Marshall Co. Takes Road Win Over Shelbyville

<!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Tigers received a stellar night from their star running back while their defense forced some turnovers and got enough stops to defeat the Golden Eagles on Thursday evening. It was a much needed win after losing last week and it's a game that might build confidence for a Tigers team that has their eyes on a region title. </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Coming off an opening night road loss to Lincoln Co., the Tigers of Marshall Co. were looking to get things back on track and I believe they did in their 43-22 victory over Shelbyville. It wasn't looking good early on but eventually, the Tigers talent overcame some defaults and they found their footing towards achieving a big road win that should gain them some confidence.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The game started faulty for the road Tigers as <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1532507' first='Gavin' last='Shrader'] </strong>threw an interception to <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1532279' first='Cy'Onn' last='Rucker'] </strong>that put the Golden Eagles into prime scoring position. Shelbyville would capitalize as Rucker, who goes both ways for his team, threw a short yard pass to the flat where senior back <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2090154' first='Jackson' last='Themm'] </strong>caught it and easily ran into the end zone. Luckily for the road Tigers, Shelbyville stalled on their drive and had to give the ball back. The Tigers dodged a major bullet here because if the Golden Eagles would have scored another touchdown, the Marshall Co. players might have put their head down and allowed the home team to dominate the rest of the way.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Things began to perk up for Marshall Co. as they would produce their first points on the next drive. Going away from the pass for a minute, the Tigers staff decided to lean on star back <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1885826' first='Tot' last='Gardner'] </strong>and he would go on to have a masterful night that basically won the game for Marshall County. Gardner took the handoff and quickly bursted up the middle where he outran Shelbyville defenders to score his first touchdown of the game. The Tigers would go for two and grab the lead at 8-7 early in the second quarter.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The momentum would continue to swing back and forth. After <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1583156' first='Mylan' last='Morris'] </strong>forced a fumble on the next Golden Eagles drive, Marshall Co. stalled out then gave the ball back to Shelbyville. A few positive runs put Shelbyville in position to score and they would after Rucker rolled to his left then made a desperation throw into the end zone where his receiver came down with the ball to put the Golden Eagles back in the lead.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Holding a 14-8 lead late into the 2nd quarter, all Shelbyville needed to do was find a way to slow down Gardner but they couldn't do it. The Tigers running back found his way back into the end zone after a short yard run that put Marshall Co. ahead 15-14 going into the break. It was a much needed answer for the Tigers offense that had struggled to find a rhythm but somehow had the lead headed into the locker room.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>As the second half got underway, it was anybody's game. Shelbyville had the ball first but couldn't get anything going. I think that opened the door for Marshall Co. to bust through and take command of the contest. The two teams swapped drives until the Tigers grabbed momentum by stuffing the Golden Eagles run game on 4th down to take over on downs. They would immediately strike by giving the ball to Gardner where he ran past defenders for a 44 yard touchdown run that pushed Marshall Co. into the lead at 22-14.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>After the Tiger re-took the lead, it was a continuous downslide for Shelbyville. The entire 4th quarter went into the favor of Marshall Co. as they did anything they wanted on offense. The Golden Eagles team as a whole, especially their defense got tired and looked gassed and simply could not slow down Gardner. Shelbyville still had a shot but on their first 4th quarter possession, Rucker fumbled a missed handoff which gave the Tigers great field position and they would capitalize. On the first play from scrimmage, Gardner took the handoff and raced down the sidelines to produce yet another touchdown, his third of the game and he would not be done.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Trailing 29-14 mid-way through the 4th quarter, Shelbyville gained some life after a solid offensive drive that saw Themm finish with a short yard touchdown run to pull the Golden Eagles back to within seven. Opportunity was there for the Golden Eagles to crawl back into the game but the very next drive, Marshall Co. would slam the door and march towards victory.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:image {"id":2348128,"width":"324px","height":"auto","aspectRatio":"1.6260162601626016","sizeSlug":"large","linkDestination":"none"} --> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepredzone.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2026/08/marshallco-e1787895248873.jpg?w=813" alt="" class="wp-image-2348128" style="aspect-ratio:1.6260162601626016;width:324px;height:auto" /></figure> <!-- /wp:image --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Marshall Co. moved the ball into Shelbyville territory where the coaching staff pulled out a trick play. Shrader tossed the ball to the right into Gardner's hands where he then threw downfield to a wide open <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2343754' first='Kendrick' last='Tears']</strong>, who easily ran into the end zone to increase the Tigers lead to 36-22. Marshall Co. would seal the deal with one more rushing touchdown from Gardner, his fifth of the night to push their lead out to 43-22. All that was left was the clock running out as Shelbyville was too much in a hole to comeback.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This game didn't start the way the Tigers coaching staff wanted but it certainly ended in their favor. Going on the road to win is always big but doing it at Shelbyville, a somewhat rival not too far from home campus is impressive. Marshall Co. needed this win after faltering in “Week One” and needed to get back on track as they maneuver through the rest of their schedule. Gardner produced five of those scores on the ground while also generating a touchdown through the air with a trick play pass in the 4th quarter. The Tigers junior star was outstanding in this contest as his contact balance and speed proved to be too much to handle for the Golden Eagles defense. Gardner was easily the best player on the field this game and a player that boosted his college stock by showing off his playmaking abilities.&nbsp;<br></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>- - - </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Three Stars …..</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>(OL) [player_tooltip player_id='1662928' first='Blake' last='Leigh'] - Shelbyville: </strong>Even though his Golden Eagles team lost and had struggles offensively at times, I thought Leigh had a solid game as the run game pretty much went through his lane all night long. This senior big man consistently drove Marshall Co. D-linemen off the ball, paving the way for his ball carriers to race through big holes. Leigh handles tackle for his squad but for the next level, his game works best at guard where he could develop into a physical, punishing run blocker.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>(DT) [player_tooltip player_id='1583156' first='Mylan' last='Morris'] - Marshall Co.: </strong>The Golden Eagles had some success on occasions running the ball but eventually, Morris began to assert his will and create some physical tackling around the line of scrimmage. The Tigers senior defensive tackle showed the most activity and effort from the Marshall Co. defense on Thursday night, forcing a fumble in the 1st half then laying out some Shelbyville ball carriers in the second period. We didn't see the pass rush in this game but that's another area where Morris can provide strong game play.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>‘29 (Ath) [player_tooltip player_id='1532279' first='Cy'Onn' last='Rucker'] - Shelbyville: </strong>It was an up and down night for this sophomore two-way talent but Rucker was still a major factor in why the Golden Eagles were in the game to win mid-way through the 4th quarter. I thought Rucker showed command and poise playing quarterback but really thought he stood out more at defensive back. I see upside on that side of the ball for Rucker where he could develop into a playmaking ball hawk with a versatile skill set.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>- - - - -&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Game Notes ……</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>- Running back <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1885826' first='Tot' last='Gardner'] </strong>is someone we like a good bit here at Prep Redzone Tennessee. I see an athletic ball carrier that doesn't shy away from contact but has the speed to run past defenders when needed. I also see upside with him as a pass catcher. He started the game out wide in hopes of using his athleticism in space and it worked on occasions. I think he is in for a big year but only if his offensive line can do better at taking the right angles and sustaining their blocks further. For the future, Gardner needs to get bigger and gain a little more mass to maintain himself throughout the entire game. He also isn't the tallest guy but at 5 '9, nearly 5'10, I think Gardner has enough height along with his natural athleticism to make his way to the next level.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>- Getting a good look at Shelbyville tonight, I think most of the team needs to play harder and faster on a more consistent basis. Besides a few players like <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1662928' first='Blake' last='Leigh']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2090154' first='Jackson' last='Themm']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1532279' first='Cy'Onn' last='Rucker'] </strong>and a few others, I thought most of the team moved slow, looked lethargic and didn't compete hard enough to find the victory column. A lot of the players looked gassed and tired by the 4th quarter as well. It was warm outside but the Golden Eagles have had enough time in summer practice to get acclimated. They were also coming off a big win over Tullahoma last week too, so I'm not sure why most of the Shelbyville players looked like they were running in mud.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>- Marshall Co. has a good young core on offense with Shrader, Gardner and Tears but their offensive line still has a lot of work to do moving forward. A lot of passing plays that were called had Shrader rolling out to buy time for him and his receivers to get open. That speaks to me that the offensive line has a hard time driving guys off the ball or holding up in pass protection.
