With that said, we are going to take a look at the top skill position players from as many districts as possible in the state before fall camps begin.
Some of these players are already receiving college interest, while others are looking to catch the eye of that right coach.
Trey King, Jr. – Burlington
One-half of a two-headed monster at running back for Burlington is Class of 2021’s Trey King, Jr.
Last year, King ran for 493 yards on 123 carries, scoring four touchdowns. His teammate, Class of 2022’s Bryant Williams, added 561 and eight scores.
The pair should be tough to stop this season again. King also hauled in seven passes and had 18 tackles on defense while averaging over 34 yards per kickoff return.
Will Larson – Fort Madison
Handling the quarterback duties for Fort Madison once again this fall will be Will Larson.
As a junior, Larson completed 107 of 227 attempts for 1,162 yards with 10 touchdowns. He averaged almost 11 yards per completion and carried a 90 rating.
On the ground, Larson added 263 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. He also made 36 tackles on defense, recovered two fumbles and picked off a pass.
Anthony Potratz – Keokuk
A deep threat at all times, Anthony Potratz hauled in 20 passes last year with seven of them going for touchdowns.
The Keokuk wide receiver finished with 397 yards, averaging almost 20 yards per reception. He also made 26 tackles on defense including 5.5 for loss while picking off three passes and returning one of those for a score.
Corey Skinner – Keokuk
The other half of the talented duo at Keokuk is quarterback Corey Skinner.
Skinner is coming off a season in which he completed 76 of 150 passes for 1,159 yards with 12 touchdowns. He also ran for another 487 yards and scored three times.
Along with playing defense, Skinner also handled punting duties, averaging just over 26 yards per kick.
Jack Johnson – Mount Pleasant
While Mount Pleasant will be breaking in a new quarterback, whoever handles those duties has some special weapons to work with.
Jack Johnson, a member of the Class of 2021, ran for 690 yards and scored nine touchdowns last year for the Panthers. He was second on the team in both categories behind the graduated Logan Bass.
Johnson also hauled in 13 passes for 162 yards with two touchdowns while recording 41.5 tackles on defense.
Chase Williamson – Mount Pleasant
Another big-time target at Mount Pleasant is Chase Williamson.
Williamson caught 23 passes last year for 478 yards and five scores, and with Rylan Seberg graduating after a 40-reception, 792-yard, 9-TD year, more could be expected out of him.
He also saw time on defense and averaged over 23 yards on 18 kickoff returns.
Wyatt Stout – Washington
It will be interesting to see what Washington’s offense looks like.
The Demons graduated Luke Turner, who passed for 1,543 yards with 17 touchdowns and ran for another 1,276 and 19 scores. However, Wyatt Stout returns to the backfield after a 732-yard, 14-TD season.
Stout posted almost six yards per carry and also hauled in seven passes for 101 yards and a TD. He added 40.5 tackles with 6.5 for loss on defense.
Zac Stout – Washington
Ethan Hunt and his almost 600 yards receiving have moved on, but the Washington offense has plenty to work with.
Zac Stout caught 23 passes for 396 yards and five scores a year ago, averaging over 17 yards per reception. He also handled kicking duties for the Demons.
