Friday night lights will be shining brightly before we know it. In preparation for the upcoming campaign, I thought it would be fun identifying five breakout candidates at each position.

Here's the group at the wide receiver position:

[player_tooltip player_id='1663794' first='Kolt' last='Davis'], 2029, Bettendorf

Trained as a quarterback, Davis settled nicely into the receiver position as a freshman last season, when his older brother, [player_tooltip player_id='980028' first='Cannon' last='Davis'], was lining up behind center. Kolt was one of the better young players I saw at the position when watching the Back2Ballin 7v7 tournament this spring, flashing the frame, speed and athleticism likely to lead to nightmares for opposing secondaries in the fall. He's a guy colleges will want to get in on now to beat the rush.

[player_tooltip player_id='1939547' first='Devonta' last='Toe'], 2029, Waukee Northwest

For a team with a roster loaded at wideout, Toe couldn't quite crack the varsity lineup as a freshman last season. He developed in the program and still managed to intrigue programs on the next level, however. Iowa invited him to campus for a game last year, and he visited Iowa State in December. He camped at the in-state Power 4 programs this month. The interest has continued ramping up for a prospect packed with potential that should begin realizing it with on-field production this coming campaign.

[player_tooltip player_id='2079355' first='Kam' last='Chapman'], 2029, Johnston

Chapman strengthened his breakout player candidacy by securing an Iowa State scholarship offer after camping with the Cyclones on June 4. It was for a student-athlete without a varsity catch to his name as a freshman last fall. The numbers should start rolling up for the sophomore-to-be at Johnston in 2026. He's 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, boasting a ton of upside as an athlete with a projectable frame.

[player_tooltip player_id='205630' first='Taylor' last='Carter'], 2028, Cedar Falls

Carter got his feet wet on the Cedar Falls varsity in 2025, catching a pair of balls for 18 yards, while also developing his game within the program. It's a pretty common path for student-athletes coming up through it. Annual success leads to them waiting their turn. Carter is working hard to receive more opportunities as a junior in the fall, camping with Kansas State, Iowa State and Purdue already this month.

[player_tooltip player_id='1324985' first='Roman' last='Nielsen'], 2028, Linn-Mar

I first scouted Nielsen during the Back2Ballin 7v7 tournament in April of 2025. I saw him again last season when Linn-Mar was at Iowa City West. Both times I left the field thinking the same thing about Nielsen - there's a heck of a lot of potential here. At 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, the long-limbed athlete could use his frame and speed as a wideout or tight end on offense. His traits also would work on defense. The Lions should be better having experienced growing pains with a younger roster last year, and Nielsen is a guy ready for a breakout.
