INDIAN LAND | The 2025 season for the Indian Land Warriors was among one of the best in the history of the program. A 9-1 regular season was followed by a playoff run that eventually came up just short in the Class 5A, Division II Upper State Championship game.

The calendar has now flipped to 2026 and within all the reclassifications in the state, Indian Land found its way down to Class 4A and are among a handful of favorites to be playing in Orangeburg on Thanksgiving weekend.

We saw why in person this week.

One of the main reasons is junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1467825' first='Matt' last='Kucia'] and his experience with the system. The third-year starter looked to be in midseason form on the practice field from both a physical standpoint, as well as a leadership standpoint, as he was constantly demanding better from his teammates nearly every play. Standout sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1823430' first='MJ' last='Conner'] is also expected to be a focal point on both offense and defense, and another reason expectations for the season are sky-high.

Surrounding Kucia will be an inexperienced skill position group that features just one senior, wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1819399' first='Isaiah' last='Thomas'] and even he is a new face; Thomas is a transfer from Catawba Ridge. Junior receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1822507' first='Kenneth' last='Wilson'] will be the lead returner in terms of receiving yards from last season. North Allegheny (Penn.) transfer [player_tooltip player_id='2044503' first='Maxwell' last='Curry'] is expected to take over a starting wide receiver role as well.

Despite the inexperience and unfamiliarity with their quarterback, each of the starting receivers looked to be in sync with Kucia. Each of the three showcased smooth route running at all three levels, as well as excellent hands. You wouldn't be able to tell that Thomas and Curry have only had limited time with Kucia with the on-field chemistry that was on showcase.

As far as the ground attack goes, the Warriors will have to replace Jamol Horton, but they believe junior [player_tooltip player_id='1820001' first='Christian' last='Hunt'] is the man that can do it. Hunt scratched the surface with 312 yards last season and with the speed and agility he showcased, there might be a fourth number added to his 2026 rushing total.

Defensively, Indian Land will return nearly every top contributor from last season, especially in the secondary. That will be a featured group that is consisted of cornerbacks Jabeez Felters and [player_tooltip player_id='1819991' first='KJ' last='Drakeford'] along with senior [player_tooltip player_id='1822499' first='Christian' last='Davis'] manning one of the safety positions. Each of those three looked outstanding in 1-on-1 drills against defensive backs and they are headed toward a stellar season on the back end of the defense.

An impact from transfers won't just be felt on offense, but defensively as well. Junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='951250' first='Caleb' last='Foley'] is a transfer from West Stanly (N.C.) and while he isn't a projected starter, Foley will be an exciting playmaker to watch. He finished his sophomore season with 47 tackles and five tackles for loss. He has a strong frame at 6'2", 215 pounds and his speed and burst are excellent.

Currently ahead of him are linebackers [player_tooltip player_id='1422617' first='Jackson' last='Conner'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1819990' first='Ty' last='Fallecker'] - both of whom are seniors and leaders of the defense. Foley is, though, going to make for an extremely solid rotational piece early in the season. It won't be a bit surprising to see him getting the bulk of the snaps in the later stages of the year.

Two impressive and powerful players will be [player_tooltip player_id='1822494' first='Kent' last='Perry'] and Liam Stephens are standouts on the defensive line as juniors. Watching those two in individual drills was impressive, as they each have excellent footwork and get-off speed. Having to deal with those two sandwiched between seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1822500' first='Jackson' last='Headley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1818197' first='Adam' last='Foster'] spells trouble for any offensive line.

Expectations are high but with a great mixture of veteran leadership and incoming talent, the Warriors are poised for another stellar season and deep playoff run. Head coach Adam Hastings knows that, but he also wants to make sure his group doesn't get too overconfident.

"I just want these guys to stay within themselves and not be too confident in themselves," he said. "We know we have the capabilities of being a great team but in order to be one, we have to continue to work hard and get better each time we step on the practice field. That's what will help this team continue to get better and have an excellent season."

INDIAN LAND | The 2025 season for the Indian Land Warriors was among one of the best in the history of the program. A 9-1 regular season was followed by a playoff run that eventually came up just short in the Class 5A, Division II Upper State Championship game.
