Wofford Prospect Camp Defensive Standouts

SPARTANBURG | As promised during the offensive standouts piece, we're going to jump right into highlighting the standout defensive performers from Wednesday's Wofford Prospect Camp.   Here are 10 players that shined during the afternoon.   Defensive Line   Hudson Maxwell, Fort Mill 2028 - Maxwell has an excellent mix of footwork, power and speed. His 4.9 40-yard dash time was tops among the defensive linemen and that combined with his footwork and get-off speed makes him extremely difficult to get hands on and block.   [player_tooltip player_id='2206348' first='Jerome' last='Newman'], Statesville (North Carolina) 2027 - Newman continuously drew attention from coaches and other linemen during the afternoon. His power and physicality gave him the edge in multiple 1-on-1 matchups, an area he performed well in.   Collin Grooms, Bulloch Academy (Georgia) 2027 - Grooms rivaled Maxwell in nearly every aspect and held his own throughout the afternoon. His speed was there, his footwork was excellent and his power was evident. He certainly has the skillset to be a game wrecker.   Linebackers   [player_tooltip player_id='2098783' first='Tyler' last='Stafford'], Oceanside Collegiate 2028 - Stafford has a real nose for the football, and he showed that mainly during the 1-on-1 sessions at the end of the afternoon. His footwork and sneaky speed allow for him to more than hold his own in pass coverage.   [player_tooltip player_id='1602363' first='Ben' last='Eikenberry'], Wando 2027 - 235-pound linebackers aren't normally supposed to run a 5.1 40-yard dash in these types of conditions, but Elkenberry possess that trait. That speed allows him to cover running backs and tight ends in coverage, as well as attack holes and be a run-game stopper.   [player_tooltip player_id='1476834' first='Teigen' last='Pounds'], Daniel 2028 - Pounds is another sneaky-fast linebacker that can more than hold his own in coverage. As a junior, he still has time to grow more into his body and develop more speed, power and knowledge, all key components of playing the position.   Defensive Backs   Dallas Fishback, Woodland 2027 - Fishback had one of the best performances of the day, showcasing speed, knowledge and the ability to cover any routes receivers ran his way. He knows when to make a play on the ball and does so in relatively clean fashion. He can also go up and make a play at receiver when you need him to.   Joziah Nicholson, West Forsyth (North Carolina) 2027 - Another player that is able to play both sides of the ball, Forsyth was superb all afternoon, whether that was agility drills, coverage drills or 1-on-1 coverage. He played some of the best coverage of anyone in attendance and shined while doing so.   [player_tooltip player_id='1664633' first='Caleb' last='Renwrick'], River Bluff 2027 - Renwrick isn't the most physical in coverage, but his elite ball skills help make up for that. His speed and ability to break on throws makes up for what he lacks in physicality, and he was in on several pass breakups during 1-on-1 drills.   [player_tooltip player_id='1610599' first='Selester' last='Stewart'], High Point Christian (North Carolina) 2027 - Another out-of-state camper that wasn't the most physical, but more than held his on during 1-on-1 drills. Stewart was consistently making life difficult for receivers in coverage and defended several passes on bigger receivers.
