It was tough for the Bruins offense in this game but Merrill was one guy who stood out. He produced multiple catches throughout the game, including a 4th quarter touchdown reception that provided the Bruins their only lead of the night. Merrill also gave his offense good field positions on several occasions with long kickoff returns. The future Austin Peay receiver gave a solid performance in his final high school and was one player that provided big plays for the Bruins on a night lacking offense.

Making a huge difference on the offensive side of the ball is Clayton Merrill Clayton Merrill 5'10" | 175 lbs | WR Brentwood | 2025 State TN , a wide receiver at Brentwood High School. What I like about Merrill is his ability to haul in the short pass in third-down situations as well as his ability to break tackles after the catch. I also like how Merrill can get wide open in the backfield for the clutch deep pass.

I am additionally impressed with Clayton Merrill Clayton Merrill 5'10" | 175 lbs | WR Brentwood | 2025 State TN , a wide receiver at Brentwood High School. In addition to outstanding breakaway speed, what stands out about Merrill’s playstyle is his ability to pick up yards after the catch, proving his ability to juke out the defense on the run. I also like how Merrill can break free from the defense in the backfield to haul in the deep pass.

Merrill heads into his senior year as one of the better slot receiver prospects in our senior class and a guy that can boost his stock significantly with good work in Summer camps and a breakout senior year. Ranking 10th among our receivers, Merrill is a consistent ball player that does just about everything right while providing athleticism and big play abilities. Where this Mid-Tennessee product stands out the most is with his concentration and route running. Merrill shows shifty feet and lower base body control that allows him to get in and out of his breaks quickly then haul in the pass with his strong hands. The Bruins wideout is also an excellent return man that could bring back kicks in college. His work in the slot and on special teams will be on display this Fall at Brentwood but also in Clarksville next year as last month, Merrill committed to Austin Peay.

Strengths – Just about everything this Williamson County native does on the field is clean. Merrill is a true “ball player” that knows what he is doing on the field as well as provides athleticism and big play abilities for his Bruins offense. Merrill brings several efficient traits to the playing field that should translate well to Austin Peay, where he committed to just recently. He is a crisp route runner that can create separation but also can feel out his opponent and work his way into open space. Merrill has the ability to run your intermediate routes and be your safe option or stretch the field and beat his defender over the top. This Mid-Tennessee talent is a perfect option for the slot where I think his abilities can shine the best. Besides being a big play at receiver, Merrill might also be one of the better options in this state for the return game. The Bruins senior runs well with the ball in his hands, showing running back style vision along with the ability to break away from the pack.

Development – There isn’t a whole lot to Merrill that he must improve upon. The main things would be to get faster and little quicker while also continuing to further his craft. Learning his position, especially playing in the slot, is an area where Merrill can push his game to another level.

Overview – Merrill is one of the top slot receivers in the state for a reason and a guy that still has room to grow into his abilities and possibly become a feared offensive weapon during his time at Austin Peay. He has yet to have that true breakout season for the Bruins but maybe this Fall will be his time. Merrill should be the go-to guy on offense this season and their top playmaker that can’t leave the field due to his big play abilities. Even with a less than talented crop of wideouts for the #TN2025 class, Merrill sits in the upper echelon of recruits that I could see having a big senior year and pushing his stock higher than the FCS level.

rnComing in at number five on my list is , a wide receiver at Brentwood High School. Merrill and the Bruins collected a 38-14 rout of Summit last week. Merrill makes a considerable difference down the stretch due to his quick execution off the snap and breakaway speed, showing off his ability to consistently create seperation in coverage and haul in crucial deep passes. I also like Merrill’s awareness and durable edge, proving he can shake tackles after the catch as he blasts into the endzone. Another aspect of Merrill’s playstyle that impresses is his ability to attack the ball in the air.
