Every Sunday, we take a look at the top individual performances from the week that was in high school football. This week, the playoff scenarios really started heating up and the individual performances were outstanding to see. This week’s bunch of top performers are mainly juniors as the 2023 class really shined on Friday night. Check out this week’s Top Performer feature and check back every Sunday for this feature until the end of the season!
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="38817" first="Brandon" last="Harper"] - 2023 Wide Receiver - Noble</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>12 Catches | 158 Yards | 2 Touchdowns</strong></span>
It was one of the stunning results of week nine as Noble went on the road and stunned Ardmore in overtime. We thought we were all ready for a week ten showdown between undefeated Ardmore and undefeated Lawton MacArthur. Then Noble happened. [player_tooltip player_id="38817" first="Brandon" last="Harper"] happened. The junior wide receiver and the Noble passing offense as a whole could not be slowed down on Friday night. Harper finished with 158 yards and two touchdowns and caught 12 passes on the night. But the biggest play came in overtime when Noble decided to go for the win and Harper caught the game-winning two-point conversion.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="157515" first="Chance" last="Wilson"] - 2023 Quarterback - Rejoice Christian</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>10-16 | 175 Yards | 3 Touchdowns | 16 Carries | 126 Yards | 3 Touchdowns</strong></span>
Rejoice Christian junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="157515" first="Chance" last="Wilson"] might be used to seeing his name on these weekend breakdowns when you consider the year he’s having. However, he was at it again in arguably the most important game of the year as Rejoice Christian took out perennial 2A power Adair and the Eagles are now in the driver seat for the district crown. Wilson could not be stopped as he continued to be a dual-threat monster at quarterback. He threw for 175 yards and ran for 126 yards and was very balanced when it came to his touchdown production. He scored three touchdowns on the ground and in the air.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="199075" first="DeSean" last="Mays"] - 2023 Running Back - Vian</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>30 Carries | 417 Yards | 7 Touchdowns</strong></span>
Vian has had some big performances from their junior running back [player_tooltip player_id="199075" first="DeSean" last="Mays"] but his performance in their big win over Spiro on Friday night has to be at the top of the list. Vian was in an absolute shootout with Spiro and needed the win if they were going to capture the district crown. And Mays could not be stopped as they would knock off Spiro. Mays ran for 417 yards and seven touchdowns on 30 carries. He’s without a doubt a breakout star in Class 2A and has the Wolverines right in the state title picture.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Emmett Murphy - 2022 Wide Receiver - Jones</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>5 Catches | 208 Yards | 3 Touchdowns</strong></span>
The first senior on this feature is Jones wide receiver Emmett Murphy and the Longhorns relied on a few seniors to get the job done in their dramatic 49-42 win over Prague. Murphy caught the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to play and the Longhorns held on to get the massive week nine win. On the night, Murphy caught five passes but three of those went for touchdowns and he still finished with over 200 yards receiving. Without a doubt the best catch came at the end when he gave the Longhorns the win.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="91049" first="Erik" last="McCarty"] - 2023 Running Back - McAlester</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>16 Carries | 111 Yards | 3 Touchdowns | 3 Catches | 81 Yards | 1 Touchdown | 1 Blocked Punt</strong></span>
McAlester locked up the district championship with a win over Shawnee. The Buffaloes dominated on both sides of the ball and once again their junior star [player_tooltip player_id="91049" first="Erik" last="McCarty"] led the way for the Buffaloes. He carried the ball 16 times and finished with 111 yards and three touchdowns. He also had three catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. We mentioned dominance on both sides of the ball and McCarty also blocked a punt. McCarty is certainly on the short list for Player Of The Year this year and the Buffaloes are on the short list for state title contenders in Class 5A.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="189933" first="Hudsen" last="Hill"] - 2022 Wide Receiver - Hooker</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>12 Catches | 282 Yards | 4 Touchdowns</strong></span>
The other senior standout was Hooker wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="189933" first="Hudsen" last="Hill"]. The Hooker passing offense could not be stopped as they remained undefeated on the season and Hill was the beneficiary of a lot of the throws from quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="68609" first="Gavynn" last="Parker"]. Hill finished with 282 yards and four touchdowns on 12 receptions. We mentioned Hooker remained undefeated with the win and that sets up a massive week ten showdown in Class A. Undefeated Hooker will travel to face undefeated Fairview with the district championship on the line. The playoffs came a little early for Hooker.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Isaiah Hammons - 2023 Running Back - Guthrie</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>36 Carries | 231 Yards | 3 Touchdowns</strong></span>
Ardmore-Noble wasn’t the only overtime game featuring top ten teams in Class 5A. Bishop McGuinness and Guthrie got after it at "The Rock" and the Blue Jays prevailed in another overtime classic. It was another junior standing out in this one as both teams have terrific junior running backs. But Guthrie’s Isaiah Hammons gets the shoutout here after finishing his workhorse night with 36 carries for 231 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, the Blue Jays knocked off McGuinness and set themselves up for a home playoff game for the first time in a while.
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="69271" first="Lathan" last="Boone"] - 2023 Quarterback - Booker T Washington</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>29-34 | 331 Yards | 7 Touchdowns | 78 Rushing yards | 1 Touchdown</strong></span>
Booker T Washington absolutely torched Muskogee on Friday night and junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="69271" first="Lathan" last="Boone"] had himself a career night at the expense of the Roughers. Boone threw for 331 yards and seven touchdowns and only had five incompletions on the evening. He also finished with 78 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the Hornets absolutely lit up the scoreboard. That sets Booker T Washington up with plenty of momentum as they go into a week ten clash with top ranked Bixby and the Hornets are hopeful to pull off what would be the upset of the year.
