2029 Defensive Backs College Coaches Need To Get Familiar With

As of right now, the 2029 class is full of intriguing defensive backs who already show some top-notch traits. If college coaches want to get their foot in the door early for some of these players, then they'll have to start focusing on them in 2026.    [player_tooltip player_id='1590819' first='Jalen' last='Newsome'] is a very fluid defensive back with tons of potential. He has incredibly active hands at the catch point, which leads to a consistent flow of pass breakups in all three levels of the field.   He also reads the field very well and seemingly runs the routes for receivers on occasion, which obviously puts him in advantageous positions from a leverage standpoint. Newsome is also very good in off-coverage, where he can use his above-average closing speed and anticipation to his advantage as well.   There's a reason why he's currently our No.1-ranked DB in the 2029 cycle, and he'll definitely be getting some phone calls from college coaches in the near future.     [player_tooltip player_id='2007508' first='Joseph' last='Hunter, Jr.'] has excellent size and athleticism for the position, and he consistently impresses in a couple of important areas.   He's not the fastest player in the world, but he makes up for it with physicality and great processing skills. A defensive back doesn't have to run a 4.4s 40-yard dash if they're constantly putting themselves in the right spot every play.   Hunter Jr. is a good run defender as well, showing time and time again that he's not afraid to throw his body around to stop ball-carriers. He's a very intriguing safety prospect in the 2029 class, and he's someone who college coaches need to keep an eye on over the next few seasons.     [player_tooltip player_id='2035745' first='James' last='Van Der Post'] was one of the best freshman strong safeties in 2025. He consistently shows the ability to read and react in a split-second, and is very good at sifting through traffic or playing over the top when it comes to defending the run. He takes excellent angles to the ball as well, making good form tackles at the point of contact.   When defending the pass, he's very good at recognizing where the "weak spot" is post-snap, and then he'll gravitate towards that area if he doesn't have a deep assignment.   Van Der Post definitely takes the game seriously, and it's going to be incredibly interesting to see how he does as a sophomore in 2026.     [player_tooltip player_id='1896730' first='Sean' last='C Adams Jr'] doesn't have much on tape yet, but his size and athleticism should give him a leg up as a sophomore. He's taken reps at both cornerback and safety for Bayside, and he could start to gain some more publicity in 2026.   He's the type of player who could make college scouts want to mark their calendars for when his game film drops, because the potential is undoubtedly there for the 6'0" defensive back.     [player_tooltip player_id='1627884' first='Jeremiah' last='Emanuel'] is on the smaller side, but he doesn't let that affect him on the field. He played on both sides of the ball as a freshman, and though that may continue going forward, cornerback is where he might be most impressive on a down-by-down basis.   He's another player who understands the wide receiver position and will anticipate routes, leading to pass deflections and interceptions. Despite being only 5'7", he has a pretty good vertical and has made a few plays on jump balls against bigger receivers in 2025 as well.   Emanuel is a 2029 prospect who could begin to see some offers roll in with another impressive season in 2026.
