On Saturday, May 16 I was graciously invited back for (at least) the fourth year in a row by Coach Nick Pennisi, as he hosted his annual PSR Big Showcase. As usual, Pennisi's event has become the premier privately ran camp in the state. My reasoning and justification for this is simple: PSR Big Camps offers maximum exposure for prospects by offering staggered, sequential competition opportunities for aspiring athletes in front of the largest crowd of college coaches, Mega Camps withstanding.

Due to an unfortunately scheduling conflict because of a date change, I regrettably missed the vast majority of the quarterback, receiver, and defensive back session. As such, I only have limited notes on those position groups. However, I was present for the duration of the lineman and running back vs. linebacker segment of the event.

Below are my notes from this event, for the position groups referenced in the subject line.

Be sure to follow me on Twitter for the latest New Jersey high school football prospect news and not miss a beat!

It was a mixed bag on the day for John Wychick. Wychick was exceptional when coming down hill, breaking down, and coming to balance. I do not recall him ever losing a rep during cat & mouse drills. However, I have questions surrounding his speed and discipline. In pass drop situations, I thought that rather than getting square and reading the quarterback, he soft of drifted and went where he wanted to.

If he was not the best at his position on the day, Garrett Starry was certainly one of the best linebackers to compete. Starry used his hands to shield and defend inside leverage very well, while using those same hands even better redirecting within 5 yards of scrimmage. What made him so appealing was how well he moved. Starry was able to go backwards and forward with ease, getting to his drops quickly and fluidly. That said, it goes without saying that Starry covers a great deal of ground in a hurry.

When you have a 6'2", 212lb frame, closing space should come easy to you. This was the case for Bordentown's Carter Stumpf. Despite his tendency to lunge just a bit when zeroing in on defenders, Stumpf showed that he closes space extremely well.

A prospect that I got a pretty good look at adorned jersey #88; however, the roster I was provided did not have any biographical data on him. His prospect was able to run, and run far and deep, with just about anyone. I noticed this when matched up during 1v1 against running backs who ran wheels. What also made these reps inspiring was the fact that #88 got his head around to look to play the ball. This is a tribute to his confidence in his ability to run. Additionally, I think he can stand to lower his pad level a bit more when palying.

PSR Big Camp Series Coverage

Quarterback, Receiver, D-Backs Session Pt. 1
PSR Big Camp Series: Defensive Line Session Pt. 1
PSR Big Camp Series: Defensive Line Session Pt. 2
PSR Big Camp Series: Linebacker Session Pt. 1
PSR Big Camp Series: Linebacker Session Pt. 2
PSR Big Camp Series: Offensive Line Session Pt. 1
PSR Big Camp Series: Offensive Line Session Pt. 2
PSR Big Camp Series: Running Back Session Pt. 1
PSR Big Camp Series: Running Back Session Pt. 2
