To say that the class of 2023 is stacked would be an understatement. The 2022 class saw a lot of top players coming from fundamental positions like the offensive line, tight end, and in the front seven. This class is different because it is a treasure chest for coaches looking for depth at the shiny and flashy positions like wide receiver, defensive back, edge rushers, and several athletes. The top 10 featured four elite wide receivers, a pair of disruptive edge-rushers, two bookend monster tackles, a breakout running back, and a state champion Quarterback.

[player_tooltip player_id="180280" first="Malachi" last="Coleman"] (WR/DE) | Lincoln East | 6’5" 175 lbs
Overall: 1 | WR: 1
There may not be anyone who broke onto the scene in 2021 quite like [player_tooltip player_id="180280" first="Malachi" last="Coleman"] out of Lincoln East. The 6’5" Spartan receiver was a game-changer that blew the top off of defenses and erupted as a destructive defensive end as well. Coleman and teammate [player_tooltip player_id="147508" first="Noah" last="Walters"] connected on 17 catches for 561 yards and ten of those catches crossed the plane. Coleman possesses elite speed, great release, and length to create separation for himself; his 33 yards per reception average is proof of this. He’s really good at getting open, and on the off chance, DBs can match him step for step, the odds of him being outjumped are incredibly slim. Coleman’s emergence as a defensive end was a great surprise as well. He uses the same traits that make him a dangerous receiver and translates them to when he has a hand in the dirt. His get-off and speed are too much for tackles having to drop into their sets; when he gets to the QB/ball carrier, he shows a penchant for being able to strip the ball. On the defensive side of the ball, he notched 57 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and forced four fumbles while recovering 5, not bad for a 4-star wide receiver. Coleman is a unique prospect that is still a little wet behind the ears but showed tons of potential. Several P5 FBS schools have already taken notice of Malachi’s, with teams like Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, and several others already extending offers. It’s only the start for [player_tooltip player_id="180280" first="Malachi" last="Coleman"]!

[player_tooltip player_id="217060" first="Maverick" last="Noonan"] (EDGE/OL) | Elkhorn South | 6’4" 230 lbs
Overall: 2 | DL: 1
Is there a scarier presence coming off the edge than Elkhorn South’s [player_tooltip player_id="217060" first="Maverick" last="Noonan"]? The junior edge-rusher has been a menace to offensive tackles and quarterbacks alike. At first glance, Maverick just looks like a mismatch for most o-linemen with a stacked, lengthy frame and strong, long arms. When it’s time to line up, Maverick has a non-stop motor that stays on attack mode the whole game. He can blow past linemen using his speed and bend, or he can use his strength and violent hands to bully his way into a playmaking opportunity. People tend to underestimate how fast Noonan plays and how quickly he can close distances between himself and runningbacks. Maverick also has a wide set of pass rush moves that make blocking him that much more daunting. Expect to be in a non-stop dogfight when matching up with Maverick. Teams like Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa State, Mizzou, and others have been hard to obtain Noonan’s services.

[player_tooltip player_id="217055" first="Zane" last="Flores"] (QB) | Gretna | 6’3" 190 lbs
Overall: 3 | QB: 1
The Gretna signal-caller [player_tooltip player_id="217055" first="Zane" last="Flores"] has continued to develop into a stone-cold killer on the field. After a good freshman year and breakout sophomore campaign, Zane came into his junior year with heavy expectations. He not just delivered on those expectations but even added a shiny Class A State Championship trophy on top for good measure. Flores found ways to will his team to victory week in and week out, from squeakers past Lincoln Southwest and the Papio schools, and blowout wins, a retribution win over Elkhorn South, all culminating in a gritty victory over defending champion Westside, a game that saw its only touchdown coming from Zane on the ground. Flores is a highly developed QB that is surgical when he operates, throwing smart, accurate passes while keeping the turnover risk to a minimum. He is patient in the pocket and goes through his progressions very well; once he locks in on his target, his release is smooth, and the ball leaves his hand with the perfect amount of zip. After getting a few monkeys off his back this season, a confident and reloaded Flores might be one of the most dangerous players on the field next year.

Overall: 4 | OL: 1
Husker commit [player_tooltip player_id="226945" first="Gunnar" last="Gottula"] continues to be one of the most consistent and polished players in this class. Gunnar put together another great year playing along the offensive line. He is a big, strong lineman that imposes his will on people. Gottula is a big guy at 6’6" and 270 pounds but plays a lot quicker than one would think. He has explosive hands when making contact and always makes finishes his blocks. Overall, when looking for great linemen plays, you don’t have to look further than Gunnar. His experience, ferocity, and athleticism continue to set him apart as one of the top offensive line prospects.

[player_tooltip player_id="180276" first="Benjamin" last="Brahmer"] (WR/TE) | Pierce | 6’6" 195 lbs
Overall: 5 | WR: 2
Brahmer is another 2023 player committed to the Huskers. Ben Brahmer from Pierce is a versatile pass-catcher that can split between a WR/TE combo. At 6 foot 6, he is incredibly lengthy and has the hops to outjump any corner when high pointing the football. His chemistry with QB [player_tooltip player_id="217056" first="Abram" last="Scholting"] has been fantastic to watch as they have terrorized their competition since they have both been on varsity. He hauled in 63 passes for 1,119 yards during his junior year, with 13 touchdowns. He is a true elite deep-threat and can work DBs on the short and medium routes. Brahmer continues to shine on the gridiron and has made it very clear why the Huskers rushed to secure his services.

Overall: 6 | DL: 2
Lincoln Southeast continues to pump out high-quality football players and this trend continues with [player_tooltip player_id="226949" first="Teitum" last="Tuioti"], making 2 players in the top 6. Tuioti is a game-wrecker that has been impossible to stop coming off the edge. Tuioti stepped it up as a junior, improving in every statistical category with 71 tackles and 7.5 sacks. Teitum is very explosive coming off the snap, and his get-off is one of the best in this class. He is an advanced pass-rusher who can attack with speed or power (2:56 in the clip below). He has shut down screen passes, and other pass plays designed to his side. Teitum is an impressive athlete who also splits time at tight end and is very helpful in their run blocking.

Overall: 7 | OL: 2
Knutson is a monster tackle prospect coming out of the panhandle. The towering [player_tooltip player_id="227064" first="Brock" last="Knutson"] is a menacing presence in the trenches as he stands 6’7" and 270 pounds. He is a walking bulldozer that can take down any defender in his way. He displays a strong anchor and quick footwork to get into his sets when dropping back in pass protection. Knutson uses exceptional pad level and gives himself good leverage to win his matchup even with his height. He moves very well into the second level and will continue to look for work even after he’s served up some grueling blocks. Brock is a player that has been shooting right up recruiting boards and will be one of the most sought-after Nebraska prospects in this cycle.

Overall: 8 | WR: 3
Another big, strong, deep-threat receiver that broke out this season was [player_tooltip player_id="180279" first="Kade" last="McIntyre"]. He and his older brother Koa formed one of the most devastating QB-WR combos in the state. On only 37 receptions, Kade scorched defenses for 873 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns and was making receptions averaging 23.6 yards per clip. Kade is a tough, physical receiver with a strong, lengthy frame that is oozing speed. McIntyre is an e is an automatic 6 whenever He was also a great enforcer on the edge for Bergan’s defense, recording 63 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks. McIntyre is an incredible athlete and complete football player (he also had a punt return for a touchdown) that will continue to make a splash in the recruiting trail.

Overall: 9 | RB: 1
[player_tooltip player_id="227009" first="CharMar" last="Brown"] emerged as the premier 2023 running back during his junior year. Even with a loaded backfield, Brown was able to rack up 1,067 yards and showed his nose for the endzone with 15 touchdowns. Brown runs with an excellent mix of power, balance, and speed. Once he hits the second level, his burst through lanes and his cutting ability make him one of the toughest backs to bring down. He showed his home run ability with several long touchdowns, including a 91-yarder against Papillion-La Vista South. Brown had a 4 game stretch in which he rushed for 708 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns (Also, 1 receiving touchdown in this span) and surely would’ve continued had he not been sidelined by an injury in the regular-season finale. Brown’s non-stop work ethic will continue to drive him to further his on-field development. Watch out for CharMar to come back all gas, no brakes in year 4.

[player_tooltip player_id="180278" first="Beni" last="Ngoyi"] (WR/DB) | Lincoln | 6’4" 185 lbs
Overall: 10 | WR: 4
Ngoyi has been turning a lot of heads from FBS coaches already receiving offers from Northern Illinois, Kansas State, and Pitt, to name a few, and will pick more up with summer camps. Ngoyi is an extraordinary athlete that can play wide receiver and defensive back at a very high level. His impact as a receiver was crucial for the Links offense, where he racked up 467 yards and six touchdowns. Ngoyi is so smooth when he runs his routes (Look at :17 in the clip below) and seems to just pluck the ball out of the air. Beni is a technician when he runs his routes and threatens to attack from any level. He is also a great "after the catch" receiver, and once he hits the open field, he turns on the jets and uses his blazing speed to pick up big chunk gains. Beni is a very hard worker and will take advantage of offseason camps to improve.

[player_tooltip player_id="227028" first="Sam" last="Sledge"] (OL/DL) | Creighton Prep | 6’4" 270 lbs
Overall: 11 | OL: 3
Talk about a versatile athletic big man! [player_tooltip player_id="227028" first="Sam" last="Sledge"] is awesome to watch in the trenches where he dominates on offense and defense. What makes him so much fun to watch is how fast and agile he is for a lineman. Sam is able to get to the second level and helped open up a huge hole for our #9 player [player_tooltip player_id="227009" first="CharMar" last="Brown"]. He is so physical and has such a scary mean streak when the running game gets going. Sledge is devastating when finishing his blocks and loves to serve up some pancakes. He’s a natural at using leverage to gain the upper hand and utilizes it as both an offensive and defensive lineman. [player_tooltip player_id="227028" first="Sam" last="Sledge"] is an imposing prospect and I’m excited to see how he follows up an outstanding junior year.

[player_tooltip player_id="238881" first="Kade" last="Seip"] (LB/EDGE) | Lincoln North Star | 6’3" 235 lbs
Overall: 12 | LB: 1
[player_tooltip player_id="238881" first="Kade" last="Seip"] might be one of the most overlooked players in this class. In his junior year, Seip broke out in a big way with 71 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and two sacks. His size, pursuit, and tackling mechanics really stood out to me. Seip delivers every tackle using every bit of his 6’3" 235-pound frame and does a great job wrapping up and driving through his opponent. He’s smart in his pursuit and takes good angles when going in for the tackle. What makes him an intriguing prospect is his potential as a pass rusher; with his blend of size and speed, he would be a terror coming off the edge. He is doing a great job holding down the inside linebacker spot for North Star, but I think he could help elevate the defense with some reps as an edge blitzer.

Aiden is a monster on the interior defensive line for the Elkhorn Antlers. At 280 pounds, you don’t expect him to move as fast as he does, but he can shift and stunt and rush with no problem. Betz is incredibly strong and can move and dominate offensive linemen against their will. He helped make Elkhorn one of the stingiest defenses and one of the best run defenses in Class B. Aiden excels in stopping the run and shutting down backs looking to run downhill. He is not just a run-stuffer; Betz has a plethora of pass-rush moves that help him blow past o-linemen. Betz is big, violent, fast, and ferocious and will be one of the best players in this class.

Overall: 14 | ATH: 1
The Links have a loaded ’23 class with Ngoyi and Hutchinson leading the way. Hutchinson is a fascinating and versatile player that can play on offense and defense. Adonis is an elite athlete who can gash you with his speed, has a great football IQ, and helps the team flow. Offensively, he is a mismatch anywhere he lines up and draws away attention from the other Links playmakers. He is quick off the snap and can use his hands or feet to create separation for himself. It’s hard to contain him in solely one position because of how dynamic he is as an athlete. Last year he rushed for 255 yards and caught for 234 yards, showing that he is productive in many ways. He was also a steady contributor in the secondary for the Links on defense. Hutchinson is already getting looks from P5 schools and should continue to blow up on the recruiting trail.

There is a lot to like about the upside shown by Burke’s [player_tooltip player_id="226961" first="Cayden" last="Echternach"]. The 6 foot 4, 235 pound TE showed a unique mix of size, speed, and very strong hands. Despite not having a ton of film, what we did see, showed a lot of promise. Echternach does a good job picking up yards after the catch and can shake off defenders. Cayden’s size and blocking ability make him a huge asset in the running game. Very excited to see Cayden’s continued development and higher usage during year 4.

Overall: 16 | DB: 1
[player_tooltip player_id="240003" first="TJ" last="Fitzpatrick"] was a thorn in the sides of quarterbacks throughout his junior year, as he was able to reel off nine interceptions in 10 games played. Fitzpatrick’s stellar ball-hawking ability helped him emerge as the premier defensive back in the 2023 class. He was dominant in pass coverage and was able to keep receivers in his hip pocket. TJ is a very sticky corner that is aggressive with receivers at the point of the catch; he trusts his abilities and knows he can win fights for the ball. Even with his confidence, he knows when it is time to make the safe play and the secure tackle. His closing speed and a quick flip of his hips, help attribute to his ability to seemingly be all over the field. All of this has made the dynamic DB one of the most feared returning corners.

Overall: 17 | DL: 4
If you aren’t aware of Grand Island Northwest’s [player_tooltip player_id="227030" first="Victor" last="Isele"], then this is the perfect time to get acquainted. The Viking’s defensive linemen is an absolute force in the trenches and can disrupt run and passing attacks. Isele is explosive getting off the snap and can be in the backfield before the linemen can get set. Victor uses violent hands and strength to win at the line of scrimmage and get his way into the backfield. Whether quarterbacks or runningbacks, Isele never stops pursuing and lays devastating hits when he gets to the ball carrier. During the 2020 season, Isele made 19 tackles for loss and sacked the QB 7 times, and in his two varsity seasons as a stater, he has 34 TFLs and 16 sacks. His impact reaches beyond just the "money" stats; Victor was constantly pressuring QBs, blocking punts, and drew a lot of attention away from others. Victor is a very underrated, super talented player dominating against very tough Class B competition.

Lincoln Southwest boasts one of the most talented 2023 classes in the state; at the top of the group is OLB [player_tooltip player_id="226956" first="Brogan" last="Ling"], who showed immense amounts of potential for the Silver Hawks. Even in a stacked depth chart, Ling managed to rack up 45 tackles and got to the quarterback four times. He is long, speedy, and very athletic, making him a handful coming off the edge and one of the top-rated linebackers in the class. Ling is a natural at the position, not just as a pass-rusher but in all aspects of his role. He has the athleticism to match up with ’backs and tight ends in coverage and is disruptive against the run. This is a player I think will blow up in his senior year after a spring/summer camp cycle and an increase in reps... watch out!

[player_tooltip player_id="217056" first="Abram" last="Scholting"] (QB/S) | Pierce | 6’0 180 lbs
Overall: 19 | QB: 2
The Pierce Bluejays have a very strong 2023 class (see Ben Brahmer #5), and Abram has been the catalyst for their successful run. Scholting led the Bluejays to a Class C1 state championship as a sophomore and came close to repeating as champs before falling to Columbus Lakeview in the championship game. Despite the outcome, Abram still had an all-around great season, in which he threw for 2,265 yards, 30 touchdowns, rushed for 500 yards, and scored four touchdowns on the ground. Along with racking up the yardage and touchdowns, he continued to show why he should be receiving more attention. Scholting has elite ball-placement and can make throws to every level of the field. He is very patient and poised in the pocket and makes intelligent, accurate decisions, but is still very aware of his arm talent and loves to take shots downfield. His big arm and rapport with deep-threat Brahmer has created one of the most devastating QB-WR connections in the state. Overall, Scholting is an intelligent and efficient quarterback with a cannon that is also sneaky good on the ground and a very impressive trophy case.

I am very excited to see how Lloyd responds and follows up a tremendous 2021 season. Despite not having a ton of tape and a year of varsity experience, he has shown more than enough glimpses at his playmaking ability and is one of the top deep-threats in this loaded class. Jaylen has top-end speed that can blow the top off the defense and is a problem when left alone in man coverage. He has a clean release and has a great sense of creating space for himself. He is dangerous when the ball is in his hands and could reap heavy rewards if given touches in unique ways. Lloyd has the short-area quickness to make something happen out of nothing and has a great burst when he hits his lane. Jaylen is a player with a massive amount of upside and could continue to break through in his senior year.
