Get 25% off your subscription by entering Knight25 in the coupon code area. Enjoy!

In the very first game of the 2023 football season, Edmond Santa Fe made it very clear to Class 6A-1 that 2022 was in the past. The Wolves had to suffer through a 1-9 season a year ago and the lone win would not come until the final week of the regular season. Fast forward to this week and you have an Edmond Santa Fe team that is ranked #4 in the latest 6A-1 rankings and they are 5-1 on the season. But more importantly, they are perfect in district play. And on Thursday night, they host #2 Union in a game that could certainly end up deciding the district championship.

Santa Fe still controls their own destiny within the district and after close calls against Mustang and Norman in the last two weeks, the Wolves will be hungrier than ever when Union comes into town on Thursday night. Back in week zero, the Wolves sent shockwaves across the state by going on the road and beating Jenks. The announcement was loud and clear that the Wolves were for real in 2023. The only blemish on the record is a week two loss to Norman North by a field goal. They had their week one game with Choctaw get cancelled following the tragic shooting at Choctaw the previous week.

The Wolves opened up district play with back to back wins over city rivals Edmond Memorial and Edmond North. They were dominant in both as the running game emerged as one of the best in the state. More on that later. Two weeks ago, they found themselves in a high-scoring affair with Mustang. They would survive with a 56-49 win but that was a Mustang team that would simply not go away despite being down big a few times. Last week, they would survive an upset scare from Norman, putting up 50+ points again to avoid the loss on the road.

This week, the focus shifts to a Union team that is not at full strength coming into the showdown. They are without their starting quarterback and they will be starting a freshman in his place. Despite missing their QB1, the Redhawks had no problems running away from Mustang last week at home. They leaned on the running game and didn't ask much from their young quarterback. Although, he made throws when he needed to and had a few that caught our eye.

But Union's quarterback situation is not the most intriguing question ahead of Thursday's game. Santa Fe's star running back (again, more on him in a bit) has been averaging over 300 yards per game since district play began. If he continues his hot streak, Santa Fe will be in good shape. When Mustang had success against Union last week, it was with the ground game. That's certainly going to be something to watch heading into this week. Below, we take a look at four players for the Wolves that will certainly have our attention in this top five showdown in Class 6A-1. These aren't the only players to watch on Thursday night but these are guys that will certainly have an impact in the outcome of the game.

EDMOND SANTA FE PLAYERS TO WATCH
