The Tennessee Class of 2027 is one of the most talent-rich recruiting classes in recent memory, featuring quality prospects at every position, including several who are flying well under the radar. In this new series breaking down Tennessee's top 2027 recruits, I'll spotlight the most overlooked athletes at each position as we enter the most critical stretch of the recruiting calendar.

Next, here are five senior defensive linemen in the Tennessee Class of 2027 who have flashed big potential throughout their careers. Whether it's inconsistency, a limited body of film or questions about size, each player on this list is not receiving the respect they deserve heading into their senior seasons.

Photo: BGA DL [player_tooltip player_id='902956' first='Justice' last='Pittman'] during the state championship. Photo from his Instagram.

DL [player_tooltip player_id='902956' first='Justice' last='Pittman'] – Battle Ground Academy

I've been on record several times saying that I think [player_tooltip player_id='902956' first='Justice' last='Pittman'] is the most underrated player in Tennessee, yet he still doesn't receive the necessary respect. The BGA defensive lineman has been highly productive in high school, including an 11-sack season in 2025. He has plenty of offers, but he's a Power Four player in my eyes and needs more attention heading into his senior year.

He offers good size, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 295 pounds in a large but athletic frame that allows him to dominate all over the defensive front. Pittman projects as an interior player, but is quick enough to jump outside and play defensive end. He has a good first step, strong hands, the ability to shed blocks effectively and good vision that helps him find the ball carrier.

Pittman is good against the run, but he excels at getting after opposing quarterbacks. The rising senior is arguably the best interior pass rusher in Tennessee, regardless of classification. He has an excellent repertoire of moves to work with, along with the nice blend of speed to power. The 2027 prospect needs to polish up in a few areas, but he has the talent to be a key contributor for a high-level collegiate team.

Photo: Oakland DL [player_tooltip player_id='1552175' first='Henry' last='Begley'] during a game. Photo from his Instagram.

DT [player_tooltip player_id='1552175' first='Henry' last='Begley'] – Oakland High School

[player_tooltip player_id='1552175' first='Henry' last='Begley'] is one of the most underrated defensive players in Class 6A, but is due for a huge senior season. He was just a rotational player for Oakland in 2025, totaling 16 tackles, 2.5 for a loss and one sack in seven games. After the graduation of some key defenders, Begley will step in as a starter, where he should dominate the competition.

He offers nice size on the interior defensive front, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 275 pounds in a stout frame that's well-built for his position. Despite being a defensive tackle, Begley is quick off the ball, possesses strong hands and sheds blocks efficiently. The rising senior is an excellent all-around player, but should give Oakland some much-needed pass-rush ability up the middle.

The 2027 prospect had to wait his turn, but he is someone to keep an eye on. He has shown out at preseason scrimmages and high-profile camps this offseason, which should be a warning to all who may doubt him. Begley holds no offers, but has the potential to be a productive player at the collegiate level.

Photo: Southwind DL [player_tooltip player_id='1699523' first='Roosevelt' last='Bates'] during a game.

DT [player_tooltip player_id='1699523' first='Roosevelt' last='Bates'] IV – Southwind High School

Southwind's defensive front was ferocious last season, partially because of [player_tooltip player_id='1699523' first='Roosevelt' last='Bates'] IV, who had a good junior campaign for the Jaguars. In 14 games, he totaled 46 tackles, 16 for a loss, 7.5 sacks and seven quarterback hurries from his defensive tackle spot. He holds 10 offers, including one from Missouri State, but he needs more praise. The rising senior has nice traits and should be a contributing factor at the Division I FBS level.

He's undersized for his position, standing 6-foot and weighing 263 pounds. Despite being a compact player, he is an absolute dog on the defensive line. Bates has a quick first step, is a powerful rusher, has strong football IQ, nice footwork and the ability to take over a game on his own. The lack of size is an issue to some, but not to me. He can flat-out play football, and that's all that matters.

Bates has a relentless motor that allowed him to make several plays last season. He can stop the run effectively, but really impresses with his pass-rush upside as an interior lineman. The 2027 prospect is a good all-around player who needs more college offers. He's due for a monster senior season, which should help get his name out there to others.

Photo: Nolensville DL/EDGE [player_tooltip player_id='1607186' first='Jake' last='Sentell'].

DE [player_tooltip player_id='1607186' first='Jake' last='Sentell'] – Nolensville High School

Nolensville's [player_tooltip player_id='1607186' first='Jake' last='Sentell'] is an intriguing defensive player I came across earlier this year. He had an excellent junior season with the Knights, racking up 58 tackles, 20 being for a loss and seven sacks, while earning TSWA All-State honors. Even with his success, the rising senior is being overlooked, but he is a promising talent who needs more college attention.

He stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 235 pounds as a defensive end, but could play edge rusher. Either way, he's a good player who will make an impact at whatever he plays. The rising senior is very athletic with nice bend, allowing him to make an impact anywhere across the defensive line.

Sentell possesses an elite motor and a great get-off, allowing him to make offensive linemen look silly. The 2027 prospect showcases good technique and nice power, making him a threat to opposing teams. He is outstanding at both rushing the passer and stopping the run. While he holds just one offer, he is a guy who people really need to pay attention to. He's electric and has Division I written all over his game.

Photo: McCallie DE Zach Fortin before a game. Photo from his Instagram.

DE [player_tooltip player_id='892300' first='Zachael' last='Fortin'] – McCallie School

Rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='892300' first='Zachael' last='Fortin'] did not see too much time at McCallie School last season, but he will be the top returning defensive lineman and is due for a big year. 2025 was his first season of high school football in America, but he flashed potential in five games as a rotational player for the Blue Tornado.

He offers solid size, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 245 pounds, in a lean, athletic frame that allows him to move very well with solid bend for an edge rusher/defensive end. Fortin is good against the run, doing a good job of taking up blocks and clogging lanes to leave the back in no man's land. However, his most impressive skill is rushing the passer.

The 2027 prospect is highly athletic, with a great first step that gives him an advantage over most offensive linemen. He has high football IQ and a relentless motor that helps him always find the ball carrier. There are several times on tape where he may not beat the opposition early, but his impressive motor takes over, and teams cannot stop him.
