In case you missed it, you can check out our Preseason Rankings RIGHT HERE. Overview (Class 6A-D1 Preseason Ranking: #1) The Owasso Rams came into the 2020 season as defending champions but champions that had to rebuild with new faces on both sides of the ball. We learned very quickly that despite all the new faces, the Rams were reloaded for another title run as they dominated the regular season and entered the playoffs with a perfect 10-0 record. Owasso was absolutely shelled by eventual champion Jenks in the semifinals and the Rams had to go back to the drawing board this offseason. Here’s what’s crazy about Owasso going into the 2021 season. They are our preseason favorite in 6A-D1 and they have to rebuild the entire offensive line. That matters, but not as much for Owasso. They have weapons everywhere. They bring back their quarterback who has had a great offseason. They are legitimately three-deep at running back and four to five-deep at wide receiver. Weapons everywhere on offense. On the defensive side of the ball they have arguably the best defensive line unit in the state and the linebackers and secondary aren’t too shabby either. The glaring weakness right now is the inexperience along the offensive line but like we said, it probably won’t matter. The offense is going to be one of the best in the state because of their depth at the skill positions. And the defense has the ability to be one of the best in 6A-D1 as an overall unit. Last year, Jenks was on a revenge tour after falling short in 2019. History could be repeating itself this fall but with the Rams as they pursue what would be their third state championship in the last five seasons.
2020 Results (11-1 Record - Lost In 6A-D1 Semifinals) Aug. 28 - Beat Edmond Santa Fe 48-21 Sept. 4 - Beat Fayetteville, AR. 31-17 Sept. 11 - Beat Broken Arrow 32-6 Sept. 25 - Beat Union 34-14 Oct. 2 - Beat Norman North 33-22 Oct. 9 - Beat Edmond North 34-7 Oct. 15 - Beat Southmoore 43-13 Oct. 23 - Beat Mustang 43-14 Oct. 30 - Beat Moore 43-13 Nov. 6 - Beat Putnam City 28-0 1st Round - Bye Week Quarterfinals - Beat Mustang 45-7 Semifinals - Lost To Jenks 39-15
Players To Watch [player_tooltip player_id="51037" first="Austin" last="Havens"] - 2023 Quarterback Look for Ram junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="51037" first="Austin" last="Havens"] to take the next step in 2021 after a solid breakout season in 2020. Havens, as mentioned above, will have one of the best supporting casts around him in terms of skill players. He’ll be the guy in charge of distributing the ball to all these weapons and based on that will allow him to put up some big numbers. However, with Owasso having five new starters along the offensive line, don’t be surprised to see Havens tuck the ball and run more in 2021 and don’t be surprised when you see that he also has legitimate wheels. [player_tooltip player_id="38674" first="Chris" last="McClellan"] - 2022 Defensive Lineman We mentioned that Owasso’s defensive line unit might be the absolute best group of guys in the state, regardless of class. Leading the group is All American [player_tooltip player_id="38674" first="Chris" last="McClellan"], who has terrorized Edison opponents the last few seasons. McClellan moved to Owasso this offseason and has been one of the busiest prospects in the state as his recruitment has blown up since the start of 2021. McClellan is traveling all over the country this summer looking at potential fits for the next level. However, when he lines up for Owasso, he’ll be a one man wrecking crew. [player_tooltip player_id="45651" first="Cole" last="Adams"] - 2023 Wide Receiver Owasso’s [player_tooltip player_id="45651" first="Cole" last="Adams"] has been starting and making plays since helping Owasso to a state title in 2019 as a freshman. We really enjoyed watching how creative the coaches got with utilizing Adams in a variety of ways in 2020. Expect more creativity from the coaching staff as Adams might be the most dynamic player in this Owasso offense. They’re going to find different ways to get him involved, from lining him up in different spots at receiver to helping in the run game or even in the return game. Adams is one of the best junior wide receivers in the state and we expect him to have a big year. [player_tooltip player_id="101403" first="Jake" last="Clifton"] - 2022 Linebacker Here’s a perfect example of why Owasso is the preseason number one team and the favorite to capture another state championship. The Rams have to replace two of the better linebackers in the state from last season in [player_tooltip player_id="38516" first="Emaud" last="Triplett"] and [player_tooltip player_id="45655" first="Brenden" last="Dye"]. Senior [player_tooltip player_id="101403" first="Jake" last="Clifton"] won’t be able to replace both linebackers but he will be able to make sure that the position doesn’t experience a drop off. Clifton has excellent size and has shown many times this offseason that he can absolutely run. Clifton is going to be a massive headache for opposing offenses, especially considering he’s going to be free to roam behind a stout defensive line. [player_tooltip player_id="61141" first="Kelan" last="Carney"] - 2022 Wide Receiver The term "underrated" gets thrown around a lot but you have to add it to the list of things to describe Owasso wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="61141" first="Kelan" last="Carney"]. The Owasso receiver is about to go into his fourth year as a starter in the Rams offense. Think about that fact alone. Carney will be a four-year starter in an Owasso offense that has been so explosive. He’s been one of Owasso’s most consistent pass catchers over the last several years and that won’t change in 2021. He has to be considered underrated when it comes to his recruitment alone because his production on the field speaks for itself. More Names [player_tooltip player_id="130378" first="Brandon" last="Ramsey Jr"]. - 2022 Defensive Back [player_tooltip player_id="38735" first="Derrick" last="Overstreet"] - 2022 Running Back [player_tooltip player_id="61140" first="Deshawn" last="Kinnard"] - 2022 Running Back [player_tooltip player_id="38786" first="Emery" last="Neeley"] - 2023 Running Back [player_tooltip player_id="61147" first="JaRay" last="Austin"] - 2022 Wide Receiver [player_tooltip player_id="61137" first="Korbyn" last="Green"] - 2022 Defensive Back [player_tooltip player_id="38563" first="Michael" last="Jamerson"] - 2022 Defensive Lineman [player_tooltip player_id="160660" first="Ronnie" last="Thomas"] - 2022 Wide Receiver [player_tooltip player_id="47158" first="Tyler" last="Rich"] - 2022 Defensive Lineman
Notable If you follow this website, there’s a good chance you’re a football fan overall and also enjoy college football. The transfer portal has absolutely taken over college football and this offseason we saw plenty of transfer movement in high school football as well. Owasso benefitted from it this offseason as they added some big time players, especially on the defensive side of the ball. We already mentioned the move of All American defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="38674" first="Chris" last="McClellan"] from Edison to the Rams. Also on defense you had cornerback [player_tooltip player_id="61137" first="Korbyn" last="Green"] going from Booker T Washington to Owasso. A pair of Skiatook standouts also made the move as quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="38821" first="Mason" last="Willingham"] and linebacker Braeden Foster will now suit up for Owasso. The transfers weren’t happening at just Owasso. As we mentioned, we saw many more players than the four players above that ended up switching schools and it happened on both sides of the state at all different levels. I bring it up because the transfer portal has been gaining momentum over the last few years and the belief has been that it would trickle down to high school football. I wasn’t a big believer before this last offseason but maybe I could be wrong and this becomes more of a norm.
2021 Schedule/Games To Watch Aug. 27 - AT Edmond Santa Fe - Owasso opens the season on the road in Edmond taking on Santa Fe. The Wolves are fresh off a trip to the state championship game and are hungry to make it back. This was a great measuring stick game last year for Owasso. We mentioned that coming into the season, the Rams had plenty of new faces but it didn't take long for them to establish themselves as serious contenders. They did that by absolutely routing Santa Fe in the 2020 season opener. The game was over by the end of the first quarter. That probably won't be the case in 2021 but if it is, 6A-D1 better take it as a serious warning shot. Sept. 3 - Fayetteville, AR. Sept. 10 - Broken Arrow - Who’s your daddy? Get ready for that chant from the Owasso student section. Broken Arrow hired Josh Blankenship this offseason. He's the son of Owasso head coach Bill Blankenship and obviously adds another thrilling dynamic to this rivalry. Owasso got the better of Broken Arrow last season but with Josh going into his first year with the Tigers, this could make for a very intriguing week two rivalry game. This game happens on the same day as Jenks-Union and the Jenks-Union match-up has always had the more eyeballs but momentum has grown for BA-Owasso over the last four years. Sept. 24 - AT Union - After a bye week in week three, Owasso opens up their district schedule on the road against another rival in Union. Owasso and Union are 1 and 2 in our preseason rankings and both play very tough non-district schedules. So it's not a guarantee that both teams will still be 1 and 2 when they meet up in the first week of district play in week four. However, these are our top two teams in the class and we believe they will end up squaring off twice this year. Once on September 24th, where the district crown will likely be decided. Then again in December with a state crown on the line. Oct. 1 - Norman North Oct. 8 - AT Edmond North Oct. 14 - Southmoore Oct. 22 - Mustang Oct. 28 - AT Moore Nov. 5 - AT Putnam City
Championship History 2 State Championships 2019 - Beat Jenks 14-6 2017 - Beat Union 21-14
