These players are in no particular order for which they are mentioned, just a list of players I’m excited to see play ball in the 2021 season. These athletes are ones who stood out to me on film or I was able to catch a game of theirs in person and had a really good night. Here are your 2023 Wildcards.
RB/LB- Maddox May Maddox May LB Aberdeen Roncalli | 2023 State – Aberdeen Roncalli
Watching May’s film showed me that he’s one of the better one-cut backs. He is shifty but not flashy, makes one good move, then gets moving North-and-South. He has tons of speed to break away from the pack when given the ball. He’s not afraid of contact either, he’ll lower his shoulder and drop a defender, given the opportunity.
ATH- Riley Rothschadl– Bon Homme
I really liked watching Rothschadl’s film. His big-play ability is something else when you remember how young he is. He has a lot of raw talent and a very high ceiling when it comes to his potential. He throws a good deep ball with pretty good accuracy. His legs is the big seller here, he has all kinds of speed and good vision in the open field. His versatility puts him in various positions, as a QB, WR, DB, KR and PR.
OL/DL- Jason Maciejczak– Douglas
Maciejczak is about to be a breakout star in SD, this athlete is an animal. His 6’4″, 295 lb. frame is already intimidating, then you see him move and it’s nerve-wracking. He is the Douglas Patriot playmaker on both sides of the ball, FB, OL, LB, DE and he even has a highlight of him throwing the ball. I honestly did not see any weakness in his film, he’s strong, nimble, and can block like none other very ferocious when finishing blocks as well. I highly recommend watching his film.
QB/DB- Ryan Krog Ryan Krog QB Elkton-Lake Benton | 2023 State – Elkton/Lake Benton
Krog was a kid that caught my eye just solely based on how calm he was taking snaps. The game I watched, he was under a lot of pressure from the defense, but he kept his cool and made plays on the run, or made good, quick decisions. He keeps his eyes down field and makes really good decisions whether to pass or run, making the best play for him and the team. He has good touch on the ball, but can also zing one into a tight window. He has plenty of speed and a good deal of agility to make plays.
OL/DL- Charlie Prien Charlie Prien 6'2" | 240 lbs | OL Mount Vernon-Plankiton | 2023 State – Mount Vernon/Plankiton
Prien is one of those good kid players that I like to watch. He seems a little smaller than the guy he lines up against on film, but his fundamentals make him a lot better than his opponent. He keeps his low center of gravity and drives through his defender to finish his pancake. Defensively, he does the same, gets himself good leverage on the blocker to make it and easy shed to go chase the ballcarrier, and makes the tackle. He has some of the best hand technique I’ve seen.
