We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. They were a top five team in the preseason rankings and they remained in the top five throughout the regular season. Thomas opened the 2025 campaign with three straight dominant wins over their non-district opponents. District play opened up in late September but the Terriers continued to dominate the competition. In fact, they weren't tested until Halloween night in week nine. Thomas came into the week with a perfect 8-0 record. The closest game to that point had been a 28-point win over Southwest Covenant the week before. They traveled to Mangum for a match-up between two undefeated teams that had been equally dominant all season. The district championship was on the line in this head to head clash. The score was tied at 21 late in the fourth quarter but Mangum stunned Thomas on a QB sneak to get the win and the district title. Thomas bounced back the following week to wrap up the regular season with a 9-1 record. They beat Ringling in the first round but then the season came to an end in the quarterfinal round. They lost to a Hominy team that would go on to play for the A-2 state championship. Overall, the season ended at 10-2 as the Terriers won double digit games for the second consecutive season. But it wasn't enough to contend for the gold ball and that certainly left a sour taste in their mouth as they officially turn the page and start preparing for the 2026 football season. And once again, the Terriers have plenty of expectations coming into a new season.

2026 OUTLOOK

Once again, the Thomas Terriers are coming into a new season as a top five team and they expect to be in the mix for the state championship. Thomas brings back seven starters for an offensive unit that averaged nearly 40 points per game last season. The strength of this unit will definitely be on the offensive line. The Terriers not only bring back all five starters up front, but they are guys that have been starting for a few years now. Thomas will lean on that veteran presence on the line of scrimmage as they replace their starting quarterback. The Terriers are confident in their replacement but he is replacing a four-year starter at the position. On the other side of the ball, you have seven starters back for a defense that gave up a little over 10 points per game and had several shut outs. And just like with the offense, the strength of this unit will be on the line of scrimmage. Thomas' coaches are confident in the guys in the back end but they also know they are at their best and deepest on the line of scrimmage. And the Terriers enter a new district this season and 2027. There are a few new opponents but the majority of the district slate is similar to what Thomas has been used to playing. On paper, they look like the favorite to get it done in this district but they'll have to earn it on the field. Now, when it comes to Class A-2, everyone is chasing Talihina after they ran away with the state title a year ago and bring back almost everyone. But the Terriers will take things one game at a time and it wouldn't be surprising to see them in the mix for the gold ball when December rolls around.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Landon Wald - Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Tye Littlebird - Quarterback (2025 All State Honorable Mention)
Warren Cometsevah - Wide Receiver/Linebacker

PLAYERS TO WATCH

This Thomas squad is full of seniors that have plenty of experience and have been through some absolute wars but they aren't the only ones to look out for this season. 2028 running back and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1838973' first='Cash' last='Willis'] is going to be a player to watch on both sides of the ball, but mostly on offense at the running back position. The Terriers are breaking in a new quarterback and having a player like Willis back at running back will certainly help him. Last season, Willis finished with nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He was also a threat in the passing game and can be a safety valve out of the backfield for this year's new quarterback.

We mentioned it earlier in the preview how the quarterback position was the biggest question mark coming into this season. It's not easy replacing a four-year starter at the position. But the Terriers are confident in 2027 quarterback and defensive back Cason Frymore to get the job done this season. Last year, in spot-duty, he threw for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns. He was also productive in the run game for the Terriers. He can also play defense and had an impact in the secondary with a pair of interceptions. But there's no doubt that all eyes will be on him going into this season at the QB position. But he's set up to have a successful senior season.

2027 standout [player_tooltip player_id='1836402' first='Deuce' last='Tripp'] is going to have a huge role for the Terriers in all three phases of the game this season. Tripp will see playing time on offense at running back but he'll also be one of their returning starters on defense at the linebacker position. Last season, Tripp finished the year with a little over 50 tackles and the Terriers are expecting him to take another step forward this season. And finally, Tripp is a weapon in special teams as their kicker. He put the ball into the end zone double digit times last season and has only gotten stronger. Not having to worry about opponents returning a kickoff takes a lot of pressure off special teams and the defense.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how the strength of the offense was going to start on the offensive line. With all five starters returning up front, it's hard not to pay attention to what the Terriers could be on the line of scrimmage. 2027 offensive and defensive lineman Evan Eyster is getting ready for his third season as a starter up front for the Terriers. He leads one of the more experienced offensive lines, regardless of class, into the 2026 football season. He'll also turn around and impact the line of scrimmage on the defensive line. Last season, he filled up the stat sheet and it's hard not to think that he'll do the same thing again when the Terriers take the field in 2026.

We're looking forward to seeing 2027 wide receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1343471' first='Harper' last='Hamar'] this season because he has the potential to be their ultimate weapon on offense. Hamar finished last year with 33 carries for nearly 300 yards and a couple touchdowns. He also had 22 catches for nearly 300 yards and was also productive on the defensive side of the ball. Hamar is a playmaker that is at his best with the football in his hands and getting out in space. Don't be surprised if his production goes up this season as the Terriers try to find new ways to get him involved on the offensive side of the ball. There is a lot of potential here for a breakout season.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Aron Conley - 2027 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1836538' first='Carter' last='Frymire'] - 2027 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Hunter Reinschmidt - 2027 Wide Receiver/Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1838970' first='Jaxon' last='Priefert'] - 2027 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Jayce Villines - 2027 Wide Receiver/Linebacker
Kasyn Marshall - 2027 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Remi Kohout - 2027 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1832731' first='Ryan' last='Lehman'] - 2028 Wide Receiver/Linebacker
Tony Escalante - 2028 Wide Receiver/Linebacker

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 28th - Mangum
- The 2026 football season kicks off with a home game against Mangum. These two have played some absolute classics in the last two seasons. But with Mangum moving up to A-1, this now becomes a non-district match-up. Thomas won 47-46 in 2024 while the Tigers won 28-21 last year, in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Sept. 4th - Hennessey
- Following their showdown with Mangum, the Terriers will welcome Hennessey to town. This is a new match-up on the schedule for Thomas as they have no recent match-ups with Hennessey. It's an interesting match-up between two teams that have had their fair share of winning seasons over the last few decades.
Sept. 11th - AT Minco
- The first road game of the regular season is a big one as they'll go to Minco in week two. Minco expects to contend in Class A-1 this season. These two teams haven't played since 2019. They met in the 2019 playoffs and Thomas prevailed 47-45. The Bulldogs will have a new head coach that won a state title at his last stop.
Sept. 18th - Merritt
- The Terriers will wrap up non-district play with a home game against Merritt in week three. These two teams haven't played in the last two seasons. They used to be district opponents from 2020-2023. During that stretch, each team won two meetings. The Terriers won the last meeting, beating Merritt 30-16 in 2023.
Sept. 25th - AT Apache
- District play opens up for the Terriers in week four, with a road game against Apache. The Terriers dominated last season's meeting, winning 48-3. However, Apache has won two of the last three in the series, including a 2023 playoff victory over the Terriers. Thomas will look to get district play off to a solid start here with a win.
Oct. 2nd - Empire
- The Terriers host Empire in week five and this is the first of a couple district match-ups that feature brand new opponents for Thomas. The Terriers have no recent history with Empire and it makes sense. The Bulldogs have been back and forth between 8-man football and 11-man football several times in the last decade.
Oct. 9th - AT Southwest Covenant
- Thomas travels to face Southwest Covenant in week six. These two teams have been district opponents since Southwest Covenant moved up from 8-man football to Class A-2 in 2024. The Terriers have had the advantage in the young series. They've won each of the last two meetings, including last year's 34-6 victory.
Oct. 23rd - AT Hobart
- Because Thomas is in the only 7-team district in Class A-2, they have a bye week halfway through October. After having week seven off, they'll travel to Hobart in week eight. This is another new district opponent for the Terriers. They have no recent history with Hobart but this will be a big game towards the standings.
Oct. 30th - Carnegie
- After back to back road games, the Terriers will return home in week nine for their final home game of the regular season. They'll host Carnegie and these two teams have been district opponents in each of the last two seasons. The Terriers won 62-28 in last season's meeting and have won eight straight in the series.
Nov. 6th - AT Mooreland
- For the third straight year, Thomas will wrap up the regular season with a week ten game against Mooreland. These two teams have been district opponents for over a decade and it's a series that has been very even during that stretch. However, the Terriers rolled to a 42-0 win last season and have won the last two meetings.

NOTABLE

Head coach Bob Ward has become synonymous with Thomas Terrier football. He's been with the program for over two decades and is about to enter his 19th season as head coach. Last season, Ward hit a milestone with the Terriers towards the end of the regular season. Ward won his 150th game as head coach of the Thomas Terriers. He's now 153-74 as head coach of the Terriers and won the 2014 state championship. All in all, Thomas has won ten state championships in program history but only two of them have been in the last 55 years. This is a program that is hungry for making it back to the championship hunt. They played for the state title in 2020 but then had back to back seasons where they missed the playoffs in 2021 and 2022. Ward has won a lot of games with the Terriers and he has had them right in the mix for state championship contention. Ironically, the last two seasons ended with losses to the eventual A-2 runner ups. This season, we're expecting Ward to add to his win total and contend for a spot in the state championship game.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2025 - 10-2 - Lost In Class A-2 Quarterfinals
2024 - 11-2 - Lost In Class A-2 Semifinals
2023 - 5-6 - Lost In Class A 1st Round
2022 - 1-9 - Missed Playoffs
2021 - 2-8 - Missed Playoffs

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

10 State Championships

2014 - Beat Cashion 28-0
2002 - Beat Ringling 21-0
1969 - Beat Marietta 8-6
1961 - Beat Weleetka 34-0
1957 - Beat Alex 34-0
1956 - Beat Morris 21-19
1955 - Beat Hennessey 21-12
1951 - Beat Davis
1950 - Beat OSD 21-14
1947 - Beat Kiefer 28-7
