6 more defensive debuts in LA’s latest 2027 rankings to check out

The Rebels' versatile safety shows great instincts and ball skills, which he pairs with listed 4.59-second 40-yard speed for high-impact plays in pass defense with interceptions and deflections, and he is also an explosive tackler who not only effectively wraps up ball-carriers, but unloads for highlight-reel, tone-setting hits. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2228470' first='Trae' last='Dade'] — 6-1, 165 DB — Neville</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Across the Ouachita River, the rival Tigers have added a Division-I defensive back in the talented transfer from Richwood. Dade is a long, fluid cornerback who plays with patience and confidence. While he's not a top-end burner on the track or in the 40-yard dash, he shows good footwork in his back pedal or half-turn shuffle, flips his hips well and effectively uses his hands and the sideline to his advantage to blanket opposing receivers and remain in phase and positioned to make plays. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2228462' first='Derrick' last='Dunbar Jr.'] — 6-2, 205 LB/DB — Covington</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Lions' linebacker, fresh off an all-district first-team junior season, brings a combination of size, explosive and athleticism to the table that has some Division-I college programs envisioning him as a great fit for somewhat of a "star" or other hybrid linebacker/safety role at the next level. He boasted more than 100 tackles, including nine for loss and four sacks, and has continued to work at and get more confident in his coverage skills to be an increasingly well-rounded weapon on defense.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2228461' first='Jairius' last='Jones'] — 6-3, 205 EDGE — Plaquemine</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Jones has been a raw, but highly coachable and hard-working athlete who appeared to see the proverbial light bulb go off late in his junior season when he became a disruptive force for his Green Devils to wrap up the regular season and stand out during another semifinal playoff run. His length and athleticism quickly stand out, but he also plays with good discipline and patience to set the edge before committing to break toward the ball-carriers and passers in the backfield with his verified 4.6-second speed. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2228464' first='Russ' last='Lewis'] — 6-2, 270 DL — Archbishop Rummel</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Raiders' defensive tackle, an anchor up front for their stout unit, is one of the more under-discussed prospects overall who has particularly intrigued several Division-I coaches in the region with his skillset. And now listed another inch or inch and a half taller, he may only be continuing to check additional boxes. Lewis is a stout, powerful athlete who has shown some versatility along the line, gets off the ball well, keeps his legs and hands moving to shed or overpower blockers and make plays behind the line. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2228463' first='Jaden' last='Price'] — 6-2, 155 DB/WR — Marksville</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We've gone back and forth with listed the Tigers' multisport standout primarily as a defensive back or a wide receiver with his four interceptions, seven breakups and 51 catches for 795 yards and nine touchdowns, but more of his recruiting traction of late has appeared to come as the former. In any event, Price is a smooth athlete with quick feet who has excelled on both sides of the ball and on the school's state-championship basketball team this spring. He plays with confidence and aggressiveness, good instincts overall and has continued to work towards perfecting his technique. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
