TAAC Six 5A/6A Preview: Asheboro

Asheboro put together one of the best seasons in the area a year ago, exploding out of the gate with an impressive start and establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the conference. Injuries eventually began to take their toll during the second half of the season, slowing the Blue Comets' momentum, but they still battled their way into the playoffs before their postseason run came to an end. Despite the disappointing finish, Asheboro proved they could compete with anyone when healthy and laid a strong foundation for another successful season.   Heading into this season, expectations remain high. If the Blue Comets can stay healthy and develop the depth needed to withstand a long schedule, they have the talent to make another playoff run and potentially go even deeper. The experience gained from last year's success, combined with another offseason of development, should have Asheboro in position to once again contend near the top of the conference and be a dangerous team once November arrives. The rising junior found the end zone nine times last season and has the skill set to take another major step forward this fall.   Brinton is a true home-run threat every time he touches the football, combining breakaway speed with the vision to consistently move the chains. He's the type of back who can turn a routine carry into a long touchdown, but he's just as valuable grinding out tough first downs between the tackles. With a bigger workload this season, expect Brinton to be one of the focal points of Asheboro's offense and a strong candidate to surpass the 1,000-yard mark. After accounting for 25 total touchdowns last season while eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards, Brinton has established himself as a true do-it-all weapon who can change a game from anywhere on the field.   Whether he's taking handoffs, catching passes, or creating explosive plays in space, Brinton is a constant mismatch for opposing defenses. His versatility, playmaking ability, and production make him one of the premier offensive prospects in the area. If he puts together another season like last year, he'll be one of the leading candidates for Conference Player of the Year honors and could lead Asheboro on another deep playoff run.     [player_tooltip player_id='866227' first='Jaydon' last='Spruill'] is one of the top two-way playmakers on Asheboro's roster and enters his junior season poised for an even bigger role. The rising junior made an impact on both sides of the ball last year, scoring touchdowns as both a runner and receiver while proving to be a versatile offensive weapon.   Defensively, Spruill was just as productive, finishing with 37 total tackles and two interceptions. His instincts, athleticism, and ability to make plays in all three phases make him one of the conference's most complete rising juniors. Expect Spruill to be a key contributor in every facet of the game as Asheboro looks to make another deep postseason run.     DJ Scott is another rising senior who is primed for a breakout season. He found the end zone seven times on the ground last year despite sharing carries, but with an expanded role in Asheboro's offense, expect his production to take another step forward. Scott runs with power, finishes through contact, and has the burst to create explosive plays when he reaches the second level.   His impact isn't limited to offense. Defensively, Scott recorded 25 total tackles and seven tackles for loss, showing his physicality and ability to disrupt plays in the backfield.
