We're breaking down some of the best games on the schedule, taking a closer look at the key matchups, players to watch, and what each result could mean moving forward. These are the games that have our attention heading into another big Friday night.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>HUNTINGTON VS SPRING VALLEY</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>The Game:</strong> This battle of area rivals heads to Marshall's Joan C. Edwards Stadium for the Battle of the Joan between two proud programs. Huntington is coming off a bye week after falling to George Rogers Clark (KY) in Week 1, while Spring Valley picked up a big win over Parkersburg to get back in the win column. The Timberwolves will be playing up a class in this one and will want to avenge last year's 38-7 defeat to the Highlanders. With both teams looking to establish some momentum early in the season, this should be a big-time MSAC matchup.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Keys to the Game:</strong> This is a matchup between two contrasting styles, with Spring Valley bringing its Wing-T attack while Huntington will look to spread the field and create space. Despite the different approaches, the running game could ultimately decide this one, especially with both teams relying on young players in key spots. Huntington has had an extra week to prepare for the Timberwolves' system, giving the Highlanders more time to figure out how to defend it, while Spring Valley got some much-needed game experience last week with a fresh group of players stepping up. Playing in a large stadium like Joan C. Edwards also adds another layer of intrigue for two young rosters and how they handle the atmosphere and setting.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Matchup to Watch:</strong> Youth is the name of the game in this one, and whichever team handles that inexperience better could come away with the win. BYRD</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>The Game:</strong> Both teams enter this matchup undefeated and looking for a resume-building win in the AAA playoff standings. Keyser hasn't really been tested yet after two lopsided victories, while RCB is coming off a huge emotional and weather-delayed win over Fairmont Senior. These look like two evenly matched teams on paper, and they also have a common opponent in Lewis County to compare after both came away with similar wins. Last year, Keyser came away with the 42-20 win, but Robert C. Byrd looks inspired early on and will want to flip the script. This has the makings of one of the best games on the Week 3 schedule and should be a fun one to watch.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Keys to the Game:</strong> Both teams will look to establish the run, with Keyser bringing its Wing-T offense and RCB leaning heavily on dual-threat QB Isaiah Heflin. There's plenty of dynamic athleticism on both sides, with Keyser's QB Addison Brafford and RB Dominick Crawford matching up with Heflin and ATH Junior Smith for the Eagles. Defenses will have to come up with some big stops in what could turn into an offensive fireworks show, and this game could ultimately come down to which team has the ball last.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Matchup to Watch:</strong> Any time you face a Wing-T or similar offense, you have to be well prepared defensively, and that'll be the case for RCB this week. The Eagles have some youth up front that could put pressure on their linebackers and secondary to stay disciplined, fill their gaps, and be in the right position to make stops. Keyser QB Addison Brafford is also a threat to throw, so RCB's secondary can't afford to get lulled to sleep. On the other side, Keyser will have its hands full trying to limit Isaiah Heflin and Junior Smith, because completely shutting down those two isn't likely. Both teams can grind out yards on the ground, but there's also plenty of big-play potential with athletes on both sides.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Score Prediction:</strong> Robert C. Byrd 35 Keyser 28</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>ROANE COUNTY AT CLAY COUNTY</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>The Game:</strong> These two teams split their matchups last season, with Roane County picking up a convincing win early in the year before Clay County flipped the script with a big playoff victory. Both teams enter Week 3 at 2-0, giving this matchup some added importance with future playoff seeding on the line. There's a lot of familiarity between these programs, and this could turn into a back-and-forth game with plenty of offensive success on both sides. It should be a fun early-season test between two undefeated teams.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Keys to the Game:</strong> Clay County has to match Roane County's physicality if the Panthers want to come out on top in this one. Staying disciplined will be crucial against the Raiders' Wing-T attack, especially with Roane County having a lot of physicality up front on both sides of the ball. The Panthers know how to win this matchup and have the experience of preparing for Roane County's system twice last year, which should be an added benefit. On the other side, Roane County will have to hold up in the secondary against a Clay County passing attack that can be explosive and high tempo and capable of putting points on the board quickly. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Matchup to Watch:</strong> The trenches are where you'll want to keep your eyes in this matchup, with both teams facing important challenges up front. Roane County's offensive line has to open running lanes for the backs in the Raiders' Wing-T, but QB Brennen Carpenter can also stretch the defense with his arm if they start loading the box or key too much on their backs. On the other side, Clay County QB Cooper Collins will need to stay upright and get the ball out quickly to his receivers against a good Roane County front. The Panthers' offensive and defensive lines will have to elevate their play this week, but the rebuilt groups have done a good job through the first two weeks and will get another big test here.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Score Prediction:</strong> Roane County 35 Clay County 27</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>TUG VALLEY AT LOGAN</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>The Game:</strong> This is a good Southern WV matchup between two teams that know each other well, with Logan winning last year's meeting 27-12. The Wildcats have overwhelmed their first two opponents this season, but they'll get a much tougher test from Tug Valley this week. The Panthers are getting more comfortable each week under a new head coach and are a smaller program with plenty of experienced and talented athletes. Logan will be favored, but Tug Valley has enough playmakers to make the Wildcats work for a 3-0 start.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Keys to the Game:</strong> Logan has a plethora of athletes and plenty of size, which could spell trouble for a smaller program like Tug Valley. The Panthers have several multi-year starters with a lot of experience under their belts, and they'll need those players at their best if they want to pull off the upset. Logan will have the advantage in size and depth, but Tug Valley has the big-play threats to keep pressure on the Wildcats. If the Panthers can stay within striking distance, their experience and playmakers could help keep this one competitive into the second half.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Matchup to Watch:</strong> Both programs bring productive quarterbacks to this matchup in Logan's Greg Williams and Tug Valley's Preston May. Both are dual-threats who can keep defenses honest with their legs, while also having talented skill athletes around them capable of explosive plays on any given touch. If this game is still close heading into the fourth quarter, Logan could lean on its size and look to finish the game on the ground.
