Continue ReadingWhen I planned our coverage for this camp, I didn’t anticipate covering many 2021 recruits, being so late into the cycle, but with COVID disrupting schedules last fall and this spring, a surprising amount of 2021 recruits, man graduating in the next ten days, showed up as UVA-Wise rolled into Norfolk for a prospect camp.
Hampton QB Teddy Watson
Watson, along with some of the other kids on this list, is still searching for his first offer but at one time had some interest from Norfolk State and James Madison. Watson was the second-best QB from Va, and third overall in my opinion at the camp. Watson is accurate enough and has some athleticism that will serve him well. Watson was coached by legendary Crabbers coach Mike Smith so he has learned from one of the best
Portsmouth Christian RB Bubba Thomas
I covered six of Thomas’s games last season and one in his junior year. In that junior year, Thomas ran for 1,910 yards. With multiple 200+ yard games over his high school career, Thomas didn’t get as many offers as he maybe should have due to his height. Thomas does have offers from Central State, Allen, West Virginia Wesleyan, and PWO offers from Bluefield State, and Elizabeth City State. Thomas ran for 1,000+ yards in just seven games last season.
Granby (Norfolk) WR Marcellus Roscoe
Roscoe is a true athlete. Speed, great hands, and good footwork to go with solid route running. Roscoe may have been overlooked after playing at Granby, a program that didn’t win as much as some other schools in the area and has no offers yet. Any D-2 or FCS program looking for a kid to come in and return punts while perfecting playing at wide receiver. A year of prep or JUCO might be a good option for Roscoe if he doesn’t get anything here soon.
Oscar Smith (Chesapeake) ATH Tyvon Norfleet
Norfleet is a newly-minted state champion but is still searching for a home at the next level. I think Norfleet will play DB in college although he played almost everywhere at Oscar Smith. Norfleet is quick and has a lot to offer to a program but this late in the cycle, I think most FBS and FCS programs for that matter are done and he may have to settle for D-2, D-3, or NAIA to continue his football journey. That being said, Norfleet does have offers from Long Island and was offered by Virginia Tech in 2019, that offer still stands according to Norfleet.
Norview (Norfolk) WR Joshua Johnson
Johnson is a solid wide out with good hands and route-running skills and might not have gotten enough chances to show that in high school. Until recently, Johnson was committed to Christopher Newport be has re-opened his recruiting late in the cycle. If asked, Johnson could switch to DB as he played all over in high school. Johnson could pledge to CNU again but did also attend a camp from Emory and Henry recently.
The 2021 cycle was very unique, but opportunities are still out there for those recruits, but they are going fast.
