All of these guys have flashed some solid potential and project to take a big leap from the sophomore to junior seasons in terms of maturity and production. Take a look at my breakdown of the top 5 2023 Oregon QB’s:
Sam Leavitt Sam Leavitt 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB West Linn | 2023 State OR , 6’1″ 190lbs, Westview
Leavitt is ranked the #1 QB for the 2023 class in Oregon and his play backs it up 100%. He shows solid, coordinated footwork from under center, play action, and in the shotgun and does a great job getting significant depth with various dropbacks. He delivers with a quick, over the top release and displays excellent anticipation and timing. Leavitt can improvise and extend plays when he needs to but does a great job delivering accurate throws under pressure without getting rattled. He’s shown to hit receivers with good placement in stride and does a good job distinguishing whether to use velocity or touch. Leavitt shows his velocity on intermediate routes to hit receivers in those tight and closing windows. He can make plays on his feet if he needs to, and holds an offer from Florida State.
Ryan Oliver Ryan Oliver 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Lakeridge | 2023 State OR , 6’1″ 180lbs, Lakeridge
Oliver has shown good pocket mobility to avoid the pass rush and delivers accurate throws with good shoulder flexibility. He did an outstanding job getting the ball out quick when he needed to and not trying to force anything, showing excellent ball security. He flashed the ability to fit throws in with velocity and possesses solid arm strength all-around. His best ball he throws in my opinion are outside fades to the X/Z where he displays excellent placement when he uses touch, frequently dropping dimes for his receivers. He throws well out of play action and has shown the ability to extend plays and throw off-platform when needed as well. I would like to see him improve his poise and demeanor and look a bit more collected in the pocket, which should come with maturity and experience.
Jack Wagner Jack Wagner 6'4" | 185 lbs | QB Tualatin | 2023 State OR , 6’4″ 180lbs, Tualatin
Wagner sizes up with a tall, slender build with good length and much room to grow into his frame. He is utilized as a dual-threat QB and is a strong improviser when the pocket collapses, never hesitating to tuck it and go. As a passer, Wagner is poised and collected in the pocket and delivers with a smooth release. He has good arm strength and has shown glimpses of throwing with velocity. He also saw some reps on defense during his sophomore season, and is a talented all-around athlete. Expect a big leap in production from Wagner this upcoming season.
Brock Thomas Brock Thomas 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB Sheldon | 2023 State OR , 6’0″ 175lbs, Sheldon
Thomas shows excellent command behind center with a strong demeanor to move the ball. He reads and understands coverages well by identifying the soft spot with his pre-snap read. He possesses solid footwork and delivers with a quick release. Sheldon ran a ton of play action where he looked very comfortable, and throws well off play action while also selling the mesh point. Thomas seems to have a good self clock and gets the ball out to his receivers with good timing and placement. I really like his ability to adjust and throw with different arm angles in certain situations. He is underrated on his feet, as he shows good short area quickness and COD to pick up solid chunks of yards. He could potentially have a breakout junior campaign for Sheldon.
Hogan Carmichael Hogan Carmichael 6'5" | 190 lbs | QB Summit | 2023 State OR , 6’5″ 180lbs, Summit
Carmichael sizes up with a good frame and length with room to put on size, similar to Jack Wagner Jack Wagner 6'4" | 185 lbs | QB Tualatin | 2023 State OR . He stands tall in the pocket and delivers with a fluid release. He was constantly forced out of the pocket last season, and he did a good job extending plays and throwing on the run in both directions to turn busted plays into first downs or solid chunks of yards. Good communicator as he shows around the 2:50 mark on film to identify the “mike”. He showed improvements of being able to step up or slide in the pocket to find receivers rather than scrambling too early. He’s a big arm kid with strong potential going forward as he continues to develop.
