A new era of Adair football began in 2023 but it had a familiar face and name. Former Adair star quarterback Brady Bradbury entered his first season as head coach of the Warriors. He had the majority of their starters back from the 2022 season but it was also an opportunity for a fresh start after a 2-8 campaign in 2022. The growing pains that Adair's young players went through in 2022 would help them in 2023 but it wasn't immediate. The Warriors would actually start the season with an 0-3 record in non-district play. But they would turn things around and actually go unbeaten in district play. And that featured several close games that went down to the wire. They beat Claremore Sequoyah, Rejoice Christian and Pawhuska by a combined ten points and those close victories would put them in position to go from 0-3 after non-district play to capturing the district championship. It was a complete turnaround for the Warriors and they went into the playoffs with some momentum and some hunger after missing the postseason in 2022. Adair would beat Sperry in the first round and then ran into another perennial power in the second round when Vian came to town. The Wolverines would end Adair's season in the second round but there are multiple reasons to be very optimistic as we start looking ahead to the 2024 season.

2024 OUTLOOK

The Warriors come into the 2024 season as the #3 team in our preseason Class 2A-2 rankings. And Class 2A-2 is the first reason to be optimistic about this season. Classes 2A, A and B have been split into two divisions and the Warriors find themselves in the smaller division of Class 2A. The potential path to competing for a state championship is not near as daunting as it has been over the last six seasons. The Warriors also bring back almost everyone from last year's team. They bring back nine starters on an offense that averaged nearly 40 points per game. The entire offensive line returns and several of the skill positions are back. They will have a new quarterback and will need new names to step into larger roles in the running game, but this is an experienced unit overall. On defense, they have eight starters returning and the hope is that the experience will help the Warriors improve on that side of the ball from the 2023 campaign. And finally, this is a very experienced team overall that has gone through the fire and the growing pains and are ready to win. They went through the miserable 2-8 season of 2022 and then a tough 0-3 start last season. But they are coming off a district championship and they are hoping to carry that momentum into this season. While the split in Class 2A will benefit Adair, it also makes their district very competitive. Three of the top five teams in our 2A-2 rankings (including Adair) are in this district. So if the Warriors can navigate their way through a tough district slate, they'll be ready to make a run when November rolls around.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1328091' first='Cooper' last='McCord'] appears to be the next guy in line at quarterback for the Warriors this fall. As we mentioned earlier in the preview, whoever the quarterback ends up being is going to have plenty of talent around him. And we saw flashes of what McCord can do at the quarterback position in 2023. When he came into the game on offense, he was a boost to the offensive side of the ball. He was third on the team in rushing touchdowns. But don't overlook where McCord shined brightest last fall. He was one of their leading tacklers in 2023. He also led the team in tackles for loss from the linebacker position. McCord could very well be Adair's most important two-way player in 2024.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that the Warriors would need a new name to step up in the running game. The Warriors had two players combine for 28 touchdowns on the ground and both graduated. Look for senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1328093' first='Kaden' last='Boucher'] to step into a larger role this season and with that, his production should go up. The Adair senior was third on the team in carries last season and was productive as a running back when he had opportunities. Those opportunities should expand in a major way this season. And it also won't be surprising to see more players also step into larger roles at the running back position so Boucher isn't a one-man band.

The Adair defense does bring back the majority of their starters and production from last year's team and they are hoping that the experience will allow them to improve in a major way. Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1328094' first='Luke' last='Wilson'] will be one of the leaders on Adair's defense this fall. He led the team in tackles a year ago with nearly 100 tackles on the season. Don't be surprised if he ends up going over the century mark and ends his senior season with over 100 tackles this season. He was also great in 2023 about getting into the backfield and causing problems for opposing offenses. He was tied for second on the team with ten tackles for loss during his junior season.

Adair junior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1328092' first='Ryan' last='Wilson'] is one of the players we're excited to see the most for the Warriors this season. He had a breakout sophomore season in 2023, emerging as the team's leading receiver. He was without a doubt the top guy in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. And the reason for so much excitement around Wilson is the way he finished the 2023 season. Almost all of his production came in the second half of the season. He had four straight games where he had 100+ yards. And with Adair working in a new quarterback, look for Wilson and his playmaking ability to make that transition a lot easier this fall.

Aug. 30th - Jay
Sept. 6th - Inola
Sept. 13th - AT Locust Grove
- Adair will wrap up non-district play on the road in week two against rival Locust Grove. The Warriors are looking to turn things around in this series after losing the last two, including a 60-46 loss in their meeting a year ago. It was a high-scoring affair in 2023 and it could end up being that again in 2024. The Pirates have one of the better quarterbacks in the state's 2026 class and they have a very experienced team returning to complement that QB. This is a big momentum game for Adair.
Sept. 27th - AT Salina
Oct. 4th - Chelsea
Oct. 11th - AT Kansas
- The second half of the regular season kicks off on the road against a Kansas team that is number four in our preseason rankings. This is their first meeting since being district opponents from 2018-2021. And the Warriors have owned this series in recent memory. Adair has won 12 straight games with the last loss to the Comets coming in 2006. But Kansas will be ready for the Warriors in this one. They feature an outstanding senior quarterback and are one of the main contenders in this class.
Oct. 17th - Colcord
- One week after facing #4 Kansas on the road, Adair returns home on a short week to face #5 Colcord. After this two week stretch, we could have a very good idea of who is going to come out of this district with the title. It also wouldn't be surprising to see these teams beat each other up and still have work to do in the final few weeks. Colcord will have a very strong defense this fall. The hope will be that Adair's new offensive standouts will be veterans by the time this week seven match-up rolls around.
Oct. 25th - Keys
Nov. 1st - AT Wyandotte
Nov. 8th - AT Commerce

NOTABLE

Earlier in the preview, we mentioned how the 2023 season was a turnaround year for Adair football. But when you really look at the 2023 campaign, it was the ultimate turnaround season for this program. Adair had gone 2-8 and missed out on the playoffs in 2022. And it looked like they were on their way to another losing season in 2023 when they began the year with an 0-3 record. But the Warriors would rally after that, winning seven straight games to capture the district championship. We see similar in-season turnarounds every year but going from 0-3 to 7-3 and district champion is somewhat rare. And when you combine that fact with how the Warriors went 2-8 the year before, you get something that just doesn't happen very often. Now, the Warriors have all the momentum in the world going into the 2024 season and they are hoping to carry that momentum to making a deep run in the playoffs.
