Nashville Christian 34 Davidson Academy 7: What we learned

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Eagles begin the post Jared Curtis era in resounding fashion extending their win streak to 24, the longest current streak in the state of Tennessee.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1196806' first='Tate' last='Mathis'] impresses:</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The 6'0 200lb junior got his place in the spotlight making the start as the official QB1 of the 2-time defending state champs. Mathis led the Eagles on 4 straight TD drives to start the game. The most impressive drive ended with him keeping his balance down the sideline as scoring on a 38yd TD run. He made several throws from out of the pocket, including a 14yd TD to Dominick Willams where he fooled the defense into thinking he was running and tossed a strike at the last second. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='2233328' first='Chris' last='White'] definitely stood out on both sides of the ball making a couple of impressive catches and made a couple of key tackles as a run defender from the CB position. Junior Dominick Willams was one of the favorite targets for Mathis, Willams shows a smooth stride and quickness out of his breaks. [player_tooltip player_id='1588776' first='Hudson' last='Smith'] provided most of the key runs on the evening with a willingness to lower his shoulder between the tackles. East Tennessee St commit Kade Grigsby found the endzone and a had solid night, expect Grigsby to be real factor in the return game as well. The possible wild card could be freshman ATH [player_tooltip player_id='2236333' first='Kelan' last='Taylor'], he got snaps with the starters and the backups and made a couple wow plays at WR. The Troy commit had no problem reaching the 2nd or 3rd level to make blocks and played to the whistle. [player_tooltip player_id='1567255' first='Colin' last='Romero'] and [player_tooltip player_id='866728' first='Matthew' last='Newberry'] were standouts for Nashville Christian. Romero from his RT position was calling out protections and kept Mathis clean the whole game. At 6'0 250lbs there are no frills, its smash mouth running with the ability to carry multiple defenders down the field. The game got away from the Bears early so Moore's running wasn't as effective, but late in the game with the contest decided Moore ran with toughness and he kept his legs moving.
