High school football in Tennessee is loaded with rising talent, and the Class 2A quarterback group is no exception. As spring practice gets underway, several standout signal-callers are emerging as key players to watch for the 2026 season.

In this scouting series breaking down top prospects by position and classification, here's an in-depth look at the top five Class 2A quarterbacks in Tennessee heading into 2026.

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='1668630' first='Dallas' last='Covington'] – East Nashville Magnet School

Photo: East Nashville QB [player_tooltip player_id='1668630' first='Dallas' last='Covington'] before a game.

East Nashville's [player_tooltip player_id='1668630' first='Dallas' last='Covington'] is an intriguing prospect whose ceiling is extremely high thanks to his mobility mixed with nice arm talent. In his first season as the Eagles' starting quarterback, he completed 76% of his passes for 2,110 yards, adding 666 yards on the ground and recorded 29 total touchdowns.

Seeing him perform like that in a competitive 2A classification was encouraging. While he certainly needs to work on his pocket awareness and decision-making at times, Covington has time to develop. He matured significantly throughout the 2025 campaign, showing flashes of being a legitimate FBS contributor.

He can make nearly every throw on the field with his nice arm and accuracy, but I love what he can do with his legs. The rising senior is dynamic with his speed and athleticism, causing trouble for any team he faces.

Photo: East Robertson QB [player_tooltip player_id='1422904' first='Kason' last='Young'] warms up for a game.

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='1422904' first='Kason' last='Young'] – East Robertson High School

[player_tooltip player_id='1422904' first='Kason' last='Young'] is one of the most underrated quarterbacks heading into 2026. He's been a productive player in his career with East Robertson, stepping in as a freshman and immediately being a game-changer. In his three seasons as the starter, Young has racked up 7,454 total yards with 83 touchdowns to just 13 turnovers in 40 career games.

The rising senior is a compact player, standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 180 pounds in an athletic frame that allows him to be mobile. While he isn't the biggest guy on the field, he possesses all of the necessary tools to succeed, along with impressive athleticism for his position. Young is a true dual-threat player who can change the game in the air or on the ground.

I like his arm talent, as he's shown the ability to place balls perfectly to his receivers. He lacks top-end velocity, but the accuracy, touch and timing are all there. The 2027 prospect is a smart football player who processes defenses well and places his throws where his receiver can get them, or no one can.

Young is very athletic with underrated speed and elusiveness that force teams to account for his legs, as he can hurt you with them. He doesn't hold any offers, but he has what it takes to produce at the next level.

Photo: Eagleton QB [player_tooltip player_id='904975' first='Mason' last='Mitchell'] during a game. Photo from his Instagram

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='904975' first='Mason' last='Mitchell'] – Eagleton College & Career Academy

Eagleton's [player_tooltip player_id='904975' first='Mason' last='Mitchell'] is quietly one of the best players in this class after having a standout junior year as a first-time starter in 2025. He threw for 2,736 yards with 29 touchdowns to 13 interceptions and recorded a 102.9 QB Rating in 14 games. Mitchell is a rather intriguing prospect with some nice tools, but minimal experience.

He offers nice size, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 185 pounds in a long frame that allows him to add good weight. The rising senior is raw in certain areas, but you can see that his natural arm talent is there, with impressive arm strength, the ability to layer throws and accuracy. Mitchell's mechanics need work, and there's more development needed on the field, but I like the upside with this talented signal caller.

The 2027 prospect is with a good program that should give him the necessary training, and if he can improve on some things, watch out. As I said, he's definitely a raw prospect. But at the same time, you can spot the pure talent from a mile away.

Photo: Mt. Pleasant QB [player_tooltip player_id='2071462' first='Kale' last='Scott'] during a game. Photo from his Instagram.

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2071462' first='Kale' last='Scott'] – Mt. Pleasant High School

[player_tooltip player_id='2071462' first='Kale' last='Scott'] took over as the starting quarterback at Mt. Pleasant High School this past season and turned in a standout campaign. He was highly efficient, completing 73% of his passes and recording a 142.5 QB Rating, while throwing for 2,076 yards with 26 total touchdowns. He is a pure pocket passer with some nice tools and proven production, which lands him on this list.

He's a compact player, but he produces even without the prototypical size of a top-tier quarterback. His arm talent is intriguing, as he's raw in that area. However, Scott has solid arm strength, nice accuracy, the ability to make plays off-balance and is not afraid to throw the ball over the middle of the field.

The rising senior needs to improve his mechanics and processing, but that will come with more experience and offseason training. If he can develop in certain areas while growing in the weight room, Scott has the potential to be a solid contributor at the next level.

Photo: Huntingdon QB [player_tooltip player_id='932932' first='Kenton' last='Smith'] before a game.

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='932932' first='Kenton' last='Smith'] – Huntingdon High School

[player_tooltip player_id='932932' first='Kenton' last='Smith'] is the starting quarterback for the Huntingdon Mustangs, where he was productive last season. In 15 games, the rising senior completed 69% of his passes for 595 yards, running for another 801 and recording 27 total touchdowns. He's an intriguing player who's more of an athlete, but is stuck at the quarterback position due to his dual-threat ability in a run-heavy offense.

He does offer solid size, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 180 pounds in a lean, athletic frame that allows him to stay mobile. Smith is essentially a running back/wide receiver playing back there, so he's extremely fluid with great running skills that help his offense succeed.

As a passer, his arm talent is solid. It's nothing crazy, but he's proven to be accurate and make good decisions in the rare case that Huntingdon does throw it. The 2027 prospect is likely a better college prospect at another position, but his impressive athleticism, elusiveness and speed allow him to dominate competition.

High school football in Tennessee is loaded with rising talent, and the Class 2A quarterback group is no exception. As spring practice gets underway, several standout signal-callers are emerging as key players to watch for the 2026 season.
