows exactly what he can do once the ball is thrown his way. Micah is always in the right spot for a pass and it is very impressive.

Friday Night Lights is one of the best ways for athletes to show off not only their skills but to gret a close look to see what it’s like to be around a Divison 1 football program. The players and coaches helping run the event gives these athletes a great chance to find out what they need to work on. As the off season plows ahead everyone will be getting more and more excited for the regular season to start in November.
