The Class 6A-2 state championship game is set! #1 Sand Springs will square off with #4 Choctaw in Edmond on Friday night at 7PM. These two teams have met in each of the last three playoffs, all in the quarterfinals and Choctaw is 3-0 against the Sandites during that stretch. For Choctaw, it's a return trip to the state championship game, where they will get the opportunity to defend their title they won last season. The Yellowjackets have gotten very familiar with playing for the gold ball in Edmond. This is also their third trip in the last four seasons. On the other side you have a Sand Springs squad that has been knocking on the door of making it to the title game and now they are one win away from the gold ball. The Sandites took over the top spot in 6A-2 about a month ago as the west side district beat up on each other. In this post, we take our first look at both teams prior to their title clash on Friday night. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma later in the week, when we take a deep dive into the match-up by putting a spotlight on all of the players to watch for both teams. And be sure to check out our PRZ-Oklahoma YouTube Channel for exclusive (and free) video content, including interviews with both head coaches!

The Sand Springs Sandites came into this season as the #3 in our Class 6A-2 rankings but they were hands down the top team in the east side district. So it's not all that surprising that they've made their way to Edmond. They opened the season against Bixby and Owasso, two teams that are playing for the 6A-1 state title. They lost and started the year with an 0-2 record but they haven't lost since. They finished out non-district play with a shutout win over Bishop Kelley. And speaking of shutouts, that would start three straight shutout victories for the Sandites. They had a week eight showdown with Muskogee, the team that had dominated this district. Sand Springs left with a 49-28 victory. In week ten, the district championship was on the line in a rivalry game against Sapulpa. The Sandites prevailed 35-18 to capture that elusive district title. In the quarterfinal round, they took down a Piedmont team with ease that had stunned some of 6A-2's best throughout the season. And in the semifinals, the Sandites used all the grit they had to prevail over Putnam City. After trailing 27-7 at halftime, the Sandites outscored the Pirates 21-0 in the second half and had the game-winning two-point conversion in the final seconds to punch their ticket to the state title game. Sand Springs has finally kicked that door down and now they look to finish the job.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
1-1 All Time - 3rd Title Appearance

For just the third time in school history, Sand Springs is playing for the state championship. The Sandites are 1-1 all time in the state title game. But you have to go all the way back to 1966 to find the last time Sand Springs was the state champion. When Class 6A was split into two divisions a little over a decade ago, the Sandites were one of the better teams in the new 6A-2. They would make it to the 2015 state championship game but fell to Bixby as the Spartans were beginning the dynasty run they are still on today. A decade later, the Sandites are back in the state championship game. However, head coach Bobby Klinck has plenty of championship game experience. He won state championships as a player at Jenks. He also won championships as an assistant coach with Owasso. He also led East Central to the state title game as a head coach a little over a decade ago.

Whenever you return a four-year starter at the quarterback position, you know your offense is going to be in good shape going into a season. And for Sand Springs, they have the benefit of that four-year starter being arguably the best quarterback in the state of Oklahoma. This season, he's helped guide the Sandites to scoring nearly 40 points per game. But the Sandites have been more balanced, specifically during this playoff run. They've consistently played at a high level this season and they'll look to finish the job on Friday night. With one of the top QB-WR duos in the state, they can light up the scoreboard.

DEFENSIVE PRODUCTION - 16.2 Points Per Game

Coming into this season, all eyes were going to be on the offense because of the firepower the Sandites had returning on that side of the ball. But the truth is, the defense has been one of the better units in the state, giving up just 16.2 points per game this season and if you take those first two games against the 6A-1 powers out, that average is even more impressive this season. This unit has five shutouts on the season and they'll need to play at that championship level on Friday night if they are going to slow down a Choctaw offense, that is right up there when it comes to explosive players.

The Choctaw Yellowjackets came into this season as defending state champions but they were still hungrier than ever to prove they are the "GOLD Standard" in Oklahoma HS football. It has been an absolutely bumpy road in 2025 but the Yellowjackets have been absolute road warriors. They started the season with three straight games on the road, with the first two coming in Texas and Kansas. The third was a trip to see reigning 6A-1 champion Bixby. Following a 1-2 start, the Yellowjackets opened up district play with a win over Piedmont in their home opener. They went back on the road the following week and were upset by Putnam City and fell from the top spot in 6A-2. Two weeks later, another road loss, this time to Stillwater as their second half rally came up short. They haven't lost again. They finished the regular season with a 6-4 record and third in the district. That meant they had to play in the first round, where they beat Putnam City North with ease. Then another road trip to the Tulsa area to face Sapulpa in the quarterfinals. They won 43-28, setting up a rematch with Stillwater in the semifinals. And the game was reversed from the October meeting as it was Choctaw who jumped out to a big first half lead and then held off a Stillwater rally to punch their ticket to the state title game on Friday night.

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
2-2 Record - 5th Title Appearance

Choctaw is back in the state championship game for the third time in the last four seasons. This is their 5th state championship game appearance in school history and they currently hold a 2-2 record. Before winning it all last season, it had been a long time since the Yellowjackets were state champions. 1960 was the first state title and they had to wait 64 years to capture their second gold ball. But for the Yellowjackets, there is no doubt that this could be considered the "golden age" of Yellowjacket football. Prior to 2020, Choctaw had only made the state title game one time, when they won it all in 1960. In 2020, the Yellowjackets made a surprising run to the state title game and that was their introduction to Class 6A-2 as a team that was going to be in the mix year after year. Four of their five state championship game appearances have happened since 2020.

OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION - 38.8 Points Per Game

The Yellowjackets had one of the best offenses in Class 6A-2 this season. They come into the state championship game averaging 38.8 points per game. When we looked at the firepower Choctaw was returning on the offensive side of the ball coming into this season, seeing them as one of the top scoring offenses in the state isn't all that surprising. They might have the best QB-RB duo in the class and one of the top duos in the state. And their offense has been firing on all cylinders over the last month. They're playing some of their best football right now and look to continue that in the title game.

DEFENSIVE PRODUCTION - 21.7 Points Per Game

Coming into the state championship game, Choctaw is actually better on the defensive side of the ball compared to the 2024 title team. They've given up 21.7 points per game this season, which is two points per game better than their season average going into last year's state title game. The defensive side of the ball has been outstanding this season. They get stops when they need to and have a great blend of next level prospects and program guys that have been starting and producing for two or three seasons now. Defense will be critical to slow down Sand Springs and their high-powered passing attack.
