The Class of 2028 is shaping up to be a great one here in Nebraska, with a few players already earning their first offers and several more establishing themselves as stars. Below are a few players that I think are set to take off this fall!

Gross Catholic's [player_tooltip player_id='2129145' first='Gage' last='Mettscher'] was a nice find this season as he seems to have the tools to develop into a top-tier prospect. Mettscher asserted himself as a stonewall right tackle with next-level measurables at 6'5" and 275 pounds and room to continue filling out his frame. Gage uses his length to his advantage, as he can fully extend when making initial contact and be the main aggressor at the point of attack. Even at 6'5", Gage manages to stay in a balanced base with good pad level. He flashed great lateral quickness and footwork when dropping into pass protection. As a run blocker, Mettscher can be a real mauler as he explodes out of his stance and has a powerful leg drive when forcing defenders out of running lanes. He can climb up to the second level to seal off LBs with ease and will continue looking for more work. I think another season of good tape will put Gage on the map!

Gretna's [player_tooltip player_id='1573579' first='Cayson' last='Schlotfeld'] followed up a breakout freshman season with another stellar campaign in year two. Schlotfeld played on both sides of the field and was productive in each role with 82 carries, 480 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns, 130 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, a sack, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles. Cayson has upside to play either RB or LB, but has really stood out with his LB play, where he is one of the top defensive "heat-seekers" in the state. One of Cayson's biggest strengths is his ability to read and diagnose plays, allowing him to explode through his gaps and quickly close on the ball when he keys in on the run. Once he gets to the ball, Cayson is a lock to secure the stop using proper tackling form and good drive to knock his opponent back. Great lateral mobility helps him flow along the LOS and when in coverage. Cayson's powerful, compact frame allows him to blow up blockers when charging and can use his hands to disengage. Schlofeld's communication also stands out as he's quick to call things out during pre-snap. The tape matches the production for Cayson... get after this guy asap!!

Platteview's [player_tooltip player_id='1649538' first='Quinn' last='Smith'] is the presumed next man up at QB1 for the Trojans and has all the tools to succeed. Quinn played a limited role as a sophomore, serving as the backup, and only attempted 15 passes and scored a rushing touchdown. However, after watching Quinn at some of our showcases and his JV film, the Trojans look to be in good hands. Quinn stands out with his mobility and quickness, which help him evade pass rushers and make him effective as a running QB. He possesses a live arm that can deliver darts over the middle of the field and can unload when needed to go deep. In clips from this 7v7 season, it looks like Quinn has continued to fine-tune his mechanics and decision-making skills. Look for a big step forward in a new role for Quinn this fall!

North Star's [player_tooltip player_id='2129205' first='Owen' last='Wiltshire'] is a player to keep an eye out for after giving us several flashes as a sophomore, and should benefit from graduation taking a toll on the Gators' receiving core. Last season, Wiltshire hauled in 12 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns with an additional 21 tackles on defense. Owen's bigger frame at 6'2" and 175 pounds allows him to make tough catches over the middle of the field while also having the burst to tack on additional yardage after the catch. He does a good job of working his way back to the ball when going for the catch and can make good "hands" receptions away from his frame. Owen also impressed with his willingness to be physical on blocks out on the perimeter. Rising player to keep on your watchlist!

Lincoln Southeast's [player_tooltip player_id='1246601' first='Tate' last='Harris'] is an intriguing up-and-comer who looks like he could break into a big role this fall. Tate played a very limited role as a sophomore, only appearing in two varsity games, but showed out for the Knights' JV team. Tate has the size that sticks out on a roster sheet, standing at 6'5" and 215 pounds, with the length that will entice coaches. Tate is listed as a TE/DL with upside to play either position at the next level. Harris's size makes him an instant mismatch no matter where he lines up, while his strong hands make contested catches. Defensively, Tate does a great job exploding off the ball and keeping his hands active to win his 1v1s. High ceiling player who will have a chance to blow up this fall!
