Deer Creek Bye Week Report

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Seven of the top ten teams in Class 6A-1 have this week off after playing the last three weeks. Meaning it's good time to take an early look at a few of the teams that have gotten out to strong starts. Deer Creek came into this season as a borderline top ten team in Class 6A-1. Now the Antlers sit at 3-0 with impressive wins over Sand Springs, Edmond North and Edmond Memorial. Already matching last year's win title where they went 3-8 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>With three wins under their belt, the schedule sets up for the Antlers to make plenty of noise when district play begins. They will continue to be challenged early on; facing Yukon and Moore in the first two district games. Both of those teams are also off to 3-0 starts. And both of those teams are in the same boat as Deer Creek. A month ago, not many would predict that all three of these teams would be sitting here at 3-0. The Antlers beat Edmond Memorial. Moore beat Choctaw and Yukon stunned rival Mustang. We'll learn more about the Antlers in those first few games before a week six home clash against Jenks.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Two years ago, the Antlers went 8-4 and made it to the quarterfinals in their first season competing against 6A-1 competition. Last season was obviously a step back after losing a special senior class. But this Deer Creek team certainly looks more like a team that can make it to the quarterfinals and possibly threaten the top teams for a spot in the semifinals. If they stay healthy, this is a team that can continue to pick up momentum throughout the rest of the regular season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Below, we take a look at six players that have stood out to us in one way or another in the first few weeks. All six were on the PRZ-Oklahoma radar prior to the season and some have lived up to expectations and others have even exceeded them early on this fall. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1839096' first='Brayden' last='Hubbard'] - 2029 Running Back</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>2029 running back [player_tooltip player_id='1839096' first='Brayden' last='Hubbard'] has been an instant impact player for the Antlers so far this season. Talking with some of our other PRZ-Oklahoma writers, Hubbard is a player that had some hype coming into last year as just a freshman. But that season was cut short due to injury. This year, he's already made up for lost time. He missed the season opener against Sand Springs but returned with a vengeance in week one against Edmond North. Hubbard finished with over 150 yards and a touchdown in the win. He followed that up by finishing with over 100 yards of total offense and what ended up being the game-winning touchdown last week.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='523223' first='Gage' last='Gibbons'] - 2027 Wide Receiver</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='523223' first='Gage' last='Gibbons'] was firmly on the radar coming into this season. He's been considered one of the state's better wide receiver prospects in the 2027 class for a while now. Factor in his track speed and it's no surprise that he's gotten off to a fast start this season. Gibbons is the second leading receiver for the Antlers so far, totaling nearly 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns this fall. He's certainly been a focus of opponents trying to limit the impact that he's had and despite that, he's still produced. As the season moves forward, we see his overall impact continuing to improve.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>J [player_tooltip player_id='1828592' first='Dax' last='Chancey'] - 2028 Quarterback</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Junior quarterback J [player_tooltip player_id='1828592' first='Dax' last='Chancey'] looks completely different in September 2026 compared to September 2025. The junior season for a quarterback is usually a big year of growth and it's certainly looked like that for Chancey so far. He's thrown for over 550 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions, while completing 71% of his passes. If he maintains the pace he's on right now, he's going to shatter the numbers that he put up during his sophomore season. Chancey is doing a fantastic job of setting up all the great athletes around him on the DC offense. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1836884' first='Jr' last='Harris'] - 2028 Athlete</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>If you checked out the Deer Creek team preview back in the summer, you probably weren't surprised when 2028 athlete [player_tooltip player_id='1836884' first='Jr' last='Harris'] emerged this fall as one of Deer Creek's top two-way weapons. He came over from Bishop McGuinness, where he helped lead the Irish to a 5A Runner Up finish last year. Harris has been electric for the Antlers so far this season. He's given Chancey a break, coming in as a wildcat quarterback who is truly a dual-threat option. Opponents can't just focus on stopping his running abilities or he'll make them pay. Then he's turned around and become one of their top cornerbacks on a defense, who is simply getting better and better.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1164646' first='Mason' last='Mayhew'] - 2028 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Junior wide receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1164646' first='Mason' last='Mayhew'] has already been firmly on the PRZ-Oklahoma radar this season. Mayhew earned "Top Performer" honors in week zero and then again in week two for his performances against Sand Springs and Edmond Memorial respectively. Going back and looking at all of our coverage of Mayhew in the past, almost all of it has been from his performances at PRZ-Oklahoma showcases in the offseason. All of that offseason work is paying off as Mayhew is starting to perform incredibly well on Friday nights. He's leading the team in receiving and has also emerged as one of their top defensive players.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1612586' first='Miles' last='Mayhew'] - 2029 Linebacker</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Another 2029 prospect to keep an eye on moving forward and the younger brother of Mason. Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1612586' first='Miles' last='Mayhew'] has gotten off to a really good start this season. He really had a breakout moment in the season opener against Sand Springs and has continued to improve over the last few weeks. PRZ-Oklahoma first started covering Mayhew when he stood out at a February showcase in Broken Arrow. Looking at his early film, there's a lot of natural instincts with how he plays the game as a defender who sees the ball and goes and gets the ball.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
