But like many promising recruits, it has stalled a bit since live football action has been largely halted in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Going into the summer before his senior year, the dynamic signal caller said he had been in contact with several Division-I programs including Washington State, Utah, Kansas State, Boise State and Colorado State. He even has a pair of Division-II offers on the table from West Texas A&M and Fort Lewis.
That’s not a bad list, to be sure.
But never one to sit around idly, and with the ultimate goal of playing in a Power 5 conference, Woolverton has spent whatever time available to him under present circumstances training and improving in the hope of garnering a few more offers before he has to make his final decision.
“I’m talking to a few big schools that I really like,” Woolverton said. “I’m talking to some smaller D-I schools that I really like, as well. So I’m really looking at all my options and trying to find the right fit. Basically, I’m just waiting to see who offers. I think I’m a little behind in the offers because of corona and not being able to go up to any schools. But I’ll just keep working and we’ll see what happens.”
With his recruitment and exposure limited by the COVID-19 pandemic, Woolverton said several schools want to see what he does in the first several games of his senior campaign. So, he’s certainly hoping high school football will be played in Colorado this fall. Woolverton added that if schools offer him before spring semester, he would likely commit and try to get there early for the spring.
At 6-foot-2, Woolverton has a strong arm and an athletic solid frame. A three-sport athlete (football, baseball and basketball), he also has great footwork and running ability that allow him to make things happen when plays break down.
So far in his high school career, Woolverton has played in 24 games and thrown for 4,525 yards. He can claim 47 passing touchdowns to seven interceptions and a career completion rate of 72 percent. As a junior in 2019, he threw for 1,941 yards and 23 touchdowns, also rushing for 1,005 yards and 15 scores, while leading the Demons to the Class 3A state quarterfinals where they lost 21-14 to eventual runner-up Pueblo South. He was voted first-team all conference in the South Central League.
Though he’d love an opportunity to play in a Power 5 conference, Woolverton also said he’s open to any and all options.
“I’ll go play wherever,” Woolverton said. “Wherever, whatever the offense, I’m just ready to go play.”
Before that happens, Woolverton has one more year at Durango and he plans to make the most of it. In fact, he thinks the Demons have enough firepower returning to challenge for the 3A state title.
“I’m very excited for how our team is looking right now,” Woolverton said. “I think this is the furthest we’ve been at this point in the season in my four years at the school. So, I’m very excited with where we are right now and I think we can do some big things.”
Apart from his high school team, Woolverton trains with Jenkins Elite and Six Zero Academy.
