Tennessee high school football is loaded with talent heading into the 2026 season, and the Class 4A group is packed with standout defensive playmakers. As summer approaches, several guys are emerging as top prospects to watch in Tennessee high school football recruiting.   In this scouting series breaking down the top football players by position and classification, here's an in-depth look at the top five Class 4A defensive backs in Tennessee entering the 2026 high school football season.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   <figure class="wp-block-image"><img src="https://prepredzone.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2026/05/13-Mason-Laster-crop-957x629-1779297973.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2212779" /></figure>   2027 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1617434' first='Mason' last='Laster'] – Alcoa High School   [player_tooltip player_id='1617434' first='Mason' last='Laster'] is quietly one of the best defensive backs in Tennessee, but doesn't get the respect that he deserves. He's a lockdown cornerback who's shown the ability to take over against anybody, but is still forgotten about when people talk about the elite in-state defenders. However, with a good senior season at Alcoa, he should see his recruitment take off.   The 6-foot, 172-pound corner got his first taste of varsity action last season, totaling 32 tackles, two being for a loss, one interception and three pass deflections in 13 games played. Laster is a lighter athlete, but still plays physical and gets after opposing teams. The rising senior is a hard-nosed defender who plays with a relentless motor, possesses good technique and is a top-tier competitor. In 10 games played, he recorded 40 tackles, four for a loss and a team-high six picks. The rising senior committed to the in-state Tennessee Volunteers earlier this year, but has one final year of high school football.   He offers good size, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 180 pounds, with a long frame that allows him to roam all over center field. Butler is very athletic, moves well, gets downhill quickly when he must shut down the run, has terrific ball skills and is a lockdown safety. He has elite traits across the board and has played well throughout his first two seasons at Springfield High School, warranting offers from nearly every big-time program. Cobbins is one of the top athletes in Tennessee, with elite fluidity, impressive football IQ, quick instincts, a nice brand of physicality, strong ball skills and lockdown coverage from his cornerback spot. He took that next step a season ago, recording 53 tackles, four being for a loss, an impressive eight interceptions, double-digit pass breakups and two defensive scores. He does not hold any offers, but is due for a breakout season along the recruiting trail.   He offers solid size for his position, standing 6-foot and weighing 183 pounds with a long frame that has allowed him to be dominant on both sides of the football. Claridy offers versatility in the secondary, as he's lined up as an outside cornerback and at safety, giving him the option to play either at the next level. He's a do-it-all guy on both sides, but I'm using the rising senior in this article for his talents at DB. In 2025, he totaled 49 tackles, five interceptions and four pass deflections. Jones is highly athletic and rangy at his safety spot, where he spies the quarterback and cleans up plays that get to him. He has nice ball skills, can cover well, moves well laterally, gets downhill quickly and is a strong tackler.
