But this season the Bobcats are purring loudly.
Running an old-school ‘Wing T’ run-dominated offense, McCurdy began Week 7 of the New Mexico High School football season ranked No. 7 in Class 2A by MaxPreps and No. 9 in the Coaches poll with a 4-1 mark.
Saturday, the Bobcats proved the pollsters right with an impressive 26-7 victory over previously unbeaten Cuba at McCurdy Bobcats Field, scoring on four long touchdown runs and keeping the Cuba offense off the scoreboard as the Rams’ only points came on a first-quarter Pick-6.
McCurdy has won five straight games after opening the season with a loss to Hope Christian.
Dynamic junior QB/RB Jermiah Roybal Jermiah Roybal QB McCurdy | 2025 State NM scored two TDs on runs of 43 and 71 in the second quarter to give the Bobcats a 14-7 halftime lead as McCurdy overcame two early turnovers. Cuba drove into the red zone in the final minutes of the first half but came away empty when intentional grounding call pushed the Rams back.
Roybal took over the No. 1 ball carrying duties for McCurdy after leading rusher Lucas Martinez Lucas Martinez RB McCurdy | 2024 State NM (844 rushing yards in 1st four games) exited the game with an apparent lower leg injury.
McCurdy sophomore backup RB Marius Sanchez gave the Bobcats a two-score lead with a 36-yard TD run late in the third quarter to make it 20-7. Roybal sealed the deal with his third long TD run of the afternoon with 2:36 left on the first snap after the McCurdy defense stopped Cuba on downs.
McCurdy faces a huge test in Week 8 when they travel to face No. 2 Santa Rosa on the Lions’ home turf. After a bye, Cuba (6-1) goes to Thoreau for the Rams’ district opener on Oct. 12.

LA CUEVA-ELDORADO: Friday night at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque, La Cueva jumped out to a 21-0 lead less than 6 minutes into the game and crushed rival Eldorado, 74-20, in the district opener for both teams.. With Eldorado’s secondary unable to keep pace with La Cueva’s fleet of speedy receivers, the Bears added 41 points in the final 18 minutes of the first half for a staggering 62-20 halftime lead.
The second half was played entirely with a running clock, which limited the scoring. La Cueva QB Cameron Dyer Cameron Dyer 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB La Cueva | 2025 State NM accounted for 9 TD – 6 passing and 3 rushing – and threw for 373 yards to ignite the Bears’ explosive offense. WR Tanner Montano Tanner Montano 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR La Cueva | 2026 State NM , one of the state’s fastest players, caught 3 TD passes for La Cueva, including a 42-yard connection from Dyer down the middle of the field as time expired in the first half. La Cueva improved to 4-3 overall and has district games remaining against Farmington, Sandia and West Mesa.
