Defense set the tone in a big way at this weekend's Garden State Gridiron, and the 15u defensive backs were right at the center of it. With limited space and constant passing attacks in a 7v7 format, the secondary was tested on nearly every snap, and this group answered with tight coverage, strong instincts, and timely plays on the ball.

From corners who erased their matchup to safeties who read quarterbacks and jumped routes, the play on the back end stood out throughout the day. While this list is centered around defensive backs, one linebacker forced his way into the conversation with a performance that simply couldn't be ignored.

[player_tooltip player_id='1451510' first='Tyler' last='Zysk'] stood out as a true anchor in the middle of the defense. With his size and physical presence, he naturally took up a ton of space and made life difficult on anything working across the field, especially crossing routes that never seemed to find clean windows. That combination of size, awareness, and leadership gives him the ability to control the middle and set the tone for the entire defense.

A free floating safety, Ty was the commanding force in the center field of the secondary. A DB that can open up his hips and get to the sideline quickly, Ty showed a wide range in his coverage ability. What stood out to me the most though is how quickly Ty would fly back up field. He would see the receiver coming across the middle and cut off their route to blow up the pass.

[player_tooltip player_id='1543877' first='Jahili' last='Thompson'] is a cornerback that is best to get familiar with. He flourished in pressing at the line in particular, jamming the receiver back and getting them off rhythm to completely take them out of the play. Even if a receiver did escape the line, Jahili was able to press and run with them, staying tight to the hip as they navigated through their routes.

"Slimy" had the build of an elite receiver, but really shined from the cornerback position. A taller corner, Slimy makes it tough for any receiver to out compete him for the ball. My biggest takeaway from Slimes performance this weekend was his turn and run speed. Receivers had very little separation from him when they went vertical, showing that Slimy can get out of his back peddle and accelerate quickly.

Najil Tearney is one of the smoothest cornerbacks in the 15u tournament. Transitioning out of his back peddle, Tearney showed fluid hip movement and a low pad level in his change of directions, which is exactly what you hope to get out of your CB1. Receivers found very little success when going up against Tearney at the Garden State Gridiron.
