Friends, fans, players, readers, we've made it. Welcome to Week 1 of the 2026 North Carolina high school football season. We have loads of content on the site right now: 2029 rankings, all-state and breakout teams, and yes, preview coverage. One of my favorite parts of the first half of the season is intriguing non-conference games, and in this feature, I'm previewing three games between teams that play in different areas of the state.

Intriguing Week 1 Cross-State Matchups

Editor's Note: If you're new here, the thing I get the most complaints about is not rankings, predictions, or awards, but geography. "Cross-State" here just means a team is traveling outside of its typical region of the state to play a non-conference game.

Dudley @ Cardinal Gibbons

While there's plenty to get excited about in Dudley-Cardinal Gibbons, we have to start with the matchups out wide. Southern Miss commit Vermont Carmack could face off against Notre Dame commit Xavier Hasan in one of the best receiver-defensive back matchups of the week.

Of course, Dudley wants to run the ball, and that puts star running back Michael Boone and Gibbons linebacker Skylar Alston on a collision course. It also makes for an intriguing matchup for the interior of the Dudley offensive line, led by recent stock-riser Kameron Abrams, and the Gibbons defensive front, anchored by edge rusher Griffin Cockerham and under-the-radar junior Kieran Frieary. That's probably the key to the game. If Dudley can run consistently, the Panthers have a strong chance to win on the road.

Obviously, I'm excited to watch a new-look Cardinal Gibbons offense. The Crusaders are inexperienced but talented at some key positions. Junior quarterback Mason Karras and sophomore running back Truth Caesar are potential game-changers, but they have to prove it when the lights get bright. A veteran offensive line group, led by left tackle Malek Griffin, faces a strong defensive front highlighted by true nose guard [player_tooltip player_id='2172185' first='NaShon' last='Overby'].

There's talent everywhere in this clash of teams that have their sights set on state championships in their respective classes.

Also See: All-Breakout Defense

Monroe @ Hoke County

One of the Charlotte area's most intriguing 5A teams heads due east to face a young, promising Hoke County squad. There's so much young talent on display in this one. These teams have a combined five ranked 2029 prospects, mostly in the trenches.

Monroe boasts edge rusher Joseph Jackson and big, talented two-way lineman Jayqurius Mcilwain. Hoke County has two potentially elite defensive tackles: Davon Bronson and Kameron Campbell.

The Bucks had a fantastic defense last year, led by Bronson, Campbell, and linebacker Chris Walters. The offense struggled, though. What can they get from receivers Wayne Claiborne III and Machai Brown? And can the running game, led by senior Darrell Baria, find more consistency between the tackles?

Monroe, as always, has several electric athletes. Star running back Jamir Jackson is joined by Forest Hills transfer [player_tooltip player_id='1678618' first='Kylan' last='Polk'] in what becomes one of the top backfields in the 5A class. They'll be tested early against Hoke County's defensive front.

The Redhawks are 5A dark horses, and I think we'll learn a bit about their upside in Week 1.

Also See: All-Breakout Offense

Mallard Creek @ Rolesville

I considered leaving this one for a standalone preview, but decided to include it here as arguably the biggest matchup in the state this week. Last year, Mallard Creek exposed some of Rolesville's flaws in a 36-21 win, many of which persisted throughout the year.

Mallard Creek is experienced. In fact, the Mavericks return 17 starters from a strong team last season. My question is whether they can take the next step.

I think Rolesville will improve; the question is by how much.

I'm watching the trenches here, for obvious reasons. We'll see five or six FBS prospects on the lines of scrimmage between the two squads.

It's likely that South Carolina commit Jayden Broadie will take plenty of snaps against 2028 Top-10 prospect Austin Ballou, which projects as one of the best edge-tackle matchups of the entire season. Watch out for interior guys like Genesis Allen and Jordan Thompson against Mallard Creek's interior offensive line. Michael Heard and Cleveland Smith held down the guard spots last year for a dominant offensive line. I think Mallard Creek has the advantage here, but I'm interested to see if Rolesville's inexperienced front can create havoc.

Similarly, we have a talented but unproven Mallard Creek receiver group against a talented and proven Rolesville secondary. Rolesville's combination of transfers (Asaiah Brown and Ra'Sean Williams) and experienced returners (Marquis Bryant, Javon Campbell) could be elite. Mallard Creek receivers Devin Dukes and Tyrell Barze—who should play multiple positions—are the headliners on what should be a solid Mallard Creek passing attack.

On Friday, though, I think the Mavericks will opt for a more ground-heavy attack. I expect a great game from the teams I've ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in my 8A power rankings.

Which other games need to be on our radar? Let me know on Twitter/X (@whelms21). Lock in on Prep Redzone for more preview content.
