Defensive Line Notebook

One of two top performers on that morning was defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1396266' first='Anthony' last='Santiago']. At 6'2" 236lbs, Santiago already looks like a 'tweener in terms of whether he will play interior line or off the edge; furthermore, Santiago showed the skillset to succeed at any technique along the defensive line. One rep I caught, he executed a long-arm power rush where he proceeded to complete de-cleat and dump this matchup on their posterior. Later on when he was aligned off the edge, he won easily with speed. Just eying him up, I suspected that Santiago would tend to win exclusively with power - but I was glad he rebuffed my initial suspicion. Lastly, what made Santiago so devastating was that he has an absolutely great get off... On the other end of the size spectrum, despite being just 5'6" [player_tooltip player_id='1640039' first='Isaiah' last='Shuler'] played as if he was 6'5" at times. Shuler was clearly outsized for much of the morning; however, he managed to win his matchups due to staying low and maintaining superior leverage.

If there was a defensive line prospect who I would have considered a tactician, I would have to say it was [player_tooltip player_id='1165215' first='Philip' last='Zuena Jr.'] At first, I thought that Zuena was getting home with in and spins. Upon further review, however, I realized that he was actually hitting masterful a chop-spin combo. As Zuena chopped down hard and violently on his opponents arms with his outside arm, he quickly spun, delivering an elbow spike into the middle of his matchup's back. Later on I thought that Zuena's motor died down a bit, as he tried to hit hesitation rush moves - something that I suspect he was toying around with. Lastly, Zuena has enough strength to pry open a lineman's inside shoulder. Needless to say, he was named a top preforming defensive lineman... Like Zuena before him, [player_tooltip player_id='1475448' first='Peterson' last='Etienne'] was also named a top performer. Clearly an interior lineman, Peterson was listed at 6'1" 270lbs. As he ages, I truly hope that he increases his flexibility and bendability. For as strong, though, and dominant as he was in the trenches - most notably deploying a bull rush - his stance and base was poor. Cleaning this up some will add explosiveness to his raw strength, positioning himself to be a future War Daddy in the trenches.
