The class of 2027 is loaded with quarterback talent and it was on full display last fall. In fact, some of the best passing numbers in the state ended up being delivered by sophomore gunslingers.

It usually takes a couple seasons of experience and maturity, coupled with a significant amount of off-season fine-tuning, before it all starts to click and young QB's start lighting things up.

Usually, that is...

For a very small percentage the stars align early. When a young gun brings the athleticism and attitude to a program that knows how to coach QB's, there is an early opening and he is surrounded by a competitive team, there is an opportunity for sparks to fly.

Like with the guys below.

In many instances, these young guns are able to put up impressive yardage totals, but some of the support metrics still need some work. Typically freshman or sophomore QB's are not as efficient throwing as they will be once experience and maturity come into play. Efficiency in this context can be measured in three areas of emphasis year over year: 1) higher completion percentages; 2) fewer interceptions; and 3) higher passer ratings.

Where advanced underclassmen QB's typically generate completion percentages on average in the low-to-mid-50% range, the elite seniors are usually in the 63-70+% range. They also usually scale back their interceptions to single digits and have passer ratings in the 120+ range (reminder: anything above 108 is considered elite).

And, obviously, there are numerous factors that go into the maturity of a high school quarterback's game, so these stats are not considered to be mutually exclusive indicators of game maturity or efficiency, but more like key data points to consider in the evaluation process.

Consequently, when you take all that into consideration it makes what the five young gun QB's below have already accomplished to date that much more impressive.

In this report we are going to take a closer look at five rising-star '27 quarterbacks who optimized their early opportunities a year ago and are flying into their junior seasons with a big-time tailwind. These battle-tested warriors are among the best in the state at the position and are getting ready to put an exclamation point on it this fall.

So without further adieu, let's take a closer look at what the next wave of missile launchers are doing in the off-season getting ready for the 2025 season.

Coming off a late-season knee injury that kept him out of 7v7 this spring, he is already making up for lost time. Recently returning from William Jewell, he is getting ready for the Sharp Performance camp at Bethany on May 27 and then Washburn in early June. He is also planning on hitting camps at KU, K-State, North Dakota State, Missouri State and Arkansas State. He is coming off a standout sophomore season as an athletic dual-threat quarterback with some seriously mature skill sets for his age. Last year he completed 102 of 161 passes for 1,746 yards, a 64% completion, 19 touchdowns and a passer rating in the 125+ range. He can thread the needle from the pocket or when the play breaks down throw off platform and under duress with pin-point ball placement. As a runner he is fast and elusive and particularly dangerous extending plays on the perimeter. Get your popcorn handy, this guy is going to put on a show this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1113114' first='Luke' last='Stewart'] , 5'10, 165, Council Grove, '27. When the dust settled after the 2024 season it was obvious the Braves had a ringer behind center. For the year he completed 131 of 238 passes for 1,678 yards, a 55% completion percentage, 17 TD passes to 10 picks; and along the way set numerous school passing records while driving his team deep into the playoffs. He has an exceptional arm with seamless mechanics in the pocket. When the play breaks down he expertly extends plays, throwing well on the move and can make throws from any number of launch angles. He is also already adept at making the tough throws, layering the ball between defenders, surgical strikes in tight windows and throwing high-velocity second level darts. He is hitting it hard in the off-season fine-tuning his elite skill sets throwing to his receivers and getting ready to go camping at Washburn, Emporia State and K-State. Right now he is heavy into baseball, but has his eye on the fall. This guy is going to burn it up in 2025.

[player_tooltip player_id='1445596' first='Justice' last='Criniere'] , 6'0 185, QB, CPA-Lenexa '27. He is another big-time talent flying under the radar somewhat but is changing that everytime he hits the field. He has been off and running on a sizzling start to the camp-combine circuit, claiming MVP awards at the last two camps he attended and is just getting started with more to come this summer. He is coming off a superb season a year ago when he completed 94 of 166 passes for 1,543 yards, gained 521 yards on the ground and accounted for 37 total TD's with only six picks. He has a powerful arm and can fire quick-strike slants, rifle bullets on deep comebacks or scorch the sidelines with the long-bomb touch pass. He is a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators as he is especially dangerous on the move when extending plays, sprint-out passing on the perimeter or shredding defenses on the RPO. His off-season grind is already producing dividends as he is setting PR's in the weight room. Get ready for a dominating encore season as this guy is going to go off this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1521132' first='Zander' last='Ford'] , 6'0, 175, QB/DB, Rose Hill, '27. It has been a busy off-season for this multi-sport gunslinger as he just wrapped up basketball season leading his team in points, steals and assists and was all state honorable mention for his efforts. He is currently training with Coach Rashad Daniels locally on speedwork and agilities and is continuing to stay in shape playing hoops. Last fall he put up good numbers, throwing for 1,700+ yards while completing 62% of his passes and fired a dozen touchdown passes to nine picks in seven games. He showed glimpses of things to come as in one three-game span in the middle of the season, completed 50 of 80 passes for 873 yards and seven scoring strikes. He has a live arm with a tight throwing motion, smooth release and great anticipation. He throws the ball well with composure under duress and is adept at keeping his eyes downfield while locating open receivers on broken plays. With a new coach coming on board there will be questions concerning the team's potential, but not about this guy, he is getting ready to dominate this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='934979' first='Pete' last='Dorsey'] , 6'1, 180, QB/DB, Wellsville, '27. And last, but certainly not least, we have one of the more dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the state who is coming off a solid season with not much fanfare. At least not much yet. Last fall he completed 57 out of 103 passes for just under 900 yards, a 55% completion percentage and threw nine TD's to only one interception for an elite-level passer rating of 109. He can pick teams a part throwing the ball out of the pocket but is particularly dangerous in the run-pass option game or extending plays on the perimeter with his legs. As a runner he picked up an additional 400+ yards rushing and nine more touchdowns to give him 1,300+ total yards and 18 total touchdowns. On the other side of the ball he piled up 25 tackles and had a couple of tackles for loss. He is not planning on hitting any camps or combines, choosing to stay focused on the Eagle's off-season training program working with his teammates. So far that appears to be a winning formula. Get this guy in your sights as he is going to take it to another level this fall.

In conclusion, get out and see these guys hit it hard this fall – you will not be disappointed. Also, DM me via X if you run across any other players flying under the radar.
