IA Class 2A Recap From Week 3 2026

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Class 2A Iowa had perhaps the toughest week of any conference within the state through week 3. With the last round of out-of-conference games taking place, several 2A teams faltered against teams at both higher and lower-level competition, and through that, may shake up the outlook of how things will play out in the 2A conference even more as we go forward into the next phase of this season. We recap the top games and standouts from Class 2A Iowa as we recap week 3 of the 2026 high school football season across Iowa!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Top Games:</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Mid-Prairie </strong>vs. Sigourney Keota: <strong>49-41</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li>A high scoring shootout between these two foes, neither offense was really able to stay off the field for too long to catch their breath because points were scored at such a fast pace. A total of 913 yards of offense combined between the two set an unprecedented pace, though ultimately, the Golden Hawks showcased the more balanced unit that was able to keep ahead slightly of the Cobras. The Cobras scored late in the 4th quarter following a successful onside kick recovery to cut the deficit to one possession, but their next onside kick attempt failed, allowing the Golden Hawks to run the clock out, winning another high scoring battle as they have tended to find themselves in these quite a bit already this season. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li><strong>Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='1896856' first='Brooks' last='Weber'] (SR) - </strong>Weber completely gashed the Cobras' secondary with one of the best passing performances by any QB this week across Iowa. Weber finished 17 of 23 for 398 yards and 5 TDs while rushing for 11 yards on 3 carries. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Vinton-Shellsburg </strong>vs. Benton: <strong>21-14</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li>Benton has been on a serious slump this season, but they had high hopes entering Friday night against the Vikings as they came in riding a 10 game winning streak over Vinton-Shellsburg, and playing at home, it seemed that this would be a piece of cake. However, after leading 14-7 through 3 quarters, the Bobcats had a meltdown in the 4th quarter as the Vikings finally began chipping apart the Bobcats' defense with several big plays on offense while Benton threw 2 costly interceptions that changed the outcome of the game. Vinton-Shellsburg scored 14 unanswered over the final 12 minutes to snap the losing streak in a historic road upset. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li><strong>Top Performer: Isaiah Schneider (SR) - </strong>While it wasn't particularly outstanding, Schneider's performance was effective in combating the Bobcats' troubled defense. Schneider ran for 94 yards on 17 carries (5.5 YPC) and a rushing TD. He also punted 5 times, averaging 34.8 yards per punt. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Crestwood</strong> vs. Independence: <strong>25-20</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li>A close rivalry between these two over the last few years, but Independence rode into this game on a 5 game winning streak over the Cadets. Crestwood was determined to change that, and they were able to do just that as they clawed through a hard-fought battle. While the Mustangs outpaced the Cadets in total yardage (339-247), they made more mistakes, with 2 costly turnovers, including a fumble return for a TD completely changing the outcome of the game. Scoring ceased following the 3rd quarter on both sides, and it was the defense that ultimately stepped up and secured the win for the Cadets as they now move up to 3-0. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li><strong>Top Performer: Alex Loden (SR) - </strong>Loden picked apart the Mustangs' defense with near perfect precision both with his arm and his legs. Loden finished 10 of 12 for 135 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for a team-high 73 yards on 15 carries (4.9 YPC). He also punted twice, averaging 44 yards per punt. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>Tipton</strong> vs. Maquoketa: <strong>27-20</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li>After losing their first 2 games of the season by wide margins, the Cardinals entered a pivotal matchup at home against Tipton, who got crushed last week by West Liberty. The game started close, with the score tied at 7-7 through halftime. However, the Tigers emerged ahead in the second half, thanks in part to a dominant rushing offense which finished with 391 yards (8.5 YPC) and 3 TDs on the ground while Maquoketa was limited to a mere 129 yards of total offense. Tipton emerged victorious as they move ahead to 2-1, already surpassing the win total they achieved last season. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li><strong>Top Performer: Jackson Timmerman (SR) - </strong>Leading the way for the ferocious rushing attack, Timmerman almost single-handedly defeated the Cardinals' defense with his legs, rushing for 248 yards on just 19 carries (13.1 YPC) and a TD. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size">West Marshall vs. <strong>Roland-Story: 28-3</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li>One of the most anticipated games of the week was this rivalry matchup, and the expectation was for the game to end up in a potential high-scoring affair, but instead, it was a completely one-sided showcase for the home team. After the Trojans took the lead with a field goal in the 1st quarter, the Norsemen were in complete control for the remainder of the game. The Norsemen limited the Trojans to less than 200 yards of total offense, forcing them to abandon the run, which resulted in 3 picks by the secondary, while the Norsemen' offense pushed ahead with 308 yards of offense in a well-balanced showcase. The win for Roland-Story proves to be significant, ending a 7 game losing streak to West Marshall, and further signals Roland-Story's rise in the 2A conference. </li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ul> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:list --> <ul class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li><strong>Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='1197450' first='Fiston' last='Carlson'] (SR) - </strong>Carlson accounted for nearly all of Roland-Story's rushing total on Friday night, finishing with 110 rushing yards on 18 carries (6.1 YPC) and 2 rushing TDs while adding a 4 yard reception.
