One of my guiltiest pleasures when ranking prospects for Prep Redzone New Jersey is picking-and-choosing to highlight prospects that I thought had outstanding film. As part of our class of 2027 player rankings update, I get to highlight those prospects who put on a show with their highlight reels. Below are a handful of prospects who have film that left an impression on me.

Kanning Might Be the Best "Big" ATH in the Class

Northern Highlands is no stranger to success and top athletes, but having a prospect as dynamic as [player_tooltip player_id='1894106' first='Tucker' last='Kanning'] is rare - even for the Highlanders. For as tall as he is, Kanning runs very low when possessing the ball. Canning also does a great job accelerating in the open field when there is acreage ahead of him. On defense we find Kanning playing centerfield safety, backpedalling low as he reads his keys, only to break and explode with a full body shot to break up passes as the ball arrives. Not lost upon him is the ability to play in run support. We see Kanning roll down and press the point man in bunch formations, disrupting things enough to make tackles after shedding those blocks. Kanning is quick enough to also make plays from the inside-out. With long legs and soft hands, he can gain ground quickly and is a reliable target. Although it appears he is striding, he moves much faster than I think a strider typically does.

The Blue Devils are set to Follow the Play of Brown

Ridge is not necessarily known for having the most athletic prospects, but they are certainly known for producing well coached, disciplined ones. [player_tooltip player_id='1575731' first='Greg' last='Brown'] might be the best of both worlds for their class of 2027. A linebacker, Brown does an outstanding job of playing his run fit and maintaining his run fit leverage. Offensively Brown is a tight end that delivers a great pop and keeps attacking, coming after you. We actually see him pull to trap opponents, finishing his blocks in the process. For a prospect of his size, Brown is surprisingly athletic and has the potential to impact the game in any number of ways.

Receivers like Spoonire Make Regression due to Turnover at Rumson-Fair Haven Non-Existent

For as long as I have been covering football in the state of New Jersey, Rumson-Fair Haven has always been led by a potent passing attack; and despite turnover at the receiver position, targets like [player_tooltip player_id='1939708' first='Cole' last='Spoonire'] are testament and living proof to what the Bulldogs do. A slot receiver, Spoonire sinks his hips well when running out routes, maximizing separation and tightness to his break. We see him adjust to poorly thrown balls in just about any direction, while running behind his pads after catching the ball. Spoonire has balance when running, which enables him to gain extra yardage, while showing balance as he spins against defender's leverage when tackling to pick up additional yards - also breaking poor tackles with ease. As a route runner he sells hard, shoulder fakes to create separation and is aware of where he is on the field, making falling catches and sideline grabs with equal proficiency. Spoonire profiles as a very reliable underneath target. He uses his hands well to catch the ball and frequently adjusts to throws that were not all that great. It is clear that Spoonire has carved out a niche for himself and thrives in it.

From DJ Khalid to [player_tooltip player_id='1524399' first='JD' last='Teza']: Another One... at The Hun

Although The Hun School has been a quarterback factory the last decade or so, those quarterbacks would not have achieved all the success that they have had without their receivers, and [player_tooltip player_id='1524399' first='JD' last='Teza'] is another good one. Teza, at 6'4", has the ball skills that translate to the ability to high point it and use his hands. When the ball is in his possession, we see him run behind his pads, while also being a threat to gain a step on defenders after he makes his cut. When going vertically, Teza does an outstanding job of tracking the ball over his shoulder and into his bread basket. Teza also has shown to toe tap the sideline. However, the toe tab-ability forms a lethal pairing when cosigned with his propensity to play the back-shoulder reception. Simply put: Teza is elite in every facet of being the targeted by the back shoulder thrown.
