Week One Game Balls: Top Performers Around The Lone Star State

Week 1 of the Texas high school football season delivered saw many athletes have statement performances across the Lone Star State. From explosive playmakers piling up yards and touchdowns to defensive standouts taking over games, several athletes rose to the occasion when the lights were brightest. Here several players whose production, effort and impact helped set the tone for their teams in week one.    Mosley set the tone in Crawford's week one win over LaPorte. He had 213 yards receiving with four total touchdowns, including a punt return for a score. Mosley is a big body target, he has an extended catch radius, strong hands and he has the ability to win the 50/50 balls consistently. He is a polished route runner with ability to sink his hips, get in and out of his breaks quickly and Mosley has the burst to create separation early in his routes. The Ole Miss commit will be a weapon in a talented Crawford offense this season.     The Texas commit rushed for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 20-14 win over South Oak Cliff. Williams-Callis is an elite runner with the speed and burst to explode for game changing plays anytime he touches the ball. He extremely agile, Williams-Callis can stop on a dime and he can cut, shift gears quickly. Heading into his senior season, he is on the verge of becoming the all-time leading rusher in Texas high school football history.     Brassfield made his debut under center for Lewisville and displayed his play making ability at the quarterback position. Brassfield has clean mechanics, he throws from a solid base and he engages his hips to get extra torque on his throws. He has a quick release that enables him to thread the needle into tight coverage windows. When the pocket breaks down, he has the athleticism to navigate a heavy pass rush and make accurate passes on the run. Brassfield is a strong runner who showed his skill set to make plays with his feet. In the Farmers week one win over the Scots, he passed for 5 touchdowns at a 76% completion rate and he rushed for a touchdown. With Brassfield under center, the Farmers have a signal caller who can spread the ball around to their playmakers and he is a big play waiting to happen with the football in his hands.     Martin III is explosive, he is phone booth quick with the ability to cut on a dime and accelerate without making false steps. He runs with excellent pad level in between the tackles and he has the burst at the second level to make a house call for six. Whether he lines up in the backfield at running back or at receiver, Martin III is a weapon with the football in his hands. In a week one win over Highland Park, he exploded for 96 yards rushing with a touchdown and he had 2 receiving touchdowns with 96 yards. Martin III is a playmaker that coaches have to create ways to get the ball in his hands.     Mathis saw snaps on both sides of the ball for Lewisville, catching an early touchdown, showing his versatility. He has strong hands with the ability to explode off the line, enabling him to create separation. On the touchdown reception he displayed the body control and strength to absorb contact, out muscling the defender to make the grab for six. Mathis was a difference maker at safety, making big hits, he played with a ballhawk mentality and he made a crucial interception in the second half to halt a Highland Park drive. The Northern Arizona commit, also contributed on special teams, making key returns to give the Farmers good field position. He's off to a fast start this season and you expect him to be a key contributor for the Farmers this season.     Coleman and Shadow Creek scored a week one win over Summer Creek 24-14, with Tavis making big plays under center. Coleman passed for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns, showing the arm talent to stretch the field with the deep ball and make timely throws in rhythm. The sharks signal caller looked like he was in midseason form and he will be a key cog in the Shadow Creek attack this fall.     Davis came out in week one on fire, leading C.E King to 70-10 win over Conroe. Davis filled up the stat sheet, passing 272 yards, three touchdowns and he rushed for a touchdown. He has great touch on his deep ball, makes accurate throws outside the pocket and he has the arm talent to make every throw on the route tree at a high completion rate. Davis is smooth, his footwork is clean and deliberate, allowing to deliver strikes in rhythm. With Davis's skill set, look for C.E King to put up big numbers on offense this season.     Schad was efficient in week one, completing 86% of his passes for 310 yards, 5 touchdowns, while rushing for 90 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Schad was in midseason form, showing clean footwork combined with the ability to avoid pressure and he has the arm talent to make layered throws at all levels of the field. His running ability gives Weiss an added weapon in their arsenal. Look for the Wolves to make a another run in the playoffs this season.     Ryan put on a show in week one for Lake Creek offensively, throwing for 431 yards and 5 touchdowns. He showed excellent pocket presence, he climbs the pocket when the rush gets close, keeping his eyes on his targets and he made big throws at all levels of the field. Ryan's ability to throw his receivers open in rhythm allowed the Lake Creek offense to make big plays. With Ryan under center, Lake Creek is a team to keep an eye on this season.     Miller had an impressive state line in Lake Creek's opening week win, with 15 receptions for 263 yards with 2 touchdowns, he had an 80 yard kick return, totaling 343 yards from scrimmage. Miller is explosive off the line, which enables him to get on defensive backs early in his routes and he has the speed to separate from defenders at the second level. He is a special teams threat, when he finds a seam, he has the burst to make a house call for six. Look for Miller to continue to give defenses fits all season long.     Crayton opened up the season in grand fashion with a monster game against rival Ennis in week one. Crayton had 7 receptions for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns. He has the speed to stretch the field, he is explosive off the ball and he excels after that catch in the open field with his ability separate at the second level. Look for him to continue to get touches as the Indians take on Coppell in week two.
