These athletes are straight up talented, and it is impressive to see this type of skill at such a young age. All the the players listed have positive upside and the sky is the limit for every one of them. The list below are just a few of MANY in the area who stood out on film this past season. I expect to put many more names on this list going into next season, but as of now, this is only the beginning.
Elijah Fields – Spring
Fields is a promising prospect and a player who will only continue to make noise throughout his high school career. Fields is a physical backer who moves very well at his size. He shows great versatility with the ability to rush off of the edge as a pass rusher, or manning down the middle of the filed as an inside backer. Fields sticks his nose into running lanes, usually ending a play before it can cross the line of scrimmage. Fields shows a very good motor, always in pursuit of the ball carrier. Has the speed to keep up with backs out of the backfield and wraps up with little chance of escaping his grasp. The future is very bright for this young man and I look forward to continue covering his career. “The Hulk” will have programs attention very soon.
Dylan Rogers – Cypress Woods
I have talked about Rogers before, and I will continue to do so. Rogers plays at one speed and one speed only. Fast. If he makes a mistake he is doing it at 100% which you have to love. Rogers is another physical linebacker who is not afraid of contact. He will take on an offensive lineman, shed the block, and make the tackle in the backfield. Rogers shows very good lateral quickness with his long strides and can run sideline to sideline. Rogers has recently picked up an offer from Ole Miss and believe me when I say that is only the beginning for this talented young man. It does not take players with his skill long before they begin to pop and his time is approaching. Keep your eyes on his growth as a player and how many other programs take notice.
Jameer Martin – Atascocita
Martin shows incredible pursuit at the linebacker position. His quickness and speed catches your eye when watching him. Martin has good awareness, locating the open lanes and quickly meeting the ball carrier before momentum is gained. As a blitzer, Martin is top tier. He rushes with a purpose and refuses to be blocked. He has this relentless pursuit that just does not let up. Martin plays the game with great physicality and agility. His junior year will be one to watch in order to see what he has worked on and to see how much better he has become. Martin has a promising future ahead of him.
Alexander Kilgore – Paetow
Kilgore has great size for an inside backer and shows fantastic effort. Kilgore is quick to diagnose plays and uses his speed to stop them in a hurry. He has an excellent burst especially going through the line of scrimmage, and can keep up with any back coming out if the backfield. Kilgore has excellent sideline to sideline speed and is a true disruptor when coming downhill. Kilgore has tremendous upside and the potential is incredibly high for him. His skills will soon draw in much attention going into next season.
Donavon Carter – Cypress Lakes
Carter is a great edge defender who plays his role very well. He understands his responsibilities as a contain player and allows very little outside of his range. With his long strides, Carter can chase down the plays sideline to sideline. He uses his quickness to get around bigger tackles on rushes and utilizes an impressive dip and rip move. Carter has a good frame that weight can be added to in order to make him more of a threat. He is a long athlete with tremendous upside and Carter is a player who will continue to develop into a very good player.
Christian Brathwaite – Cypress Ranch
Brathwaite is an active and versatile linebacker. He can play as an inside or outside backer and can make plays wherever he is lined up. In coverage, Brathwaite looks comfortable with the ability to cover anybody, and in the run game is a force. He can set the edge on the outside and recognize run lanes and fill them. Brathwaite has speed and strength, and has an incredible motor. He is always in the frame of a play which is a beautiful thing to see for a player of his caliber. Brathwaite has the skill and potential to be at the top of his class. He currently holds an offer from Baylor, with many more on the way for this young man. He will be a major part on a stacked defense for the years to come.
Honorable Mentioned
Cameron Burkes – Kingwood
Jaden Ducos – Atascocita
Josh Pelfrey – Kingwood
