Here at Prep Redzone, we seek to cover the entire state of North Carolina, scouting Division III and NAIA prospects the same way we scout Power Four stars. While we primarily operate as a scouting service, we also keep an ear to the ground on the recruiting front.

Whenever we talk about specific colleges, we're typically mentioning offers or potential offers. Here, though, we're leaning into our scouting expertise to break down a talented East Carolina Pirates class as it stands in mid-June.

What are the East Carolina Pirates Getting in their 2027 Commits?

East Carolina is on a tear on the recruiting trail, securing four in-state commitments in the last week. That includes (as we'll see later) the highest-ranked in-state recruit in the last six years. We've followed most of these players for several years. Here's what the Pirates are getting from each of their in-state recruits.

Rogers is the crown jewel of the Pirates' class, and for good reason. The former Virginia Tech commit has the rare combination of untapped potential and consistent high school production. His bend and get-off are fantastic for his size, and the former basketball player has plenty of explosiveness in his 6'6" frame. There's a reason several Power Four schools have courted him. He may have seen a drop in pure pass-rushing production after the shift from Dudley to the deeper Grimsley, but his abilities have not diminished, and he's a Top 25 player in a strong North Carolina high school class.

Hefner first hit our radar before his sophomore year. At that time, we weren't entirely sure which position he'd play. He's a hybrid box safety-outside linebacker who can come down and play the run (75 tackles as a junior) or drop in coverage. The biggest draw is his combination of size and speed, and he has the athleticism and technical ability to play in the slot, where I'd guess he'll start his career. He also has some kick-returning experience and should be able to contribute early on multiple aspects of special teams.

Grier is a more recent evaluation for us, a guy whose name we knew but didn't start tracking as a true college prospect until an outstanding performance at the Carolinas Coaches' Combine. There, he ran a laser-timed 4.44 40, had a 29-inch standing vertical, and a 10-foot-4 broad jump. That athleticism translates to the field, where he's a smaller safety who isn't afraid to hit. He gets downhill in a hurry, and given his athletic profile, the ball production should come in time.

Hyman is a game-wrecking interior defensive lineman who is just growing into the position. He added about 25 pounds last offseason and moved from a power edge rusher to nose tackle as a junior. He's pound-for-pound one of the strongest defenders in the state, and even at 280 pounds in one of the biggest classifications in the state, he was able to bully interior offensive linemen. The intriguing part of his game is that while he's a pure power guy, he has some gap-shooting ability and flashed pass-rushing upside. He's probably a three-technique at the next level, and if he refines his pass-rushing technique, he should see the field earlier than most interior defenders do at the FBS level.

The raw statistics don't tell the whole story of Jack Britt's highly athletic tight end. Barnes caught just six passes last year, most near the line of scrimmage, but averaged nearly 25 yards per reception. He's remarkably shifty in the open field, especially for a taller guy, and he's a willing blocker, signaling he'll likely play in line for the Pirates. He has massive hands (10.75") and an 81-inch wingspan. When he competed at our Prep Redzone Exposure Camp, the two things that surprised me the most were his short-area quickness and full route tree. He showed plenty of downfield playmaking ability, something that he hasn't yet put on film.

This state is big, and it's easy to miss something, especially at this time of year. Want to keep us updated on your recruitment? Tag and/or DM me on Twitter/X (@whelms21) to make sure I know what's going on.

Here at Prep Redzone, we seek to cover the entire state of North Carolina, scouting Division III and NAIA prospects the same way we scout Power Four stars. While we primarily operate as a scouting service, we also keep an ear to the ground on the recruiting front.
