KHSAA Week 1 Player Spotlight: Highlands vs. Frederick Douglass

<p>It's gameday! Our final preview/player spotlight piece will be on Highlands vs. Frederick Douglass in a matchup between two teams looking to make a deep run in their respective playoffs this season. Let's dive right in:</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Highlands</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">[player_tooltip player_id='1200564' first='Tayden' last='Lorenzen'] scored 23 total touchdowns for Highlands in 2025, including 18 rushing touchdowns. Lorenzen has bulked up to 6'3" and 230 pounds heading into his senior season. He's an absolute unit in the red zone, where he plays QB out of the Wildcat. In short-yardage packages, Lorenzen has demonstrated his ability to shake off would-be tacklers, carrying piles through the goal line, and even hurdling defenders along the edge of the field. He finished the season with 679 total yards of offense and looks to build on that this fall during his senior year. </p>     <p class="text-gray-700">[player_tooltip player_id='1200576' first='Gabe' last='Williams'] was limited to seven games for Highlands last season, totaling 21 receptions for 234 yards (498 all-purpose yards) on 11.1 yards per catch. He added a fumble recovery and two interceptions to his resume defensively -- including a game-sealing pick-six to beat Ryle last season. He plays downhill very well and is able to burst through the line of scrimmage from his safety position in blitz packages. He hits hard and welcomes physicality, which helps him cleanly break up would-be receptions. Offensively, he is at his best when he's able to use his athleticism to break free to the outside and break defenders with his legs. He also plays special teams and returns punts.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">[player_tooltip player_id='1666801' first='Colton' last='Kremer'] plays fast and aggressively, which makes him perfect for playing both running back and middle linebacker for Highlands. He was impressive against Ryle in a recent scrimmage, demonstrating his aggressiveness by shedding blocks and angling himself in pursuit of the football. Against Male earlier this month, he finished with nine rushing attempts for 76 yards. He's the type of player whose performance on the field can provide energy and leadership to both sides of the football. I expect Kremer to have more opportunities on both sides of the football heading into his junior season. </p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Frederick Douglass</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">[player_tooltip player_id='1145692' first='Jayden' last='Guzman'] is coming off an impressive freshman season as starting QB for Frederick Douglass. He finished last season completing 106-189 (56.1%) of his passing attempts for 1,228 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Guzman has a ton of poise in the pocket for his age and can navigate through pressure while keeping his eyes downfield for an open receiver. He has really fast feet and a quick release with the football. Guzman is also patient in the pocket and waits for his receivers to break/release before leading them to an open spot downfield. He currently holds one Division I offer, but I expect that list to grow by this time next year.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Coming off an All-City 1st-team selection in 2025, [player_tooltip player_id='1222652' first='Xavier' last='Carter'] provides a reliable, aggressive presence in the trenches for the Frederick Douglass Broncos. Carter is effective when executing combo blocks. He has a quick first step, which helps establish his position when conducting down and reach blocks. Carter is deceptively agile for his size and has great physicality at the point of contact. He stays low and drives through his defender. At right tackle, Carter will be a key component to the Broncos' offensive success during his senior campaign in 2026.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">[player_tooltip player_id='1715694' first='Kaden' last='John'] is a speedster track star when he's not being regarded as one of the top wide receivers in his class. He runs a 4.4 40-yard dash, and it shows on the football field. John has the speed to beat defenders along the edge before cutting upfield to find open space. He has demonstrated his abilities in contested catch situations and has strong arms that can hold onto the football through contact. I expect him to get more opportunities with the football entering his junior season as he looks to expand his list of offers. He holds two, which are from Eastern Kentucky and UT Martin. </p>
