JJ is having a terrific off-season. First, he won Positional MVP at Under Armor Ohio and now he’s received an offer to Iowa State. This is a player with a massive frame at 6’6’ and 225 pounds, giving him a boost as a Division One talent right off the bat. His father is Jamie Kohl, founder of the biggest special team camps in America and kicking coach for the Chicago Bears. JJ’s parents both attended Iowa State, so there are also family ties to this university.
How did JJ do this past season? Well, his team struggled. They went 2-6 and lost big in many games against high-level opponents like Southeast Polk and Ankeny. Despite that, JJ showed great promise, making tons of plays with his strong arm. His first playoff game was his best game of the season, throwing for 204 Passing Yards. He had 2 Passing Touchdowns, 2 Rushing Touchdowns, and an NFL QBR of 158.33. After his sophomore campaign at Ankeny Centennial, JJ transferred to crosstown rival Ankeny High School. This was a smart decision because Ankeny runs a modern offense modeling a spread system while Ankeny Centennial utilized a run-first triple-option scheme that did not fit JJ’s play style.
How does JJ fit into Iowa State’s offense? I personally think he is exactly what Matt Campbell and his staff want in a QB. JJ is sneaky quick. While his main talent is his arm, he definitely doesn’t lack the ability to get out of the pocket with consistency. I can’t say he’s a dual-threat QB the likes of Brock Purdy, but I’m also sure that’s not a big problem. Overall, this is a great fit! I would not be surprised if Iowa State is one of JJ’s top schools toward the end of his recruitment.
